Why Christmas? LUKE 2.1-12.

I do not know if you like advertisements on television or on billboards. I specialised in marketing in my business degree and I love them. I often have to try and explain the ideas and the imagery that the advertiser is trying to sell with his products to Janet. It causes endless laughter at times when Janet fails to see the image and ideas behind the ads. Recently on a poster I saw something quite amusing. It was a picture of a man and woman about to kiss and someone had drawn a speech bubble and written ‘I love girls.’ The problem was they misspelt girls and it said ‘I love grils.’ Someone else had written underneath ‘you mean girls.’ Someone else had written underneath that ‘That is all well and good, but what about us grils.’ At this point you are probably thinking what on earth has this got to do with Christmas Alan? I think that many people feel like that advertisement - It seems like all the world loves the girls and you are asking but what about us grils? There will be a couple who will wake up on Christmas morning and there will be no excited little voices at what Santa has brought - and it will feel like all the world loves the girls and they will ask but what about us grils? There will be someone who will waken on Christmas morn and turn over in an empty bed and remember with a searing pain in their heart that their life partner is no longer there and they will feel ‘All the world loves the girls and they will ask but what about us grils?’ There will be those who will spend the day alone, hungry, cold, fearful and sad and they will feel ‘all the world loves the girls and they will ask but what about us grils?’ Well if that is you read on because this letter is for you.

December  2013

If Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy to the world - why do so many people feel ‘All the world loves the girls and ask but what about us grils?’ Could it just be that we have lost the meaning of Christmas? Could it just be that we never really understood it in the first place? Could it be that we, those claiming to be Christian, fail to get the message of Christmas over? So Why Christmas?

LOVE We would all readily admit that Christmas is the time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Did you ever stop to ask yourself - Why did Jesus come?

I do not know if you have seen Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast - in the film there is a scene where the Beast is just about to confess his love for Belle. Cogsworth looks on - for if Belle pledges her love for the Beast then the spell will be broken and everything would be back to normal. Belle asks for permission to look into the magical mirror to see her father - she sees him in distress and in shock she drops the mirror and sobs ‘I have for to go to him.’ The Beast responds ‘go to him, then.’ Cogsworth comes in full of triumph - ‘It is all going swimmingly.’ All hope vanished into thin air when the Beast uttered the most significant line in the film. ‘I let her go!’ Cogsworth ‘You did what?’ You see to let her go meant that the kingdom of the Beast was once again plunged into darkness for another season. To let her go meant all hope of being human was gone. Why? The Beast in answer to that said ‘I had to let her go, I love her.’

In a far greater way, and at a higher cost that is exactly what God said the first Christmas - ‘I had to send Him, I love them?’ Can’t

Holy  Trinity  -‐  Woodburn   5

December  2013

you imagine the angels asking ‘Why send Jesus?’ ‘Why to those people?’ ‘Look at what they have done to your servants in the past?’ ‘Look at the way they are living?’ ‘Why send your Son?’ and God replies ‘I had to send Him, I love them.’ Is that not what Jesus said in John 3.16 - ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son...’ So the first reason for Christmas is because God loves us. So this morning if you feel like ‘All the world loves the girls and you are asking but what about us grils?’ Remember that fact - Because God loves you He sent His Son to be born in Bethlehem.

SIN I know what you are all thinking - how can sin possibly have anything to do with Christmas Alan? When I was a child I could never understand how Jesus was born at Christmas and died at Easter and grew up so quickly. That was because of my lack of understanding. But you know inside and outside the Church there are people whose understanding has not connected Christmas with Easter. One of the most effective and thought provoking Christmas cards I received last year had a newspaper headline on the front which said ‘Baby born to die.’ It really made me take notice of Why Christmas? ‘Baby born to die’ - that is exactly why He came. That is why the wise men brought oils to anoint Him - they were oils for death. Jesus was born to die - to die not because of anything He had done but because of our sins. When God sent His Son He sent Him to die. Jesus came and from the moment He was born His life was overshadowed by the spectre of the Cross. God required that a lamb be sacrificed to atone for sin - therefore it was

6   Holy  Trinity  -‐  Woodburn

December  2013

very appropriate that the Lamb of God who would take away all sin should be born in a stable and laid in a manger.

LIFE FOR ALL When Jesus was born the announcement of His birth was made to both the high and low, to the humble and the great, to the powerful and the underprivileged. Shepherds - dirty, smelly, ceremonially unclean shepherd are told by the angels that the Saviour is born. The lowly men of the society of the day are told of the birth of Jesus. I would say they felt like ‘all the world loved the girls and asked but what about us grils?’ Here God says ‘I love you grils.’ ‘I love you poor and lowly shepherds, I love you who no one else wants to be near.’ To the wise men, the rich and powerful, those of status and standing God calls them to come to the stable. They get it wrong at the start and go to the palace. I mean if a king is going to be anywhere he is going to be in the palace. We know that they are then guided to the stable and they bow down and worship the Saviour. So Jesus has come for the high and mighty, the rich and the poor, the lowly and humble - Why?

So that they might have life, life in all its fullness. But note this - both the poor and lowly shepherds and the high and mighty wise men had to come to Jesus. God had sent His Son into the world, He announced to each of these groups and they then had to come to Jesus and worship Him. They had to do something - they did not sit back and do nothing. You see today so many people sit back and do nothing about Jesus. God has sent His Son, they celebrate Christmas but they do nothing about Jesus. They do not come to

Holy  Trinity  -‐  Woodburn   7

December  2013

Him, they do not bow at His feet, they do not worship Him. For the Shepherds and the Wise Men life would never be the same again. Today you and I can meet this same Jesus and our lives will never be the same again.

So this Christmas - ‘if you feel all the world loves the girls remember God loves the grils - He sent His Son because He loves you, He was born to die for you - the question this morning is ‘Will you come to Him like the Shepherds and the Wise Men?’

Yours in Christ

Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight - 15th December at 6pm.

This year we will also be joined by Woodburn Primary School Choir. Please come along and enjoy this wonderful evening of carols and to hear again the message of Christmas from Scripture.

Rev Alan McCann

From The Treasurer

From Sunday 8th December you will be able to collect either your envelopes for 2014 or a letter ( as you donate by standing order) advising you of your FWO number.

As we come to the end of another year I can report that the variable building loan will be paid off in December and we now only owe £210,000 to the bank for the fixed loan.

I cannot stress enough that we must continue to give as we do now to the Building Fund to generate over £2200 per month to pay this loan. I would hope that you will continue to give as before and then we can focus on our general fund which we will have overspend on again.

Alison Allen, Joan Harvey, Fiona Moody Vera Saunderson, Libby Todd, Nicky Quigg,

Prayer Team: After the 10.30am service every Sunday a number of us will be available to pray with you at the front of the church. Please feel free to bring any situation for prayer. Your prayer requests will, as always, remain confidential, however should you feel that you would prefer to receive prayer in the privacy of the prayer room two of the team will be happy to move into there with you.

Additionally the Prayer Team continues to meet Thursdays at 7.30pm-7.45pm to pray through the request slips that have been placed in the box. Please continue to make use of the prayer request box and please feel free to add in a request slip for continued prayer, even if you have already come for prayer in person. As has always been the case the prayer request slips are lifted for one month after which time we ask that you complete a new slip should your situation require continued prayer or we need to be updated.

God Bless, Nicky Quigg

By popular demand…Groan Joke is back in time for Christmas

In Las Vegas, they gamble everywhere. I went into a drug store for an aspirin and the girl behind the counter said: ‘I’ll toss you, double or nothing.’ I lost. I came out with two headaches.

I saw a sign on a Scottish golf course once. It said: ‘Members will please refrain from picking up lost balls until they have stopped rolling!’

I said to the girl in the shop: ‘I want to buy a hat.’ She said: ‘Fedora?’ I said: ‘No, for myself!’

December  2013

I knew a hypochondriac who wouldn’t visit the Dead Sea until he found out what it died of!

He’s so tight-fisted, he’s got varicose veins in his knuckles.

She still plays the piano by ear .  .  . but sometimes her earrings get in the way.

This guy bought his wife a burial plot for her birthday. The following year, when he bought her nothing, she complained. He said: ‘What are you complaining about? You didn’t use the present I bought you last year!’

When I was a kid, I went to a psychiatrist for one of those aptitude tests. On the desk he put a pitchfork, a wrench, and a hammer and he said to the nurse: ‘If he grabs the pitchfork, he’ll become a farmer. If he grabs the wrench, he’ll be a mechanic, and if he takes the hammer, he’ll be a carpenter.’ I grabbed the nurse!

The town was so dull, one day the tide went out and it never came back.

This fellow walked into a bar with a chicken under one arm and a crocodile under the other. The barman said, ‘What’ll you have?’

He said: ‘A whisky and soda.’ Then the crocodile spoke up and said: ‘I’ll have a gin and tonic.’ The barman said: ‘That’s amazing. I’ve never seen a crocodile that could talk before.’ He said: ‘He can’t. The chicken’s a ventriloquist.’

People learn something new every day. Why, just today, my wife learned that a car won’t climb a telephone pole.

A leopard went to see a psychiatrist. He said: ‘Every time I look at my wife, I see spots before my eyes.’ The psychiatrist said: ‘That’s only natural.’ The leopard said: ‘But, doctor, she’s a zebra.’

Once I painted a girl in the nude and I almost froze to death.

I went to a fortuneteller and she looked at my hands. She said, 'Your future looks pretty black.' I said, 'Are you kidding? I've still got my gloves on!

Two cannibals were eating a clown – one said to the other, 'Does he taste funny to you?

Lets laugh together God bless
