Joy to the World…

Merry Christmas everyone!

OK, I know it’s not quite Christmas yet, but it will be before you read my next bulle n column, so I thought I’d express my Christmas wish for you now. Plus, the readings for this Sunday point to Christmas. In the First Reading, Isaiah announces that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. In the Second Reading, we hear about the Incarna on—the Eternal Son of God coming to earth and taking on a human body. In the Gospel, Saint Elizabeth proclaims that Jesus—s ll in his mother’s womb—is Lord.

Since Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, it makes sense to ask what presents we can give him. There are many good answers. For example, we can give Jesus our life, heart, mind, soul, will, voca on, challenges, family and other rela ves, friends, ques ons, challenges, me, possessions, triumphs, failures and so on.

One thing I would like to suggest that we give to Jesus is a song. What do I mean by that? I mean memorizing a new song of praise or thanksgiving to God (or about God) that we can sing in our heart—or out loud, if we prefer—when we are not otherwise occupied. For example, we can sing it when we are si ng in some quiet place, driving, taking a shower, lying in bed, going for a walk, doing dishes, or just about anything else in which our mind is not otherwise taken up with other things. If our memory isn’t good enough to memorize a new song, at least we can find one that we haven’t sung before—in a book or on the internet—and sing that to the Lord.

When I met Jesus Christ and became a Chris an thirty-nine years ago, the first church I was invited into and was involved in for a while—which was a Protestant charisma c church—had a number of praise songs at their worship services that consisted mostly of a few lines sung over and over again. There were several advantages to this kind of song. For one thing, it was directed at God, which introduced me into the wonderful habit of singing to God and not just about him. These songs were also easy to memorize, both because of their brevity and their simple melodies. To this day I s ll o en sing some of them frequently. I do so in my heart; other people don’t hear me, but I know God does.

Over the years, I have added other songs to my repertoire.

Why should we sing these songs? Well, throughout Sacred Scripture, we are encouraged to. For example, the Psalmist exhorts us to sing a number of mes: “O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salva on!” Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! (Psalm 95:1-2) “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salva on from day to day.” (Psalm 96:1-2) “O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! (Psalm 98:1) “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the lands. Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:1-2)

Got it?

Saint Paul encourages the Chris ans in Ephesus to sing as part of making the best use of the me God has given us. He writes: “Look carefully how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of the me, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk on wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.” (Ephesians 5:15-19) Singing to the Lord can help us experience the “sober intoxica on of the Spirit, “an exhilara on that does not depend on chemicals, and that is far greater.

There are many reasons to sing to the Lord. God, in Sacred Scripture, tells us to sing. Singing helps us enter more deeply into prayer and into an awareness of God’s goodness, love and presence. Singing can move our thoughts away from nega vity, our wills away from tempta ons and our emo ons away from gloom. And if we sing out loud, we build each other up in the faith.

One song I learned many years ago was the Christmas song “Joy to the world.” Jesus wants us to have joy. That’s one reason he came to earth and was born a li le baby at Bethlehem. As Jesus said to his apostles: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11) This Christmas, let’s give Jesus the present of showing him we have received the joy he came to give us. Let’s sing him a new song.

Merry Christmas! Father Rudolph

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Edward was born in London and brought up in the Anglican Church. As a young man he travelled to Turkey, where a wealthy ci zen of that country offered him his daughter in marriage provided that Edward embrace the Islamic faith. He rejected the offer. He returned home via Rome, where he converted to Catholicism. He went on to study for the priesthood at Reims, France and was ordained there in 1592. He was sent to England the following year. At the me it was illegal to exercise ministry as a Catholic priest and within a few months of his arrival he was arrested, sentenced to death and sent to prison. He escaped but was soon recaptured. The horses that were supposed to drag him to the place of execu on refused to move, so he walked to his place of martyrdom. Blessed Edward Waterson, pray for us! "We envy the shepherds who went to visit the gro o of Bethlehem to see Him, kissed His li le hand, and offered Him their gi s. "Lucky shepherds!" we exclaim. And yet there is no reason to envy them, for their fortune is ours, too. The same Jesus they visited in the gro o is in our tabernacle.
