My hoPe iS BUiLT on noThinG LeSS

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain: On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

When Darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale,

my anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood supports me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way,

he then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found!

Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne!

(Refrain)

Unison Scriptures 11:00 a.m.MARk 5:21-24, 35-43 (MSG)21-24After Jesus crossed over by boat, a large crowd met him at the seaside. One of the meeting-place leaders named Jairus came. When he saw Jesus, he fell to his knees, beside himself as he begged, “My dear daughter is at death’s door. Come and lay hands on her so she will get well and live.” Jesus went with him, the whole crowd tagging along, pushing and jostling him.

35While he was still talking, some people came from the leader’s house and told him, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?” 36Jesus overheard what they were talking about and said to the leader, “Don’t listen to them; just trust me.” 37-40He permitted no one to go in with him except Peter, James, and John. They entered the leader’s house and pushed their way through the gossips looking for a story and neighbors bringing in casseroles. Jesus was abrupt: “Why all this busybody grief and gossip? This child isn’t dead; she’s sleeping.” Provoked to sarcasm, they told him he didn’t know what he was talking about. 40-

43But when he had sent them all out, he took the child’s father and mother, along with his companions, and entered the child’s room. He clasped the girl’s hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, get up.” At that, she was up and walking around! This girl was twelve years of age. They, of course, were all beside themselves with joy. He gave them strict orders that no one was to know what had taken place in that room. Then he said, “Give her something to eat.”

7:30 a.m.

MARk 5:21-24, 35-43 (niV)21When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36Overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” 37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

“Is God calling you? The quick answer to that question is “Yes.” God is calling you God is calling each one of us to be [co-creators] and to live out our lives as a thankful response to God’s grace and [mercy towards us].

What are the desires that have lead you toward discerning a call to ministry and how were those desires planted and nurtured? Has someone in your church recognized you gifts and graces for ministry? Perhaps you found yourself in a situation where you were called upon to listen and to give deeply to a brother or sister in need, and you found yourself not only able to do so but filled with joy at being able to do so. Or perhaps you love Scripture and find yourself [passionate about sharing the word with others]. Calls don’t always happen at once. Perhaps you can think of several moments or events in your past that have led you to this present moment of discernment.

God doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all view of ministry…ministry takes many forms: some ordained, some not. But there are at least two elements common to all thriving ministry.

1. Some combination of commitments, capacities, and talents for leading and inspiring others to service for God. You may not discover your own gifts and graces until you’re actually involved in formal preparation for ministry.

2. Discovering and measuring your own commitments, capacities, and talents. Have you discerned aptitudes in yourself, and have others confirmed them for you?

The second element common to all thriving ministry is, as I have already said, a deep and profound desire to serve, a desire to be of use to God. Examine your own heart: have you been filled with such desire?”

-excerpts from “Discerning a Call to Ministry” by Susan R. Garrett (Futures, December 2005)

The discernment process should lead you to your next steps regarding your call.

Discerning a CallTrinity United Church of ChristSunday, november 15, 2015

Christian schools (teaching, counselors, chaplains, administrators, etc.)8. Mission work9. Spiritual direction10. Justice work (activism, community organizing, relief work, etc.)

november is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes affects 9.3% of the United States population, but 13% of African Americans 20 years and older have Type 2 Diabetes. However, in Chicago, over 18% of African Americans are affected.

What is Type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body uses sugar (glucose), your body’s main source of energy. With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are obesity, older age, family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant), and lack of physical activity.

Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, amputations, hearing loss and gum disease. it is important to recognize that in most cases these complications are PReVenTABLe

In alignment with the vision of the church, adopting healthier lifestyles including increasing physical activity and losing about 7% of your current weight by eating a healthier diet, could prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes and its complications.

if you have diabetes make sure you have a great worship experience by:

• Checking your blood sugars prior to coming to church and bringing your glucose testing monitor and equipment with you to church.

• eating a healthy and well balanced meal prior to coming to church.

• Taking your prescribed medicines with your morning meal prior to coming to church; bring glucose tablets or a small snack with you to avoid low blood sugars.

• if you feel light-headed, dizzy, jittery, or extremely warm and sweaty while praising; sit down, take some deep breaths and have your neighbor notify the church ushers.

We invite you to come to Immabasi’s Diabetes Support Group held every 3rd Monday of the month from12-2pm at the Village Center.

AnnouncementsRev. oM3 recommends…

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

The poetic, prophetic power of Coates’ essay is reminiscent of James Baldwin and brings to mind the biting critique of Harold Cruz. No other contemporary writer speaks with the raw honesty and beauty of modern Black life lie Coates. This short essay is a riveting personal letter to Coates’ teenage son penned in the wake of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. I encourage all Trinitarians to read and wrestle with this beautiful and brutal book.

Negroland by Margo Jefferson

Margo Jefferson, a native of Chicago and Pulitizer prize-winning author of cultural criticism, has created a stunning memoir of life in “The Third Race” – the upper crust of Black middleclass life in Chicago. This is not a romantic mythologized memoir designed to valorize all things bourgeois, but a powerful, elegant, and clear-eyed view of the dangers and moments of nobility of this area of Black life Jefferson calls Negroland. If you are interested in learning more about life in the 50’s, 60’s, and early 70’s in Chicago and especially for middleclass, upper crust Chicago, Negroland is the book for you.

I would call it a companion piece to Isabela Wilkerson’s stunning book, The Warmth of Other Suns – probably the best literary presentation of the Great Migration written in the last 20 years.
