Trinity UCC Family,

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

For the past several years, our church has been in the midst of a renewal, as we have been engaged in a variety of major repairs and improvements. Our Raise the Roof Capital Campaign (RTR) has allowed us to update much of our church infrastructure – from our roof to ceilings, from lighting to plumbing – all while holding to our promise to be good stewards of God’s gifts to us. Many of our repairs and upgrades were critical to maintaining a safe and healthy church:

• Roof repairs and installation of a green reflective roof• Installation of new air conditioners, boilers, air handling, and

thermostat control system• Rain gardens on the 95th Street side of church• Replacement of lighting fixtures and conversion to LED

lighting• High efficiency toilets and plumbing/drain updates• Electronic Key Access

Other repairs and updates were for the general upkeep of the church and improving the experience of our members, while still operating within our call to be good stewards:

• New flooring in our Fellowship Hall and Atrium, along with a new room divider

• Replacement of ceiling tiles throughout the church• Installation of acoustic tiles in the Sanctuary to enhance

sound reproduction• New cement work on both the east and west entrances• An outdoor patio on the east side of the building• Cleaning of outside brick work and repair of rusting window

and door frames• Bathroom renovations• Installation of a new welcome center in the Narthex• Replacement of the carpet in the Narthex• New floors, cabinetry, and sinks in our Boardroom and Staff

dining room

With all that we have done, there are a few items that we were not able to address with our RTR gifts that are still in need of attention; two items are absolutely urgent:

Page 15: CHURCH DIRECTORY - TUCC · Still photography, videography and audio recording of our worship services, ministry programs and community services is prohibited on church property, without

• West Driveway Sewer Line – Just as water from a leaky roof will destroy a building, rusting out steel infrastructure, weakening ceilings and walls, warping wood, etc., the sewer line in the west driveway, if not repaired, could threaten the very foundation of our church. Because the sewer line is on our property, it is our responsibility, rather than the responsibility of the city of Chicago.

• Sanctuary Sound Equipment – Much of the equipment that supports our worship services – sound enhancement for our Sanctuary, video recordings of our worship, and broadcasting our worship services around the world – has reached an age where repairs are no longer possible. Recently, we sent an amplifier out for repair and it was returned because parts are no longer available. This puts us into a position where on some Sunday in the future we could have a catastrophic failure that would snatch our worship off the air or even cause us to completely lose sound in the Sanctuary. We can no longer wait to make these upgrades.

• Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Chapel Repair – In recent years, there have been a series of sewer backups from the men’s restroom that leaked into our Chapel. While we have made extensive efforts on multiple occasions to both repair the cause of the flooding and to clean and sanitize the Chapel, we are now in the process of modernizing the Chapel to meet its original objective, while increasing its flexibility so that it can be used as a multi-purpose space. We are removing the pews and replacing them with a seating system that can be configured in a variety of layouts.

• Theater Lighting – We are currently operating with about 30% of our lighting capacity.

• Sanctuary Video Equipment – Most of our cameras were placed into service before mobile phones even had cameras. Both of our cameras and video mixing equipment are no longer supported for repairs, or the cost of repairs would exceed the cost of new equipment.

• Sanctuary Screen and Flat Screen Placements – We have utilized screens in the Sanctuary during Maafa worship services each year, and when those rented screens are removed, many members approach us with ideas on how to make them permanent. This is our opportunity to make this enhancement a permanent part of our worship experience.

Page 16: CHURCH DIRECTORY - TUCC · Still photography, videography and audio recording of our worship services, ministry programs and community services is prohibited on church property, without

Over 1,450 members and families of our congregation made pledges to the Raise The Roof Campaign, with a total commitment of $5.1 million. (These numbers have fluctuated a bit from the start of the program until now, as families have reduced their commitments and/or left the church.) Those families/members have thus far made gifts of just over $3 million! In addition, many members and guests did not actually make pledges, but they made gifts to RTR totaling $1 million, making total gifts to RTR about $4 million.

Our actual spending on RTR projects is about $6.4 million, leaving $2.4 million that the church has had to cover with either cash flow or financing.

Your church is extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed in any way or amount toward this major project! Of course, based on the needs identified above, there is still some work to be done. As with all giving at Trinity UCC, we ask for equal sacrifice, not equal giving. In order to fund the remaining projects, we are setting a goal of $600,000 to be raised in a focused effort between today, Elders Sunday, and Anniversary Sunday, December 2nd.

Over the next 10 Sundays, we are asking members who are able, to give an extra $50 a week (total of $500) to complete these last critical projects. In addition, we are asking our young members (25 and under) to give an additional $5 a week, for a total of $50, over the next few weeks.

If just 1,200 of our families/members achieve the $500 goal, that will cover our overall goal of $600,000. This represents just about 20% of our membership.

When we think about the historical financial challenges our church has faced – members literally put their homes up as collateral to finish this building – and the over $2 million dollars that remains of our original campaign pledges, we cannot help but be confident that we will meet the challenge before us. Our Raise The Roof campaign has done a great job; you have done a great job, as we have rebuilt all of the core systems within Trinity UCC and installed enhancements all around the church. With our 2018 Church Anniversary Gifts we will be able to REFRESH THE REST!

$600K by 12/2/2018!

2018 CHURCHWIDE THEMESEPTEMBERActs 2:1-4 (NIV)

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
