SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Dear Parishioners, ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE … We are still looking for volunteers to assist in planning the for our 175th Anniversary. If interested, please reach out to Fr. Cruz. ADVENT..… As we begin the Fourth Week of Advent, we should call to mind today’s Gospel. The child in Elizabeth’s womb, soon to be known as John the Baptist, leaps for joy in the presence of Mary, who is carrying Jesus in her womb. We too should be joyful, leaping for joy, as we prepare for the coming of Our Lord, as we prepare for His Second Coming. Every day we are one day closer to His Second Coming, whenever it may be. Let us joyfully prepare for that day, by allowing ourselves to be set free from the sins that enslave us, turning to the Lord in His love and mercy, and sharing that joy filled love with everyone we encounter. THANK YOU … to all those who participated in making the Parish Lessons and Carols last Thursday night a success. Our combined choir was magnificent. We hope many of you were able to attend, and if you did not, please remember to join us next year. WHAT A SHOW… not to be outdone were our Elementary School children who performed last Tuesday and Wednesday. Even Ebenezer Scrooge would have felt the joy of the Christmas Season if he heard our kids. Congratulations on a job well done. HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION … We are happy to announce the introduction of evening Masses for our Holy Days of Obligation when they occur on a non-holiday weekday. Keep an eye on the bulletin as we add opportunities for you to return from work, and attend a 7PM Mass on those evenings; either as a Mass in Anticipation, or as a Mass of the day; offered in either in English or Spanish. We know it can be a bit confusing at times, especially when the day occurs on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, but we will do our best to remind you ahead of time when the Masses will occur so you may faithfully fulfill your obligation. COMMUNION UNDER BOTH SPECIES… As the cold weather sets in, so does flu season. Beginning next week, we will offer communion under single specie, the Body of Christ, at all the Masses. Not to fear though, as we are taught by the Church, we receive Jesus fully, “Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity,” when we consume either His Sacred Body or Precious Blood. ADVENT RECONCILIATION MONDAY … December 19, from 3pm to 8pm, in the Lower Church. Please take the opportunity to receive the Lord’s forgiveness before the Christmas Season. All of us at times stray from the path Jesus wishes us to walk, let’s get back on the right path so as to walk humbly with our God. FAMILY FAITH FORMATION … The Elementary School continues with its Family Faith Formation program. If your children are in our elementary school be sure to remember to attend. It is a wonderful way to keep one step ahead of our kids when they have questions regarding our faith, and also a great refresher for things we may have forgotten. FORMED … Every parish family can now have unlimited access to life-changing Catholic content thanks to a great program titled “Formed.” Access to the truth, beauty and meaning of the Catholic Faith anytime, anywhere by using your computer, tablet or smartphone. Grab a flyer in the rear of the Church with more information, and the necessary passcode FFKND3 to continue your journey in the faith with Formed. OUR YOUTH GROUP … the St. Raymond’s Youth Group will meet every Sunday from 1 pm to 3 pm, in the lower church. If you are of

high school age, you are welcome to come and spend some time with others your age, while discovering more about the God who loves us, as well as learning to love others and yourself. BAPTISMS ... in order to become a member of the Catholic Church, a person needs to be baptized (usually as a child) ... two godparents are needed and the godparents are models of the Catholic faith (and so, they need to be baptized, have received Communion and Confirmation, and, if married, married in the Catholic Church. They need to be members of a parish as well) ... parents with infant children should come to the rectory and speak with one of the priests about papers that are needed, class to be taken and dates for the Baptism ... Baptism gives us the life of Christ --- a special and important gift to be used wisely and well. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests (especially Father Brogan) about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ... just a few words about the procedure ... when a person dies, it is customary for the family to have a wake, a viewing of one or two days in a funeral home … then the body is brought to church by the family and friends for Mass ... sometimes the body is cremated and then buried ... usually the body is brought directly to the cemetery for burial … all families should prepare for death, the funeral, the cemetery plot … the priests can help you but you should contact the funeral home for pre-preparations and visit the cemetery to see the different grave plots and areas that are available to you as well as the niches for burial of the cremains ... a funeral can be expensive and so a family should do some preparations beforehand … CREMAINS (ASHES) are treated like a body and are always to be buried NOT KEPT AT HOME, SPRINKLED IN THE OCEAN OR DIVIDED AMONG FAMILY MEMBERS ... CREMAINS ARE TO BE TREATED LIKE A BODY WITH RESPECT AND WITH BURIAL. LAST CHANCE SUNDAY MASS … Please remember that we have a 4:30 pm Mass during the School Year. If you cannot make it earlier on Sunday, come and fulfill your obligation later in the day. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start --- it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED … We are still in need of people to help in the celebration of the Epiphany (Three King's Day) on January 8th. Queridos Feligreses, COMITÉ DE ANIVERSARIO ... Todavía estamos buscando voluntarios para ayudar en la planificación de nuestro 175 aniversario. Si está interesado, por favor, contactar al Padre Cruz. ADVIENTO ... Al comenzar la cuarta semana de Adviento, debemos traer a la memoria el Evangelio de hoy. El niño en el vientre de Isabel, que pronto será conocido como Juan el Bautista, salta de alegría en presencia de María, que está llevando a Jesús en su vientre. Nosotros también debemos estar alegres, saltando de alegría, mientras nos preparamos para la venida de Nuestro Señor, mientras nos preparamos para su segunda venida. Cada día estamos un día más cerca de su segunda venida, cuando quiera que ésta sea. Vamos a prepararnos con alegría para ese día, al permitirnos ser liberados de los pecados que nos esclavizan, dirigiendonos al Señor en su amor y misericordia, compartiendo esa alegría llena de amor con todas las personas que nos encontramos. GRACIAS ... a todos los que participaron en hacer las Lecciones y Villancicos de la Parroquia el pasado jueves por la noche un éxito. Nuestro coro combinado fue magnífico. Esperamos que muchos de ustedes pudieran asistir, y si no lo hizo, por favor recuerde a unirse a nosotros el próximo año. QUÉ ESPECTÁCULO ... para no ser menos eran nuestros niños de la Escuela Primaria que realizaron el pasado martes y el miércoles. Incluso Ebenezer Scrooge habría sentido la alegría de la temporada de Navidad si hubiera escuchado a nuestros hijos. Felicitaciones en un trabajo bien hecho. FIESTAS DE GUARDAR ... Estamos felices de anunciar la introducción de misas por la noche para Nuestros Días de Obligación cuando son en un día laborable no festivo. Mantenga un ojo en el boletín a medida que añadimos oportunidades para que usted regrese del trabajo, y pueda asistir a la misa en la noche a las 7PM; ya sea como una misa de anticipación, o como una misa del día; ofrecida ya sea en Inglés o Español. Sabemos que puede ser un poco confuso a veces, sobre todo cuando el día occure un sábado, domingo o lunes, pero vamos a hacer todo lo posible para recordarle con tiempo cuando las misas serán para que puedan cumplir fielmente su obligación. LA COMUNIÓN BAJO LAS DOS ESPECIES ... como el frío se establece, también lo hace la temporada de la gripe. A partir de la próxima semana, vamos a ofrecer la comunión bajo una sola especie, el Cuerpo de Cristo, en todas las misas. No hay que temer, como nos enseña la Iglesia, recibimos a Jesús totalmente, "Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad," cuando consumimos ya sea su Cuerpo Sagrado o la Preciosa Sangre. LUNES DE RECONCILIACIÓN DE ADVIENTO ... El 19 de diciembre de 3pm a 8pm, en la Iglesia de Abajo. Por favor tomar la oportunidad de recibir el perdón del Señor antes del tiempo de Navidad. Todos nosotros a veces nos desviamos de la ruta que Jesús desea que caminemos, vamos a volver al camino correcto con el fin de caminar humildemente con nuestro Dios. FORMACIÓN DE FE DE FAMILIA ... La Escuela Primaria continúa con su programa de formación de fe de familia. Si sus hijos están en la escuela primaria asegúrese de recordarse a asistir. Es una maravillosa manera de mantenerse un paso por delante de nuestros hijos cuando ellos tienen preguntas con respecto a nuestra fe, y también un gran repaso para las cosas que hemos podido olvidar. FORMADO ... Cada familia parroquial ahora puede tener acceso ilimitado a contenido católico que cambia vida gracias a un gran programa titulado "Formado." BAUTIZOS ... con el fin de convertirse en un miembro de la Iglesia Católica, una persona tiene que ser bautizado (por lo general como un niño)-se necesitan dos padrinos y los padrinos son los modelos de la fe católica (y por lo tanto, necesitan ser bautizado, han recibido la Comunión y la Confirmación, y, si es casado, casado en la Iglesia Católica. ARREGLOS PARA UN FUNERAL ... sólo unas pocas palabras acerca del procedimiento ... cuando una persona muere, es habitual que la familia tenga un velorio, vigilia de uno o dos días en una funeraria ... entonces el cuerpo es llevado a la iglesia por la familia y amigos para la misa ... a veces el cuerpo es cremado y luego enterrado ... por lo general el cuerpo se traslada directamente al cementerio para el entierro ... todas las familias deben prepararse para la muerte, el entierro, el terreno en el cementerio ... los sacerdotes pueden ayudarle pero usted debe ponerse en contacto con la funeraria para hacer estos arreglos pre-preparados y visitar el cementerio para ver las distintas tumbas y áreas que están disponibles para usted, así como los nichos para el entierro de las cenizas ... un funeral puede ser costoso y por eso una familia debe hacer algunas preparaciones de antemano ... LOS RESTOS (CENIZAS) son tratados como un cuerpo y siempre deben ser enterrados NO SE DEBEN QUEDAR EN LA CASA, ROCIAR EN EL OCÉANO O DIVIDIR ENTRE MIEMBROS DE LA FAMILIA ... LAS CENIZAS SON TRATADAS COMO UN CUERPO CON RESPETO Y CON UN ENTIERRO. ÚLTIMA OPORTUNIDAD PARA IR A LA MISA DEL DOMINGO ... Por favor recuerde que tenemos una misa a las 4:30 pm durante el año escolar. Si no puede venir a las misas temprano el domingo, venir y cumplir con su obligación al final del día. ¿TARDE A LA IGLESIA? ... ¿Por qué? Por favor, arreglar llegar temprano a la misa, para orar, leer la Santa Escritura y estar listo cuando empezamos --- hará la misa más devota y significativa para todos. … Recuerde, si usted no oye las lecturas, usted no oye las enseñanzas de Cristo. LLAMADOS POR DIOS Al acercarse la Navidad, las Escrituras del Adviento nos llevan a un mundo de sueños, señales, maravillas y el milagro del nacimiento de una virgen. Muchas veces dejamos que los grandes relatos de nuestra fe, los que son más conocidos, simplemente nos pasen sin sentirlos. El relato del Evangelio de hoy sobre los acontecimientos previos al nacimiento del Señor parece una telenovela actual. Sin embargo, la valentía de José, aun en medio de una época que debe haber sido increíblemente confusa, nos brinda un modelo a seguir. Cada semana, Dios nos llama a aceptar el camino de la bondad y la verdad por medio de la proclamación de la Palabra sagrada de Dios. Como José, somos llamados a hacer lo que el Señor nos ordena. Mientras estamos en el umbral de la Navidad, tengamos la valentía para estar abiertos a lo que sea, a lo que el Señor requiera de nosotros durante nuestra celebración del milagro de Belén.
