Put on your very best polka dots: Hat, skirt, scarf, dress. Prizes for the most polka dots! America's love affair with the polkadot began, perhaps, in 1926, when Miss America was photographed in a polka dot swimsuit. Shortly after, in 1928, Disneyintroduced its cartoon darling Minnie Mouse wearing a red polka dot dress and matching bow. Throughout the 1930s, polkadot dresses appeared in stores, the fabric suddenly subversive, nipped in by ribbons and accentuated with bows. In 1940, the woozymelody of Frank Sinatra’s ballad “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” captured the height of America’s polka dot mania—that spring, theLos Angeles Times assured its readers, “You can sign your fashion life away on the polka-dotted line, and you'll never regret it” In1951, Monroe was famously photographed wearing a polka dot bikini. Nine years later, the release of Brian Hyland’s hit song,“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” brought polka dots back into vogue. Throughout the ‘60s, the artist–and walk-ing medley of polka dots–Yayoi Kusama became known for the busy dotted swarms that covered her paintings. “Our earth is onlyone polka dot among millions of others,” she once said. But then came the polka, the dance so popular that mid-19th century Eu-rope came up with the word “polkamania” to describe its own excitement. The word “polka” itself derives from the Polish for “Pol-ish woman”—in Czech, it translates to “little woman or girl.” Polka dots are inherently diminutive, automatically feminine. Today,

when we wear them, we inherittheir complicated legacy fromthe women that have wornthem before us—women whohave negotiated the shiftingrealm of trying to rock a dotand be taken seriously at thesame time. As Elle Woods' col-lege counselor famously said,"Harvard won't be impressedthat you aced History of PolkaDots."

Our spotlight shines brightlyfor July on the co-chair of theLibrary Committee EdithStocks, who along with co-chairBobbie Bronson, together for thepast three years has modernized andrefurbished our library, introducingcomputer system and urging all res-idents, who use the library to returnbooks, when due. When new resi-dents and visitors are getting theirfirst view of Sandhill Cove Clubhouse, they are shown ourlibrary, which is one of our premiere attractions.Edith was born in Brooklyn, New York and shortly, there-after, moved with her family to Ridgewood New Jersey. She has one younger sister living in Delaware. Edith grad-uated from Ridgewood High School and attended WellsCollege, in Aurora New York. Her father, a native ofMaine, had graduated from Colby College in WatervilleMaine and was happy, when she transferred there, whereshe received her BA degree in Psychology and Sociology. After graduation, Edith moved to New York City and workedfor C.V. Starr Insurance Company. She met her husband ona blind date. He had Immigrated from Germany after WorldWar II and was working in New Jersey in his uncle’s busi-ness. After their first year of marriage, they took a leave ofabsence from their jobs and sailed for Germany, where theyvisited Conrad’s family for three months. In 1958, Edith’s parents had moved to Winter Park,Florida. Conrad and Edith with their two sons Bill and Dandecided, to move to Florida, where Conrad opened his ownbusiness in Orlando. Edith met a lady at a local church, who was starting a class for special needs children. Theclass operating in this church building was eventually rec-ognized by the Orange County Board of education, whomoved it to an abandoned school building, where it even-tually evolved into three classes, as more and more spe-cial needs children were discovered.

In 1968, for business reason, Conrad and Edith moved toPalm City. Edith joined the Martin County Association forRetarded Children, which had decided to open a class forspecial needs children in a local church building. Volunteer

teachers where found and Edith acted as liaison for theschool, finding teachers and special needs children for theprogram. So many children were found and eventually therewere two more schools in Port Salerno and Indiantown. Edith later moved to Sandhill Cove and recruited volun-teers for a very special program which teaches our em-ployees to read and learn the English language. We aretruly blessed to have such gifted volunteers such as Ediththat give so much of their time and talent to our lovelycommunity.
