From the Staff-Parish Relations Committee Get to Know… Jim Bock

This is the fourth article in a “Get to know…” series of articles published by Mt. Sylvan’s Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The goal of these articles is to help Mt. Sylvan’s parishioners get to know our church staff and learn

more about their responsibilities and what they do for our church.

As the Business Administrator, Jim’s primary responsibilities are to oversee and manage financial transactions to carry out the ministry of the church. He is responsible for the accounts payable function, coordinates with our part-time, volunteer Financial Secretary, Naida Upchurch, concerning donations, along with managing banking activities and payroll services. Jim also maintains and prepares monthly finance statements for the Finance Committee and Administrative Council. Jim was hired as Mt. Sylvan's Business Administrator in May 2015 and has a degree – and years of experience – in Business Administration. He has worked at several large and small companies in the area, including Northgate Associates and Nortel Networks and has experience across a broad spectrum of financial and business operations. Jim continues to be blessed to have the opportunity to serve as Business

Administrator at Mt. Sylvan, refocusing his career to serve God in a support role, while still utilizing his strongest skills. He enjoys serving as part of the finance team and church staff and working with all the church members, committees and volunteers. A native of Durham, Jim has lived in northern Durham County for 30+ years. His wife, Kathy, a lifelong resident of Durham County, is a RN at Duke. They are members of Mt. Bethel UMC and have two sons, Alex and Adam, both in their mid-twenties. Alex is a HVAC service technician with Brown Brothers Plumbing and Heating and holds both residential and commercial HVAC licenses. He is an active sportsman and is learning the joys of home ownership, residing in Bahama with his two cats and several chickens. Adam, their youngest son, and his wife, Hope, both recently graduated with Masters of Divinity degrees from Duke University. Adam joined the full-time staff at Camp Chestnut Ridge, where he did field education and worked as a counselor and retreat staffer since 2015. Hope will be a pastor at Fuquay-Varina UMC. She and Adam hope to remain living in Durham. In his spare time, Jim continues to serve in several leadership and team member roles in the community. Currently he is a choir member and Finance Chair at Mt Bethel. He leads the Citizenship and Patriotism committee at the Bahama Ruritan Club. He and Kathy enjoy hiking the Eno, its tributaries, state and national parks and traveling near and far, especially the Old North State!

Walk to Emmaus—Do you feel like your spiritual life could use a jumpstart? The Walk to Emmaus is a caring fellowship of Christians committed to the tangible expression of Jesus Christ’s agape love and the support and development of Christian disciples in our Church. The spiritual retreat is three-days filled with praise, worship, testimony, and Christian fellowship. The FALL 2019 Men’s Walk is Sept 19 thru 22; and Women’s Walk is Oct. 10 thru 13, 2019. There still is space available. Don’t miss out on this wonderful worship experience! For more information and applications, contact Jim or Phyllis Polhamus, at [email protected] / H: 919-479-2021

Blood Drive June 16 9:30am - 2pm In the Mt. Sylvan Fellowship Hall After the recent explosion in downtown Durham, the Red Cross sent 205 units of blood to Duke Hospital to treat victims of the blast. This is an indicator of how much our donations are needed in our community. We are already in a season of severe blood shortage. This Fathers Day give the gift of life to save a father, mother, son, or daughter with your a blood donation. Search for Mt Sylvan in the find a drive section of redcross.com to schedule your appointment to donate. If you need assistance with scheduling your appointment call Sophia in the church office at 919-471-0032. If you cannot donate blood that day but would still like to help, please come at 2:15 pm to help clean up. If you can help, please contact Sophia in the church office [email protected].

New first aid kit and glucometer have been placed in the Mt. Sylvan Parlor Kitchen on top of the refrigerator, in case of emergency.

From Beverly Bizzell Mt. Sylvan,

My family and I would like to express our deepest appreciation for the many ways your love and support was shown to us with the recent passing of my mom, Valerie Bizzell. At what was such a difficult time of planning for her service and visitation, you were there to help guide us and provide for our many needs. Having attended both Sunday services as well as their Sunday School Class on many occasions over the years, I personally know how blessed both mom and dad (Harold) were to have such a warm and caring church family. Prior to their health declining, they were faithful to participate and loved being involved there as much as possible. You also were faithful by remembering them with your cards, visits and calls when later they were unable to attend services. May God continue to bless each of you and the ministry of Mt. Sylvan in the days to come.

In Christian Love and Friendship, Beverly Bizzell

Kinder Garden

From the Mt Sylvan Garden Shed - Where Do We Go From Here? Hello all. Over the past two months we have looked back at our garden start up and talked about the garden today, but where do we want to go from here? The primary mission of the garden is to meet in fellowship with each other and with the community, and this continues to be our main objective. We also want to increase the amount and diversity of what we produce in order to further spread the Mt Sylvan hospitality.

We would love to have more hands-on workers in the garden, so help us recruit new gardeners! We welcome your family, friends, neighbors, students needing community service credits, master gardeners in need of hours, new folks to the area, and anyone else who would like to be a part of this wonderful experience. If you can not be out in the garden with us, we have many supportive activities such as delivering produce, purchasing needed items, giving financial support, and many other helpful activities. We also are making constant changes to the physical garden to make it more productive. We hope to add new raised beds each year (which are easier to work with fewer hands), we are continuing to upgrade our storage areas, and we hope to add a better watering system.

On Sunday, June 30 we will celebrate 10 years of the Mt. Sylvan Community Garden.

Special Thanks this month goes to Bill Pinkerton, our friendly flower delivery person, and to Walter Young for his handiwork in rehabbing our tool storage areas.

The Summer Kinder Garden Program

We are PLANTING SEEDS AND GROWING in the Kinder Garden this summer. We are learning the Garden BEE Attitudes, memorizing scripture, and enjoying God's creation as we tend and grow our

very own garden. Check out the "Latest Buzz" with weekly updates and slide show of our weekly experiences on the Kinder Garden website at

http://www.mtsylvanumckindergarden.com/ as well as the church Facebook page each Thursday.
