William ShakespeareDear Parishioners,

This coming Thursday our Nation will celebrate Thanks-giving. We know, of course, that giving thanks ought not to be just on Thanksgiving Day, but needs to be a regular part of our religious practice.

Embarrassingly, don’t we find ourselves from time to time far from a spirit of active gratitude? Nevertheless, do we ever really find ourselves actively seeking a spirit of ingratitude? Who really gets up in the morning and says, “today, I am go-ing to be ungrateful”? We might not be terribly grateful for something happening in our world, country, church, family or workplace, but to have an overarching spirit of active ingratitude doesn’t seem quite the norm.

We most likely become, to use Shakespeare’s simile, unkinder than the “winter wind” not be-cause of what we actively do with respect to ingratitude, but because of what we don’t do. We most likely fall into a state of ingratitude, simply because of a lack of active, fully conscious gratitude.

This is frightening in a way. The only remedy for ingrat-itude, it seems, is gratitude. There appears to be no spiritual middle ground here. We are either grateful or ungrateful. I sus-pect this is one of the reasons that St. Paul says, "be always joy-ful, pray at all times, be thankful in all circumstances" (1 Thess 5:17,18) and "be filled with thanksgiving" (Col 2:7). Without that stance, the spirit of ingratitude creeps in.

But how are we to stay centered in a never wavering spirit of gratitude?

Some of us may have memories, I know I do, of our par-ents or grandparents at one time or another calling out our ingratitude: “you children are so ungrateful!” Being told this may have sounded negative, even harsh at the time. Maybe the accusation seemed even a bit unjust, since we probably were not actively seeking to be ungrateful. Nevertheless, recalling these memories, may have positive benefit. They can serve as reminders, little wake up calls, for us to center ourselves on having a daily attitude of gratitude.

Another way to stay actively centered in an attitude of grat-itude is to engage prayerfully in a daily examination of con-sciousness or Examen. In that prayer, we always seek the grace of gratitude. We consider, for instance, what we have experi-enced that day, where God and God’s consolation was or can be found. This prayerful exercise serves to deepen our sense

ción de Gracias. Sabemos, por supuesto, que dar gracias no debe ser sólo el Día de Acción de Gracias, sino que tiene que ser una parte regular de nuestra práctica religiosa.

Vergonzosamente, ¿no nos encontramos de vez en cuando lejos de un espíritu de gratitud activa? Sin embargo, ¿realmente nos encontramos activamente buscando un espíritu de ingrat-itud? ¿Quién realmente se levanta por la mañana y dice, "hoy

voy a ser desagradecido"? Tal vez no estemos totalmente agradecidos por algo que sucede en nuestro mundo, país, iglesia, familia o lugar de trabajo, pero tener un espíritu general de ingrat-itud activa no parece una norma.

Lo más probable es que nos volvamos, para usar el símil de Shakespeare, más crueles que el

"viento de invierno" no por lo que hacemos activamente con respecto a la ingratitud, sino por lo que no hacemos. Lo más probable es que caigamos en un estado de ingratitud, simple-mente por la falta de gratitud activa, plena y consciente.

Esto es aterrador en cierto modo. El único remedio para la ingratitud, al parecer, es la gratitud. Parece que aquí no hay un punto medio espiritual. Somos agradecidos o desagradecidos. Sospecho que esta es una de las razones por las que san Pab-lo dice: "estén siempre gozosos, oren en todo momento, sean agradecidos en todas las circunstancias" (1 Te. 5,17,18) y "estén llenos de acción de gracias" (Col 2, 7). Sin esa postura, el espíritu de la ingratitud nos arrastra.

Sin embargo, ¿cómo vamos a permanecer centrados en un espíritu de gratitud nunca vacilante?

Algunos de nosotros podemos tener recuerdos, sé que lo hago, de nuestros padres o abuelos en un momento u otro llamando a nuestra ingratitud: "Ustedes los niños son tan desagradecidos!" Ser dicho de esta manera, esto puede sonar negativo, incluso duro en el momento. Tal vez la acusación pareciera incluso un poco injusta, ya que probablemente no estábamos buscando activamente ser desagradecidos. Sin em-bargo, recordando estas memorias, puede tener un beneficio positivo. Pueden servir como recordatorios, pequeñas llamadas de atención, para que nos centremos en tener una actitud diaria de gratitud.

Otra manera para mantenerse activamente centrado en una actitud de gratitud es participar en oración en un ex-amen diario de conciencia. En esa oración, buscamos siempre

in spite of the darkest of days, in spite of everything in this world being taken away from us, we can still have an attitude of gratitude. Why? Simply because we have a deep, steadfast faith in a loving heavenly Father who cares for us and a Sav-ior who loved us so much that he died for us, giving us the promise of eternal life. Now, that is something about which we can always actively be thankful!
