The Nature of

Grace, Evil, Sin,

Mercy and Grace Continued -

Eve sins. She turns away from the Creator and listens to

the creature. She doubts God and trusts the serpent. She chooses

her will before the will of God. It seems “good” to her: why can’t

she decide for herself what is good and evil? If she likes it and it

makes her happy then she can call it good (even if God has called

it evil), and if she does not like it, if it does not make her happy,

then she can call it evil and not do it again. She is free (or at least

so she might think). However, this is the lie of temptation. It pre-

sents evil as a good. It suggest we are free, and we cannot be free

if we are subject to God. We should be free to decide for our-

selves what is good and evil. Again, the lie of temptation: this is

not freedom but enslavement. We must remember God created us

free. His goodness never enslaves us because we are always free

to reject it, but this is not the essences of freedom. Freedom means

being free to pursue our greatest good and greatest happiness,

which is eternal happiness with God. God does not force us to

pursue this happiness. Evil, vice, sin on the other hand binds us

and enslaves us. It inhibits us from pursuing this happiness. Just

think for a moment: every virtuous and good deed is easy to walk

away from, but evil and vice are hard to give up. This is because

the power to do good and avoid evil comes from God’s grace. The

power to do evil is inherent in the freedom of our will. While be-

fore the fall Adam and Eve had every virtue and the power to do

extraordinary good because they were filled with God’s grace ha-

bitually in them, sanctifying them. That same grace always left

them free to say “no” to God’s grace. However, after the fall,

when that grace was lost, the power to do good and resist evil is

greatly diminished. That grace no longer lives in them. All they

will have after the fall is actual grace which is momentary, and if

not acted upon, it is lost. This grace does not dwell in them or

sanctify them.

Eve sins and what happens? Nothing! This is important

because it reveals an important truth on how God’s grace flows to

the world, not just in the time of Adam and Eve, but to this day. It

must be remembered that the story of Adam and Eve is laying the

foundations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Both Adam and Eve

prefigure Jesus and the Church. Thus it is only in light of the Gos-

pel that we can better appreciate the meaning of Genesis. (Eve also

prefigures Mary; I will explain in a moment)

While Adam and Eve are “King and Queen” of creation,

having dominion over it, they are also priests in that God’s grace

will flow through them to all of creation. All Grace flows to crea-

tion from Adam and Eve and sustains it in its supernatural life--

characteristic of the Garden of Eden – Paradise. They have a royal

priesthood. However, Adam was made the High Priest. He was

chosen by God to be the instrument of God’s Grace to his wife

Eve. Before you get all excited and call this a “sexist” interpreta-

tion of Scripture, remember what I said earlier: Genesis must be

understood in light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is

the new Adam. All Grace flows from Jesus Christ. Without His

act of obedience to overturn the disobedience of Adam, Sanctify-

ing Grace would never be restored to the world. Eve’s sin did not

cause the fall of mankind because Grace flows from Adam. Mary,

the new eve gave her obedience to God and the Annunciation.

However, her obedience did not save us. God, in response to

Mary’s yes, became man in the person of Jesus Christ, the Second

Person of the Trinity. Jesus, in so doing, gives His obedience to

the Father in that He will not grasp at the Divinity (even though it

is His by nature and right) even to the point of death, death on the

cross. Jesus is the new Adam and overturns the disobedience of

the old Adam. Mary cooperated in an altogether singular way in

the work of redemption by her obedience, but it was still the obedi-

ence of Jesus that saves us. Eve cooperated in altogether singular

way in the fall of mankind by her disobedience, but it was still the

disobedience of Adam that brought about the fall of mankind.

When Jesus saved us, He went into the “sleep” of death.

At the time of His death, the soldier pierced His side with a lance

and out flowed blood and water. This symbolized the flow of

Grace and Mercy to the world. It also symbolizes the birth of the

Church. Just as Eve was formed from the side of Adam, so the

Church is formed from the side of Christ. The Church is the Bride

of Christ. Just as all grace flowed from Adam to his bride Eve, so

too all grace flows from Jesus to His bride the Church. Just as all

grace flowed from Adam and Eve to the world to sustain it in its

supernatural state, so too all grace flows from Jesus and His bride

the Church to the world to restore it to its supernatural state.

Let us return to Genesis and the sin of Adam and Eve. As

it was mentioned Eve sinned first and nothing happened. When

Adam took part in this sin, all “hell” broke loose (pun intended).

What is the nature of this sin? First, all sin is rooted in pride, the

desire to be one’s own God. Every sin is ultimately saying: “I

decide that this X is good, even though God has declared it evil.”

We may know it is not good for us over all, but we perceive a

good, even if momentary and miniscule, and we choose that good

over the greater good of God’s will. Every evil is disguised as

good. So it was for the sin of Adam. Second, every sin is an act of

disobedience to God – to will what God does not will, to choose

the creature over the Creator, to reject the greater Good for a lesser

good. There is nothing wrong with choosing a lesser good as long

as it corresponds to the permissive will of God and therefore is not

against the greater good of God’s will. We must trust God, as He

knows our greatest good and wills it for us. Every sin is a failure

to trust God. So it was for the sin of Adam. Adam and Eve’s sin

was a personal sin. They freely chose to turn away from God and

listen to the creature in an act of disobedience. In so doing, Adam

lost sanctifying grace for himself, for his wife Eve, and for all cre-

ation. This means that Adam, Eve, and all of creation will suffer a

loss. They will lose a share in God’s Life and Love, in God’s

Goodness. There will be an absence of Grace, and absence of

Goodness that, while not to the nature of creation, was willed by

God for creation. Since it is willed by God, but absent from it, we

can speak of an evil in nature itself. All of creation is fallen.

However, since the sins of Adam and Eve is committed in the

realm of space, time, and matter, the sin and the effects are not

definitive (Adam and Eve did not lose all grace), nor are all its

effects immediate. Some effects are immediate: the loss of Sancti-

fying Grace, the darkening of the intellect, and the concupiscence

of the flesh. Adam and Eve still will have actual grace so that all

might not be lost as it was for the fallen Angels.

In Jesus and Mary,
