The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked

with Jesus all day, but it was not until they offered Him hospitality and He blessed

and broke the bread that they recognized Him. Simple acts of loving kindness still reveal the

Third Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. — Acts 2:28

SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2017 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Dear Parishioners,

It brings me great pleasure to recommend, Mary of Nazareth – History, Archaeology – Legends (originally in German and recently translated into English, but not yet in Italian as far as I can tell). I just finished reading it before Easter.

This book offers fascinating insights into the life of Our Lady. The Bible gives us a portrait of a woman of profound faith and trust in God, great courage and deep devotion. She is the most influential woman in history, without a doubt. Yet who would not like to know her more deeply? This book gives us such a possibility.

The author recounts his search for Mary of Nazareth in the tradition of the search for the historical Jesus of Nazareth. Yet, Hesemann shows that fidelity to rigorous historical research does not need to come at the price of renouncing faith. One the contrary, faith and reason can work in tandem, purifying and challenging each other to discover the truth.

Hesemann, therefore, starts with the Biblical text, taking as his point of departure the familiar passages and stories about Our Lady from the Gospels. Then he broadens the framework. He seeks out other sources that might also cast light on Mary. He uses non-Biblical sources – both Christian and non-Christian – as well as a variety of traditions from Israel, Syria, Persia, Egypt, Rome, Turkey and beyond. He demonstrates a deep knowledge of archaeology, art history and architecture, all of which help to furnish additional evidences.

The result of this enormous work is Mary of Nazareth (Maria von Nazareth). It begins with the search for the oldest image of Our Lady, which he believes can now be found in a little convent on Monte Mario in Rome. The Advocata, which adorns the cover of the book, presents Mary’s beautiful mature face, whose eyes lovely gaze upon the observer. Advocata, a most ancient title of Our Lady, refers first and foremost to her role as intercessor, and it also underscores her relationship to Holy Spirit, the paraclete, who is the advocatus in Latin. In union with Jesus, they defend us against our mortal enemies: sin, death and the Devil.

From Monte Mario, Hesemann takes the reader on a journey of the places of Mary – to her family’s home (he argues it was Jerusalem, close to the Temple); to her childhood service in the Temple (recalled in the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lady; to Nazareth (the annunciation), the Galilean village of the tribe of David (who did not wish to be near the blood-thirsty and paranoid Herod the Great); to Bethlehem (David’s people near Jerusalem) due to the census (and the question of the dating of the birth of the Savior); to the visit of the Magi, who came from Persia he argues; to Egypt, where the Holy Family sought refuge until the tyrant’s death; to Mary’s discipleship to the Calvary; to Ephesus with John, and finally to her Assumption in Jerusalem.

I found this book very hard to put down! It brings together so much material in a delightful way and I feel I have a much better sense of the life of Our Lady. I plan to present many of these important insights in the months to come.

God bless you, Father Elias

Cari parrocchiani,
