From the Pastor
THAT CHRIST MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS BY
FAITH
ON LEAVING HOME
Image from Cassie Pease Designs, cassiepeasedesigns.com. Look for her
beau!ful images very soon in the sacristy hallway!
I have been medita!ng on this famous and beau!ful insight (and the
Scripture passages on which it is based) from the Li"le Flower, St. Therese of
Lisieux, for some !me. In the last few years, my parents began to undertake
renova!ons to my childhood home, where they have lived for nearly thirty
years. My sister and I grew up in that house, and even though we “le#” years
ago, it was s!ll home because we could always go back there and immediately
feel “at home”. The renova!ons of the last few years have intensified this year,
and soon became all-out prepara!ons to put the house on the market, which
happened just a few weeks ago. St. Joseph indeed watched over the process,
as the house sold very rapidly. At the same !me, Mom & Dad have secured a
new modest townhome in Hugo, about 15 minutes north of the old house in
Li"le Canada. I am very happy for them as they downsize and simplify, and I
look forward to visi!ng a new home and possibly staying there some!mes on
my day off as a quiet place to rest and relax when I want to stay closer to home
but not go very far away. Add to that that they will be within walking distance
of one of my all-!me favorite coffee shops from my days at St. Peter’s in Forest
Lake, it should be a great place for them. I’m happy for them and thankful for
all the sacrifices they’ve made. In truth, they could have lived in a much nicer
place over the years if not for all the many sacrifices they made for my sister
and me.
All the same, I shall miss 75 Jessica Court very much. It holds many
precious memories: days of celebra!ng the recep!on of sacraments (including
Holy Orders), gradua!ons, birthdays, Christmases and Easters, and many, many
gatherings with my beloved grandparents. All the nights doing homework
growing up, first and last days of school, coming home for the first
Thanksgiving break from college, and so many more. Even though no dwelling
this side of heaven is our “true” home (as St. Therese reminds us), a place
where we sense that we are at home gives us a foretaste of what heaven will
be like. This is, by the way, why we must always
remember in prayer those who do not have the
blessing of a happy and peaceful family or home.
Heaven is not heaven because there will be a lot of
stuff we like, and thus we will be able to infinitely
amuse ourselves with an endless supply of earthly
laughs and pas!mes. Heaven will be heaven because
we will have a sense of being “known” in the most
in!mate and powerful way, even more than that
sweet happiness of going to Mom & Dad’s. We will
know that we are known by our Heavenly Father,
and we will know Him perfectly in His House. We will
sit at Jesus’ Eternal Table, far be"er than the best
kitchen or dining room table in the happiest of family
homes. We will know the perfect bond of peace in
the Holy Spirit, be"er than any conversa!on we
could ever hope to have with loved ones. The
Blessed Mother and all the saints will welcome us to
that home, and we will not miss the ship.
WELCOME
This past week, our new staff member John
Ristow began his !me with us at St. Michael’s. Even
though his presence has been acknowledged
elsewhere, I want to offer my own personal good
wishes to John as he begins to serve us and the
maintenance of our facili!es. Thank you John! At the
same !me, I would also like to thank the soon-to-be-
depar!ng Bill Kilzer for working with John this past
week to get him up to speed.
VACATION
I am very grateful to Fr. Dennis Mar!n of
Unbound who is with us this weekend as I set off on
my summer vaca!on. While I have been away quite a
bit of late, I hope you understand that much of it has
been for what are really extensions of my ministry
and not true vaca!on. Unbound is a wonderful
ministry that we are very pleased to welcome back to
St. Michael’s a#er their previous visit in 2012.

The Pick of the Week is “Ode to Saint Cecilia” and can be heard
by going to www.formed.org. Meet an inspiring woman with
fierce courage and unwavering faith, willing to follow the path of
beauty and truth- no ma"er the cost. Saint Cecilia’s remarkable
story will come to life in Augus!ne Ins!tute Radio Theatre’s
most recent audio drama featuring award-winning actors and
cinema!c sound and music.
View Opening the Word, Year B – Ordinary Time, Weeks 8-21
series. The episode of June 24 is en!tled, “Na!vity of John the
Bap!st.” The prophets were not fortune tellers – they were
messengers. They were chosen by the Lord to remind His people
that He was real and had a good plan for them. The prophets
were sent to call the Israelites back to their true God. The
message God entrusted to them was meant to grow a deeper
faith in the hearts of God’s people. But not all of God’s people
responded with greater faith. Some were too overcome by fear
to surrender in trust to the Lord. We each s!ll face this same
choice today. When the Lord’s word is spoken into our life we
can either respond with fear or recep!vity. God is always calling
us to respond with greater trust and wonder, and He gives us His
own Spirit to make it possible.
At no cost to you, the parish has made available FORMED to
assist you and your family on your journey of faith. Please go to
www.formed.org and enter the parish’s code: 3N79X3 to begin
enjoying both of the above-men!oned programs and many
other resources for children, youth and adults.
