Marriage Moments: “For we do not know how to pray as we ought.” (Romans 8:26) Praying together is one of the most intimate (and scary) deeds a couple can do. Revealing our innermost thoughts and feelings can be a risk. Parenting Pointers: Solomon asked God for an understanding heart. Surely this is the attitude we want to take toward our own children. Yet children test us. They do dumb, crazy, and selfish things. They need to be corrected and disciplined. An understanding heart does not mean ignoring bad behavior but rather loving our child through it. (Susan Vogt....www.SusanVogt.net)

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. Tuesdays 12:45-3:15 p.m. (private, quiet time, incense free) with the chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome to spend time in Jesus’ awesome Eucharistic presence. Eucharistic Adoration (Benediction, rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy) is also available Thursdays with Father Terry from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

God, the gardener. Humanity is comprised of both good and evil which, like the wheat and weeds,

must grow together until the harvest. Just as the servants in today’s reading pointed out the bad seed, we too quickly judge the worth of others without considering God’s mercy. Our self-righteousness highlights other’s failings and blinds us to the fact that even on our best days “there remains an uprooted small corner of evil” in our own hearts. Take warning today! Leave the final judgment between good and evil to the Divine Gardener who will do the final sifting at His harvest. What we call wheat may well be weeds and visa-versa.

It’s no puzzle to Him. When we cannot piece together the puzzle of our own lives, remember the

best view of a puzzle is from above. (Amethyst Snow-Rivers)

CHILDREN, WE LIKE HAVING YOU HERE!!

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in Church. All are welcome! It matters that children learn that worship is what we do as a commuity of faith, that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship and presence matters, we teach them that they are enough, right here and right now, as members of Corpus Christi. It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even their badly (or perfectly timed depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means that they are present. Please know that your family - with all its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy - are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the Church of Corpus Christi. As Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.”

The Holy Father Speaks... During His Angelus address on Sunday to the pilgrims and tourists who braved the heat in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis recalled the Gospel reading of the day, the famous parable of the sower. The Pope explained that the sower is Jesus, but the parable itself, concerns us, as it speakes of the soil and not the sower. The Holy Father noted that Jesus performs, so to speak, a “spiritual radiography” of our heart, which is the ground upon which the seed of the Word falls. Our heart is like the soil, it can be good when the Word bears fruit, but it can also be hard, and waterproof. In between these forms of soil, there are two types of land. The first is a stony ground where the seed cannot put down deep roots. This is the superficial heart that welcomes the Lord, wants to pray, love and testify, but does not persevere. Then there is the thorny ground, full of rocks that suffocate the good plants. This form of soil was the world seduced by wealth and greed. The rocks were the vices that inhabit a person’s heart. With the Lord’s help, we can reclaim the land in the form of confession and prayer that removes the stones and thorns and purifies our hearts.

IT TAKES BOTH RAIN AND SUNSHINE TO MAKE A RAINBOW.

OPENING THE WORDHave you ever wondered how you might get more out of Sunday Mass? A key is reading and reflecting briefly on the scripture readings before coming to Mass. An easy way to do this is to listen to a short 4-5 minute reflection entitled “Opening the Word” on FORMED. A new reflection is posted each week for the Sunday scriptures.FORMED is a dynamic Catholic website that the Church of Corpus Christi has a subscription for. To sign in, go to www.formed.org and type in the parish code which can be obtained by calling the parish office or from flyers outside the parish office. You will need this code the first time you enter this site. After creating your own user name and password, you can then listen to the “Opening the Word” each week before coming to Sunday Mass. If you have questions about this or need help with registering on FORMED, please contact Cindy Anderst in the parish office by calling 255-4600.

Funeral Pre-PlanningThinking about pre-planning a funeral leaves most people a little uneasy. However, pre-planning can give you peace of mind as you will know you have helped your family at a very difficult time. It also allows an opportunity to express preferences at this time of a final good-bye. This removes the burden of family members having to guess about your wishes. Our Pastoral Care Associate, Cindy Anderst, is available with information and to answer any questions that you might have about this process. You can call her at the parish office at 255-4600. Pre-planning a funeral can be one of the last and greatest gifts you can give to your family.

Sunday, July 23, 2017 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary timeGet on board with God“We believe in God . . . the Almighty,” we pray at Mass every Sunday: We believe God to be all-powerful—to think anything less would mean God isn’t God. If we look at the world around us, though, we see bad things happening to just about everyone. Where is the Almighty in all that? The church’s answer has always been that “God grants his creatures . . . the dignity of acting on their own,” as the Catechism of the Catholic Church says. That dignity can go two ways: either working with God to help bring about the reign of God, or not. How can you show your cooperation?

Today’s readings: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19; Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-43 (106). “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the Kingdom.”

mOnday, July 24 memOrial Of Sharbel makhlŪf, prieStDon’t be a closet ChristianSaint Sharbel Makhlūf, the Hermit of Lebanon, dedicated himself to imitating Christ at an early age. He entered the Maronite monastery of St. Maro and was eventually granted permission to live as a hermit. Many sought his counsel over the years, but it wasn’t until his body was discovered incorrupt long after his death in 1898 that hundreds of miracles were attrib-uted to him. He became a sign to 20th-century Christians of the liberating power of simple living. We 21st-century Christians may not be prepared to reduce our possessions to a tunic and leaf-filled mattress, but we could begin to loosen the bonds of materialism by giving away the contents of a closet or two.

Today’s readings: Exodus 14:5-18; Matthew 12:38-42 (395). “The scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.’ ”

tueSday, July 25 feaSt Of JameS, apOStleName your faithJames has lots of nicknames. Besides “apostle,” he is “the Greater” to distinguish him from the other, younger apostle named James. He was “son of Zebedee,” which identified his fishing roots. He and his brother were the “sons of thunder,” reflecting a familial temper trait. He is also “the Martyr,” being the first apostle to suf-fer such a fate. The shrine in his name in Santiago de Compostela refers to his supposed missionary work in Spain. These names indi-cate that he was larger than life and multifaceted. What nickname would you want to be remembered by?

Today’s readings: 2 Corinthians 4:7-15; Matthew 20:20-28 (605). “She said, ‘Declare that these two sons of mine will sit at your right hand and your left in your Kingdom.’ ”

WedneSday, July 26 memOrial Of JOachim and anne, parentS Of the bleSSed Virgin mary Be a modelRemember when you first realized that you were becoming your mother? Or turning out to be just like your father? Kids do tend

to grow up to be like their parents. Just like Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne, were the good ground from which the seed of goodness grew, we can be the good soil from which our children spring and produce much fruit. So it might be better for us to invest our energy in self-control, rather than kid-control. The goal, remember, is not well-behaved kids but well-behaved adults.

Today’s readings: Exodus 16:1-5; 9-15; Matthew 13:1-9 (397). “Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

thurSday, July 27Be differentThe routine nature of daily life can cause our hearts to grow dull. And when we’re feeling dull, it’s hard to hear what God has to tell us. Yet it doesn’t take much to shake things up and get a new perspective. Just break out of a rou-tine and do something different—take a new route to work, rearrange your furniture, clean out a junk drawer, or call an old friend you’ve been thinking about. God often talks to us in

moments of surprise. So get out of your rut and you might even get a fresh message from God.

Today’s readings: Exodus 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b; Matthew 13:10-17 (398). “For this people’s heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing.”

friday, July 28Jesus is close at handWhere does God “live”? Where do you go to find God? Jesus de-clared he was the new temple, the new dwelling place of God in cre-ation. So wherever Jesus is, God is present, too. In his Body, which is the church, in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, in love of and service to others, and in countless other ways—in these places, God lives. Think of all the places you can encounter Jesus in your life, all the temples great and small where you feel the presence of God.

Today’s readings: Exodus 20:1-17; Matthew 13:18-23 (399). “But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

Saturday, July 29 memOrial Of marthaFriendliness is GodlinessEven the savior of the world needed a place where he could put his feet up and let his hair down. The home of Martha, her sister Mary, and their brother Lazarus was just such a place for Jesus. They were his good friends, people with whom he likely shared laughs and good times and perhaps on occasion a good cup of wine. When Lazarus died, Jesus without hesitation put his own life at risk by raising him. Friendship is fundamental to the spiritual life and to our well-being, yet too often we let friendships wither from neglect. Who counts you among their closest friends? If the list is short or nonexistent, it’s time to reassess your priorities.
