THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST

Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

An Email

Like most administrators, I cringe every morning when I open emails. In our world of virtual communication, email can be a forum for someone to say things that they would never say in person; and from time to time I get those emails.

However, I received one the other day concerning our parish school. The writer is not a parishioner, but attended the end of year school mass. I thought you might enjoy reading parts of it.

Mass begins….. and every student in that church sang to the Heavens!!! I have never heard anything like it in my life. Parents jaws were dropping. Their voice inflection, unity, and softness was unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. It was as if the Von Trapp Family Children from the Sound of Music entered this Church. The tears on the adults just started flowing. Father Baker was down on the floor speaking with the children and like a Broadway performance every song got better than the next. They even sang the “Amen” or “And with Your spirit” responses to prayers. Like Angels on Earth. What was even more remarkable was that none of the students used a song book. And by the way, the songs were tear jerkers on their own. They were children’s hymns and the words were beyond special. . . . I was in continual awe of these children and how much they were able to recite all the proper prayers, God blesses, etc. Quite frankly, being in a Church with all children has a magic about it. It was like listening to Angels on Earth. I simply could not get enough of it.

Many people are shocked when I say how much I love being the pastor of a church with a school. I struggle to express it clearly, and I think they walk away scratching their heads.

I love being the pastor of St. Stephen of Hungary School because what this person experienced I get to see and hear all the time. I want to work next year on allowing more of you to experience too. Father Baker

From Your Pastor July 2nd, 2017

Dear Saint Thomas,

You were once slow in believing that Christ had gloriously risen; but later, because you had seen him, you exclaimed: "My Lord and my God!" According to an ancient story, you rendered most powerful assistance for constructing a church in a place where pagan priests opposed it. Please bless architects, builds and carpenters that through them the Lord may be honored. Monday July 3rd

July 2nd,2017

It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.
