The very height of our worship as Roman Catholics is the reception of Holy Communion. In this sacred moment heaven and earth meet and we come into contact with the Risen Jesus in the closest way possible until we are united with Him in heaven. It is for these reasons that Catholics should NEVER approach our Lord in Holy Communion when conscious of mortal sin not yet absolved in sacramental confession. Many people believe that asking God to forgive mortal sin can be done by themselves without going to confession. Jesus Himself gave to Peter and those ordained after him the power to forgive sins. Mortal sin CANNOT be absolved without going to confession to a priest. Once in a state of grace, the Catholic approaches our Lord to receive into his or her own body the very body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. When we receive Holy Communion it is NOT symbolic. We believe that the priest during the Mass at the moment of the consecration changes the bread and wine into the ACTUAL body and blood of Christ. The miracle which occurs at every Mass is called “Transubstantiation.” It means that the substance of the bread and wine are changed while their appearances remain the same. In approaching our Lord to receive Him, we should be sure that we have fasted for one hour prior to Mass which means; no food or drink other than water or medicine. Chewing gum, eating mints or candy is always inappropriate in church and breaks the one hour fast. While on line to receive Holy Communion we should be preparing ourselves in a prayerful mode, not saying hello to others or talking. Once we are standing before the Priest, Deacon or Extraordinary Minister, they show the sacred host with the words; “The Body of Christ”. The only response is “Amen”. If receiving on the hand, both hands should be opened flat one above the other. When the host is placed on the open hand, the person receiving takes the hand below and takes the host from the hand above and consumes it BEFORE walking back to their seat. No one is ever permitted to take the host back to their seat or out of the church with them. If receiving on the tongue, once you say “Amen” simply stick your tongue out of your mouth. Not sticking your tongue out means the minister or Priest has to place their fingers into your mouth. In the light of the recent outbreak of the flu and coronavirus, it is suggested that everyone receive in their hand. Finally, if you are sick STAY HOME. It is NOT a sin to miss Mass. Mass is broadcast on several television channels and also livestreamed on the Cathedral’s website: stfranciscathedral.org, so the sick can make a “spiritual communion” until they return to good health. Sharing of ourselves is a mark of belonging to Christ, but that does not mean sharing illnesses.
Hopefully these reminders will help us all to approach our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament with the supreme reverence, respect and love that we owe Him.

Chrism Mass Monday, April 6, 2020,
4:00 PM Cathedral of St. Francis
of Assisi, Metuchen
On Monday, April 6, 2020, Bishop James F. Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass
with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless and consecrate the
Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing.
Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this custom – which we now call the Chrism Mass – in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils,
which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries!
The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their
Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head
of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his
ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches.
At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop
and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful
support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi
in Metuchen at 4:00 PM.
2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Stepping Forward in Faith:
Grace in Action
By now you have received a letter from Bishop Checchio inviting your participation in the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The diocesan ministries supported by the Appeal directly impact many of the parishioners here at Our Lady of Victories Church. Your gift provides formation opportunities for our catechists, youth and young adults. Among other important ministries, your sacrificial gift supports our renewed efforts in Evangelization and Communication. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportunity to do so next weekend, March 21/22, which has been designated as Bishop’s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal to help our parish reach its goal. If we can exceed our goal, 50% of the amount collected over goal will be returned to us in the form of a parish rebate. Just as important as our financial goal is our goal of reaching 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated. Thank you.
OUR PARISH GOAL IS $90,200
