From the Pastor Dear Parishioners,

Welcome to November, the month dedicated to prayer for our beloved dead. November 2nd, the church commemorated the faithful departed. A special mass we celebrated here at St. Mary to prayer for all those buried from our parish in the past year. A growing trend is that many people to not offer a mass for their family member after the person has died. Rather, “a celebration of life” is celebrated at a local restaurant or at the family home. While these “celebrations of life” are all good in themselves, one of the precepts of the church is that we pray for the dead. In the funeral rites, it says that “with faith and hope in eternal life, let us assist him/her with our prayers”.

As you can see in our weekly bulletin, each and every mass has an intention. While every mass is offered for all the living and deceased, we make a special intention to pray for that person for which the mass is being offered. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us in paragraph 1032: “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice (Mass), so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God”.

All of us want to believe that we all die and go directly to heaven. Some might even say that hell and purgatory exist here on earth. In a very real sense we do share in the sufferings of Christ here on earth, but, at the particular judgment (moment of death), we will all give an account of our lives before God. In paragraph 1030 of the Catechism, it says: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven”.

So, during this month of prayer for our beloved dead, let us pray for all those who have gone before us, especially those still in need of our prayers. Let us offer masses for them and do works of charity in their name, so that all may live with God and all the saints forever in heaven.

Sincerely in the Lord,

Fr. Joe

ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIPPING SINCE 1911

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Sunday, November 3rd, the children in the Religious Education Program, from fifth and sixth grade, will participate in an introduction to the approaching Advent Season. While there are people new to the Catholic Faith, many families have a long history of the faith being handed down from one generation to the next. Many of our special family traditions are based on the seasons and feasts of the Catholic Church. The ways holy days are celebrated in the Mass are often adapted for use at home.

At our gathering we will be discussing church traditions, how we were brought into the faith, and how we can share our experience with others. St. Mary parishioner, Marianne Kleine, will share part of her faith story with the group. Parents will also be sharing their own family faith stories with their children. Hopefully, the children will not only learn about the church seasons but about their own family traditions in a new light.

The children will be asked to write a thank you to a relative or to someone associated with their family that is important to their family faith life. Substitutes Needed – If you would be interested in being a substitute for Sunday morning or Tuesday afternoon, contact Gail Ferraiolo. We will help you with any questions or if training is needed. Prayer God of life and love, in every time and place you call people to serve you. No one is too young to praise you: no one is too old to respond to your call. Help us to answer your call with all our hearts, turning away from sin to follow Christ’s example. Show us how to share the Good News with others in our words and in our deeds. Through Christ our Lord, Amen. Deepening the Journey The Deepening the Journey” ministry was established over 10 years ago with the primary objective to provide a forum for adults to continue their spiritual journey. Our knowledge of the faith needs to be ever growing, NOT STATIC, remembering what we learned as children and then bringing it forward into our lives today. When we come together, we help each other to learn the importance of prayer, kindness, unconditional love, forgiveness and what it means to live our faith as adults in today’s world. Our sessions typically involve prayer, group discussions and video presentations given by religious educators on chosen topics that are of interest to the group. Deepening the Journey meets on Monday evenings from 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM in the Fr. Kevin Cahill Room. Please come and join us as we grow together in faith. Save the Date! Shroud Encounter ! SHROUD ENCOUNTER is a dramatic, fast-moving BIG SCREEN experience using over 200 superb images. Similar to a CSI investigation, Russ Breault explores the science, history and mystery surrounding this amazing artifact peeling back each layer of mystery. Both Crucifixion and Resurrection are explored in stunning detail all the way to Doubting Thomas – who represents the message of the Shroud.

Saturday, November 16th, 6:30 PM. Prior to the presentation a pizza dinner will be available from 5:45 PM – 6:20 PM. Sunday, November 17th at 1:15 PM. Light refreshments will be available.

Reservations necessary by November 7th for both above. Please call 201-768-1600. Immaculate Conception, 211 Summit Street, Norwood.

ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIPPING SINCE 1911

In-Depth Discussion at St. Mary's Join us for an engaging discussion at Saint Mary's.

On Wednesday, November 6th and 20th, 7:00 PM, Mr. Bill Deegan will present a discussion on the Proof of the Existence of God. The discussion will focus on the use of two arguments, the first by reason and deduction and the second by revelation. This promises to be a thought-provoking and theologically beautiful presentation. Mr. Deegan, a license and registered pharmacist, is a married father of two adult children. Bill has a great love of Catholic theology which has ardently studied and taught throughout his life.

Can we know God outside of the Scriptures (extra-scripturaly)? Is it possible to know God exists from our senses alone; throwing away all eye-witness accounts and actions (i.e.: from circumstantial evidence)? You bet it is! Our world is crammed with heaven, and every common bush is afire with God! Those of us with eyes ought to see---those of us with ears ought to hear.

Knowing God by abductive reasoning (listing evidence and positing explanations for the evidence)—then making reasonable, feasible, simple, and logical conclusions from the things seen (Occam’s razor).

So, If you know with all your heart, or if your sure that you do not know, or if you are agnostic, and just aren’t sure. Why not come and know the unmoved first mover, the uncreated creator, the undesigned designer. Who knows, this might rekindle a fire lying hidden within you—what do you have to lose?

Free admission. Please RSVP with [email protected] or the parish office at 201-768-7565. Three Squares Ministry: Gaining Weight! Thank you to St Mary's parishioners for bringing 80 lbs. of food to the church last weekend as part of our Three Squares Ministry. Our volunteers distributed the food immediately to local pantries. The food collection occurs every FOURTH SUNDAY of the MONTH at St. Mary's. All that we have and do comes from God and we share with those in need, indeed!

Human Trafficking Discussion Re-cap Sister Joann Aumand, SCC, presented a very real witness to the devastating effects that human trafficking has upon not only upon the individuals being trafficked but on society. The United States is a MAJOR destination for those being trafficking and imprisoned in this nightmare. Sister has worked with local police, the FBI and other agencies to rescue people being trafficked, some as young as FOUR years old right here in New Jersey. Men, women and children are victims of prostitution, forced labor (in restaurants, hotels, construction, salons and MANY types of businesses), begging, working in the homes of the traffickers. Signs of a trafficked victim are isolation – not being able to socialize alone or come and go freely, always being "accompanied," fear of talking to others, always at work (no days off, long hours). If you suspect someone is being trafficked call the local police and express your concern. Freedom is the greatest of human rights, your call may free this person and their children. Those who attended the discussion at St Mary's donated $350 to Polaris, a victim's helping non-profit. Student Choir: A New Approach Every family's schedule is different, so we are making this as easy as possible with only ONE meeting time per week, that being on Sunday at 9:00 AM, then the group just stays and sings for the Mass at 9:30 AM. Students in grades 3 are welcome to participate to learn about music, the Mass, service and to be with other students and families that want to learn the faith, love God and be the best that they can be.

The group will sing again on Sunday, November 3rd and then November 17th, meeting up at 9:00 AM.

Please see Mr. Louis Scarpa after any mass or send an E to [email protected] to get involved "CHURCH!"

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.”
