The Church of Ireland College of Education offers a three-year undergraduate course leading to theDublin University degree of Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.), a professional degree which provides for theacademic and professional requirements of primary school teachers. The course covers content andteaching methodology in all subjects of the primary school curriculum. It also enables students toengage with the theoretical aspects of education including psychology, sociology, curriculum studies,philosophy and history. Teaching Practice and placement in schools is a core feature of the B.Ed. and isembedded in each year’s programme.

To be considered for admission to the College students must satisfy the entrance requirements of theCollege and the Department of Education and Skills. In addition to specified Leaving Certificate subjectrequirements, students must pass a suitability interview and medical examination. At present, allavailable places on the B.Ed. programme are reserved for those who are members of recognisedChurches in the Protestant tradition, and who are aware of and willing to support the distinctive ethosof Protestant primary schools.

The College also provides a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Support and SpecialEducational Needs which is open to all serving primary and post-primary teachers, as well as thoseworking in special schools and other recognised education services, including those who provideLearning Support, Resource Teaching and Resource Teaching for Travellers. A circular letter is availablefrom the Department of Education and Skills for each academic year which includes all relevantinformation and application forms. These can also be accessed from www.cice.ie in January/Februaryfor the following year’s entry.

The Master of Arts (Education) focuses on Learning Support/Special Educational Needs. The course isopen to graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Learning Support and Special Educational Needs orequivalent. The Course begins in January of each year. The College runs a one-year Certificate Course for Special Needs Assistants which is open to thosespecial needs assistants who have satisfactorily completed the relevant twenty-hour IntroductoryCourse for Special Needs Assistants delivered through the network of education centres. Applicantsmust be currently employed as special needs assistants in mainstream primary or post-primary schoolsor in special schools. Weekday ReadingsListing A is from the two-year programme which covers almost the whole Bible insemicontinuous reading over the two years. This may be used at either the Morning orEvening office. In the alternate year the New Testament readings are mostly from thegospels. This year they are mostly from the rest of the New Testament. In this way thewhole of the New Testament is read over two years. The greater part of the Old Testamentis also covered over the two years.

Listing B is from Revised Common Lectionary Daily Readings drawn up by the compilers ofthe Revised Common Lectionary and published in 2005. Readings for Thursday, Friday andSaturday help to prepare for the coming Sunday; those for Monday, Tuesday andWednesday reflect upon it.
