THE CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION-A PARISH OF THE DIOCESE OF GREENSBURG PAGE 2

From Father George’s Desk…. I was saddened to learn of the passing of my former neighbor, Father Chester Raimer, earlier this month. He had been in declining health since before his retirement in 2013, especially over the last year or so. I’m sure many of you remember Father Chet for his presence at our regional penance services and other regional activities over the years. He was ordained by Bishop Connare in 1974 and served at a number of parishes in the diocese in his 39 years of active ministry, including 23 years at Ss. Simon & Jude Parish in Blairsville (as parochial vicar for two years in the early ‘80s, then for 21 years as pastor from 1992-2013). He was my neighbor for the six years that I served as pastor at Church of the Good Shepherd, where I got to enjoy his good sense of humor and learn from his love of liturgy. From our many regional pastoral council meetings together, I loved and respected his drive and determination to keep discussions on point and meetings on track...something I strive, with varying degrees of success, to implement in my ministry! Please pray for the repose of his priestly soul!

Father Chet’s passing is a reminder to us about the work we all have to do regarding prayer and support for vocations to ensure the spiritual health of our diocese for future generations. In our society today there is so much noise and so many distractions that it is incredibly difficult for our young people to hear the Lord’s call, let alone persevere in their commitment. Please keep in your

prayers those who are currently in formation—religious novices, candidates and aspirants to the perma-nent diaconate, and seminarians. God continues to call men and women—even some in our own par-ish—to priestly, diaconal, and religious vocations; yes, they need our prayers but they also need our support and encouragement.. Pease continue to pray for and encourage those who you believe may be called to a vocation to the priesthood, permanent diaconate, or consecrated life. Finally, if you think you may be one of those God is calling, don’t be afraid to talk to someone. I know Father Greg, Father Rudy, or Deacon Steve would be more than happy to answer your questions. I, too, am always availa-ble by phone, email, or in person, or contact Father Tyler Bandura, Director of the Diocesan Office of Clergy Vocations at 724-837-0901.

This week the Church celebrates the feasts of an apostle (St. James the Greater), a 14th century Swedish wife and mother who became the healer of an historic rift in the Church (St. Bridget), and a 19th century Lebanese priest who had pilgrims traveling from everywhere to seek his profound spiritual counsel (St. Sharbel Makhluf). But the best-known and loved in terms of popular devotion and piety are, undoubtedly, Saints Joa-chim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom we honor on Thursday. While we have no real historically verifiable information about Joachim or Anne, except to know that they existed, the information we do have comes from pious legend and from an

unreliable source, the apocryphal Gospel of James, which dates from the second century. Mary’s par-ents (even the names Joachim and Anne are known only through the Gospel of James) are typically presented as an old and barren couple, who long to bring a child into the world. An angel (God’s mes-senger) delivers the news that, not only are they to have a child, but one who will be revered for all time. But the holiness and heroism of this couple can be inferred from the whole family atmosphere around Mary in the Scriptures. The bottom line is whether we rely on the pious legends or extrapolate from in-formation we can glean from the pages of the Bible, we see in Mary the fulfillment of many generations of faithful and prayerful people. Joachim and Anne—whether these are their real names or not—represent that entire quiet series of generations who faithfully perform their duties, practice their faith, and establish an atmosphere for the coming of the Messiah, but remain obscure [americancatholic.org]. The Parish Festival is only three weeks away and the planning is continuing. Please see the rest of today’s bulletin for much more on the festival. We need lots of volunteers to help in any number of ways to make this vitally important parish fundraiser a success!

WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS

We congratulate the following couples who were united in the Sacrament of Mar-riage at the Church of the Resurrection

during the month of June:

Jason Miloser & Rebecca Smith on June 2nd in Clymer

Justin Cameron & Cassandra Fugate on June 16th in Rossiter

Jordon Long & Alexis Cornman on June 23rd in Ernest

We pray that the Lord will bless them with the courage and the strength it takes to remain in His love, and that, in love, they will find happiness grow deeper each day.

Movie Night! July 26-6:30PM We’ll be having another movie night on Thurs. July 26 at 6:30 pm at the Parish Center in Clymer. This month our mov-

ie will be: “Paul, Apostle of Christ”. (Rated PG-13) One of the main characters in the movie, Luke, is being played by Jim Caviezel who played Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ”. Paul goes from the most infamous persecu-tor of Christians to Christ’s most influential apostle. Luke’s writings details the begin-nings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. Their faith challenged an empire. But their words changed the world! Come and join us! Snacks will be pro-vided! Everyone Welcome!

IN THE 2005 JASON WRIGHT BOOK CHRISTMAS JARS, characters fill empty jars with spare change and during the Ad-vent season secretly give a coin-filled jar to someone in need. In our efforts to have Christmas jars available to many in-need

families, small “jars” are available at each worship site. Please pray for the success of this outreach ministry, fill one and return it before Advent begins on December 2.

BISHOP MALESIC INVITES ALL COUPLES CELE-BRATING THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY DURING THE CALENDAR YEAR 2018 to participate in a special Golden Jubilee Mass to be held at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 3:00 PM. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends should contact their local parish office (724-254-3041) to reg-ister couples for this celebration. Even though they may not be able to attend the Mass, they will receive a scroll signed by the Bishop commemorating their anniversary.
