Dear Parishioners, At the end of last week we received a call from the bishop’s office in which he asked if it would be alright if he visited our parish on Sunday evening. Of course we said yes with the result that, last Sunday, Bishop Barres and our Vocation Director, Fr. Sean Magaldi, celebrat-ed our 5:00pm Mass and the 7:00pm Misa in our beautiful his-toric Chapel. It was an honor to host him and I was heartened to see the in-teractions our parishioners had with him as he spent ample time speaking individually with each one. Bishop Barres has a reputation as a bishop who is accessible to his people, spend-ing time in several different parishes every weekend. Parish-ioners will recall that this was not his first visit here. I admire this about him because for me, as a priest, ministry with the people is very rewarding. The demands of the episcopacy are such that those men who serve us often sacrifice this for the greater good of the Church. This was on my mind as I was preparing for the Feast Day of our glorious patron, Saint Dominic, next week (Thursday, Au-gust 8th.) As I reviewed the details of his life seven hundred years ago, I learned that he was approached many times about becoming a bishop but he resisted it every time. Why? Dominic believed that his work as founder of the Order of Preachers and giving mission for the people was too important to give it up. For the Church to go on, not every man can do what Dominic did. Some must serve as our shepherds. Every Mass we do pray for the pope and “John, our bishop,” in the Eucharistic Prayer, and although we rarely reflect on this, I believe we pray for good reason. Our bishops need our prayers. Saint Dominic is also credited with promoting the Holy Rosary for the people to pray. Perhaps, from time to time, we ought to consider offering a rosary for our bishops that, through the intercession of Our Lady, God might give these leaders the graces they need to guide us in these difficult times? With them and you in service of Him,
Fr. Tom, Bishop Barres, Deacon Jay, Genevieve Fallon &
Colin Maher

Dominic concluded that the only way to regain these heretics was to live a life equal in austerity; preachers must travel barefoot, live in poverty and display real sanctity and humility. Dominic’s de-sign for a preaching order, the Dominicans “The Order of Preachers” was formally sanctioned by Pope Honorius III in 1216. and followed the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas. He placed two of his princi-pal houses near Universities (Paris & Bologna) and decided that each of his houses should form a school of Theology which established a central role the Dominicans would play in university studies. The current Pontifical Dominican University is located in Washington, DC. St. Dominic is attributed with the spread of the Rosary. Dominic said that the Marian prayer is at the heart of his order, “It is the very principle and foundation on which the Order rests.” For centuries, Dominicans have been essential in emphasizing the Catholic belief in the power of the Holy Rosary.
The lives of the saints speak to us across time; perhaps, we see our stories echoed within theirs? If their holiness can shine in their lives, maybe we can radiate God’s love in our
own time.
FEAST DAY AUGUST 8TH
SAINT SPOTLIGHT
Domingo de Guzman was born in Caleruega, Spain, in 1711 a few miles south of The Benedictine Abbey of Santo Domin-go de Silos. It is said that his mother, Juanna of Aza had a dream before he was born where a dog leapt from her womb carrying a burning torch in its mouth and then seemed to set the world ablaze with fire. The latin version of Domingo is Domnic and the order he founded, the Dominicans comes from the latin Dominicanis - a play on words meaning “Dog of the Lord.” His mother was beatified by Pope Leo XII in 1828, Blessed Jane of Aza. Dominic, the son of a wealthy and noble family, was educated in the schools of Palencia where he studied the arts and theol-ogy. He then joined the Canons Regular in the Cathedral of Osma which followed the rule of Saint Augustine. He be-came subprior to the superior and was sent abroad on mis-sions. These journeys first made Dominic aware of the threat of Albigensian heretics to the Roman Catholic Church. These heretics believed that two supreme beings, Good and Evil, dominated the spirit and matter respectively so that whatever concerned the physical world—eating, drinking, procreation, and possession of worldly goods was essentially evil. They led a life of great austerity, considered only them-selves perfect and regarded ordinary people as reprobates.
Legend says that, while in Rome, Dominic received a vision of a beggar who, like Dominic, would do great things for the Catholic Faith. Dominic met the beggar the next day. He embraced him and said, “You are my companion and must walk with me. If we hold together, no earthly power can withstand us.” The beggar was St. Francis of Assisi. To this day, Fran-ciscans and the Dominicans visit each other on their feast days.
R.C.I.A. – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
If you are reading this in the bulletin, you are most likely already part of the worshipping community here at The Church of St. Dominic. However, you or someone you know might not
be a member of our faith or fully initiated into the Church.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, otherwise known as RCIA is a process by which young people and adults enter into a conversion experience and develop a deeper relationship with
the Lord through the Catholic faith.
RCIA is for:
• Individuals who have never been baptized in the Christian faith; or • Individuals who may have been baptized in another Christian denomination but wish to
become members of the Catholic Church; or • Individuals who have been baptized in the Catholic Church but never received all the
sacraments of Initiation (Communion and/or Confirmation) •
All our RCIA sessions are held every Thursday evening from 7:30 P.M. – 9:15 P.M. in the Silver Center. We will begin our 2019/2020 Sessions in early October and will continue through Pentecost. For more information and to register for the classes, please contact the Parish
Office at 516-922-4488 or Sue Schwartz at 516-692-4180.

St Dominic’s Adult Choir has long been a source of pride and beauty for St Dominic’s Parish. For many years volun-teer parishioners have joyfully given their time and talent in song. Currently, there are 28 active members of the Adult Choir. We sing regularly at the 11:30am Parish Choir Mass. Al-so, we sing for the Triduum, Christmas Midnight Mass, Confirmation, 1st Communions and at all our outdoor masses. Through challenge and hard work each member of the group has grown musically in recent years. We are now able to sing a cappella with confidence. We sing in Latin as much as in English and we present a wide variety of musical styles; from the classics to newly published contemporary choral anthems. As important as our gift of song to the parish is, the members of the Adult Choir gain a great blessing and benefit from participation in the program. We have become a spiritual family to each other, we sing together and we pray together. Over the years, we’ve each of us had our burdens and trials lightened by the Holy Spirit working through song and in the bonds of fellowship formed through our practice of this ancient art form. We are always looking for more mem-bers. And, most importantly:
No experience required!!! Please consider giving choral singing a try. You can participate in this coming fall semester and sing with us for Christmas! Midnight Mass and the Easter Vigil are accompanied with brass and timpani. The Lessons and Carols joins the entire musical community of St Dominic’s; High School, Primary School and Parish joined by a professional string quartet. You do not need to know how to sing to start with us on Thursday, September 5th in the Main Church at 7:30pm. Here are some health benefits to choral singing recently cited in the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter: • Researchers studied antibodies (part of a healthy immune response) in members of an amateur choir and found that the levels went up when they were singing. Clinical proof that singing makes you feel good. • In surveys conducted in Washington DC and Brooklyn senior members of choruses reported better health and few-er falls than nonsingers. • The Alzheimer’s Society reports that singing familiar songs and learning new ones can help build self-esteem and alleviate loneliness. Many experts think singing may at the very least help delay the onset of memory problems. Neurobiologists believe that singing is genetic in origin, and that it helps the brain evolve.
So, come and praise the Lord by volunteering your time and reap the health benefits as a bonus!
