“Recapture the Dream”
A Dream Come True!
From the Pastor
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time - A
October 29, 2017
This week we celebrate the two ‘Festivals of the Great Harvest’ as some call them: All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day. I encourage all to attend holy Mass not only on Wednesday’s holy day of obligation, All Saints, but also on Thursday’s Commemoration of All
the Faithful Departed. These two days offer great hope for the living and the dead. First, we celebrate with those who, like Saint Paul, can say “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith” and have received “the crown of righteousness … which the Lord, the just judge, will award … to all who have longed for his appearance.” [C.f.: 2 Timothy 4:7-8] Then we pray for all who are still doing penance for their sins, for as Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.” [Matthew 5:26] The following orations may be used at Masses offered for our deceased Relatives, Friends and Benefactors.
Collect - Deceased Relatives, Friends & Benefactors
O God, giver of pardon and loving author of our salvation, grant, we pray you, in your mercy,
that, through the intercession of Blessed Mary, ever-Virgin, and all your Saints, the members, friends, and benefactors of our community,
who have passed from this world, may attain a share in eternal happiness.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ … and ever. Amen.
GOD WILLS EVERYONE TO BE SAVED. The
Church’s firm belief that prayers can be offered for others, even for the dead, has many biblical roots. As Saint Paul wrote: “… I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved.” [1 Timothy 2:1, 3-4a] And it just makes logical sense that God gives us the means AND the time needed for all to be saved. And since God also made our Faith a communal affair, it is only ‘right and just’ that we pray for the dead and offer sacrifices for them. For whom will you pray for this week?
Prayer over the Offerings - Deceased Relatives, etc.
O God, whose mercy is beyond measure, receive with favor our humble prayers
and through the Sacrament of our salvation grant to the souls of our relatives, friends, and benefactors, remission of all their sins.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
WHO WILL PRAY FOR US WHEN WE’RE DEAD? This may seem a silly question, but more
than once - a person who went to daily Mass died and had no Funeral Mass or any Catholic burial rites - because no one in their family went to church! Sometimes people do not get all they hope for at their funeral because they never wrote it down or made it known. Not that their salvation is in jeopardy; God surely does not hold such things against those who do not get a proper Christian Burial because someone else denies it. But it’s sad for fellow parishioners, who may have worshipped with them every day and never got a chance to formally say goodbye or publicly pray for them. A word to the wise: pre-plan your funeral; you can even choose your own readings, hymns, etc. Contact the Parish Office to make funeral pre-arrangements.
Prayer after Communion - Deceased Relatives, etc.
Grant, we pray, almighty and merciful God, that the souls of our relatives, friends, and
benefactors, for whom we have offered this sacrifice of praise to your majesty, may,
through the power of this Sacrament, be cleansed of all their sins,
and receive from your mercy the happiness of perpetual light. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
CATHOLIC WAYS TO PRAY FOR THE DEAD. The most profound and beneficial way to pray for the dead is to have holy Mass offered for their intention. Or light a 4-day votive candle; arrange to have an annual candle lit for them; memorialize the bread and wine offered at Mass, or the Sanctuary Lamp that burns near the
tabernacle, or one that burns near a statue. Visit the cemetery; bless the grave; create a shrine at home. Above all, come to Mass on All Souls’ Day!
With God’s love and my prayers,
Very Rev. Michael J. Kreder, KHS

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 This passage from the book of Exodus enjoins all to adhere to specific religious and social laws. It urges all to act with justice and compassion towards others. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Paul praises the Thessalonians for receiving the word of God so eagerly and totally. Word of their faithfulness has spread throughout Macedonia and Greece; they have become a model for all Christians. Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 Matthew recounts the incident in which a lawyer, seeking to entrap Jesus, asks, “Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest?” With simplicity and authority, Jesus responds that the first commandment is to love God with one’s entire being; the second is to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

RCIA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
The RCIA is a rite through which the Church celebrates the sacrament of Baptism of adults. The central purpose is conversion. Who are the participants? Persons who were never baptized in any tradition, individuals who have been baptized
in another tradition who seek full communion with entrance into the Catholic Church or baptized Catholics who seek to complete their initiation by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and/or Holy Eucharist. During the RCIA Process the participants attend sessions that study the doctrines, sacraments, and moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Prayer, reflection, sharing and Bible readings are essential to each meeting. Speak to a priest, deacon or call Mary Kay Benjamin (201) 438-2476 for further information.

CHRISTMAS DECORATING “Can you find some time for us?”
We are coming up on our Christmas church decorating
season. We are always looking for anyone who is
interested in helping as “many hands make light
work” BUT, this year, we are looking ESPECIALLY for
the following: THREE MEN who would be willing to
learn how to ERECT THE STAINED-GLASS WINDOW
that SITS ON THE WALL BEHIND THE ALTAR for the
Christmas season. This is not a particularly difficult task
but one that REQUIRES CAREFUL AND PATIENT
INSTALLATION as this is a VALUABLE WINDOW.
Complete instructions will be given by someone who
has done it many times. Also, we are looking for
someone who is willing to learn how to HANG
VARIOUS THINGS throughout the church at different
times of the year. This person must be WILLING TO
CLIMB AN EXTENSION LADDER as many of the items
are hung rather high such as the WREATHS ON THE
WALL IN THE NARTHEX and the WREATHS OUTSIDE
THE CHURCH over the Christmas season, the BLUE
FABRIC THAT IS HUNG BEHIND THE BLESSED MOTHER
in the front of church, etc. It bears repeating, this
person must be comfortable on a high ladder. If you
are able to assist us or need more information, please
call Debbie Moran in the church office at 201-438-2200
or Linda Verdino at 201-438-2980.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS
OF HOLY COMMUNION
AND READERS
Please sign up for a Holyday Mass! Sign-up sheets will
be available in the weekend sacristy. Knowing who is
available before each Mass helps us minister more
comfortably.
HOMEBOUND EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS
OF HOLY COMMUNION
All EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION are strongly encouraged to bring the Eucharist to the homebound “communion calls”. Since the sick and homebound share so intimately in the Lord’s cross, they deserve to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: please make every effort to bring them the Gift of Our Eucharistic Lord and their caretakers. Call the parish office if you are homebound and wish a visit from our ministers.
PARISH REGISTRATION
If you are presently not on our mailing list, receiving envelopes and the various parish mailings, chances are that you are not a registered member of our parish. You are NOT automatically a registered member because you were married here or even if you were brought up here and lived in the parish with your parents – or went to school here. Membership is by FORMAL registration ONLY. Call the Parish Office – (201) 438-2200 to see if you are registered and if not, let us help you become an official member of Saint Mary Parish. Thank you.
MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM Many BUSINESSES are MATCHING GIFT CORPORATIONS. A list is available in the Parish Office if you are unsure if your company is part of the program. If you work for one of the participating companies, your gift could be worth TWICE as much by having it MATCHED by your corporation. A simple form can be obtained by your company and passed on to us. May the Lord, who can never be outdone in generosity, bless you for your goodness!
WHAT IS THE LAZARUS MINISTRY? "Lazarus" is a group of parishioners who attend funeral
masses to show the support of the parish at this
sorrowful time. They serve as readers, extraordinary
ministers of Holy Communion, ushers and assist in any
way necessary. Anyone interested in this corporal
work of mercy is MOST WELCOME to join us and
participate as their time and talent permits. Please call
the Parish Office at (201) 438-2200 for further details.
