Put on your very best polka dots:Hat, skirt, scarf, dress, etc. Prizeswill be awarded for the mostpolka dots!America's love affair with the polkadot began, perhaps, in 1926, whenMiss America was photographed in apolka dot swimsuit. Shortly after, in1928, Disney introduced its cartoondarling Minnie Mouse wearing a redpolka dot dress and matching bow.Throughout the 1930s, polka dotdresses appeared in stores, the fabricsuddenly subversive, nipped in by rib-bons and accentuated with bows. In1940, the woozy melody of FrankSinatra’s ballad “Polka Dots andMoonbeams” captured the height ofAmerica’s polka dot mania—thatspring, the Los Angeles Times assuredits readers, “You can sign your fashionlife away on the polka-dotted line, andyou'll never regret it.” In 1951, Mon-roe was famously photographed wear-ing a polka dot bikini. Nine years later, the release of Brian Hyland’s hit song,“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie YellowPolka Dot Bikini,” brought polka dotsback into vogue. Throughout the ‘60s,the artist–and walking medley of polkadots–Yayoi Kusama became knownfor the busy dotted swarms that cov-ered her paintings. “Our earth is onlyone polka dot among millions of oth-ers,” she once said. But then came the polka, the dance sopopular that mid-19th century Europecame up with the word “polkamania”to describe its own excitement. The word “polka” itself derives fromthe Polish for “Polish woman”—inCzech, it translates to “little woman orgirl.” Polka dots are inherently diminu-tive, automatically feminine. Today, when we wear them, we inherit theircomplicated legacy from the womenthat have worn them before us—women who have negotiated the shift-ing realm of trying to rock a dot and betaken seriously at the same time.As Elle Woods' college counselor fa-mously said, "Harvard won't be im-pressed that you aced History of PolkaDots."

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4IS POLKA DOT DAY!!! Awonderful evening of music and entertainment will be held in thePavilion, Cove and poolside on Thursday, April 26. The festivi-ties will begin at 5:00 p.m. with tropical drinks and tasty delights.

A delicious buffet will be offered by our Culinary Department with openseating that evening. Dress attire will be tropical and casual. The CoveBistro will be open for breakfast and lunch and will be closed at 2:00 p.m. in order to prepare for the event. If you plan on attending the pleasesign up at the Hostess Desk.

    CARIBBEAN NIGHT

  • Sandhill CoveApril 2018

When I visited the Philipbars inWaterside, I witnessed a bondthat I have seen many times atSandhill Cove. People who have losttheir spouses find each other and join to-gether to enjoy their “golden years”. Car-rie and Bill met years ago at Piper’sLanding and after the deaths of June Roseand Dick Kinzer found happiness andcompatibility playing golf, visiting herhome in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee, and hissummer home in South Hampton, traveling to China, attend-ing the Czar’s New Year’s Eve Ball in Russia, renting an apart-ment in Paris, getting married and eventually moving toSandhill Cove Carrie grew up in Shorewood WS, a suburb of Milwaukee, where her father was editor and columnist for the MilwaukeeJournal and a popular raconteur on the paper’s radio station,WTMJ. In her memoir, Men, Music and Mirth, Carrie de-scribes vacations in Hollywood. While her father worked onscripts, she and her sister watched movies being filmed androde horses around the lots with Margaret O”Brian, PeggyAnn Garner and others. At a very young age Carrie was drawn to the baby-grand pianoin the family’s living room. She started taking lessons and afterfew years was accepted by Florence Bettray Kelly, Paul White-man’s soloist and Liberace’s teacher with whom she studieduntil she entered Northwestern University. After all the yearsof practice, performances and competitions, she put music asidetemporarily, but that same piano occupies a prominent place intheir apartment today. During her senior year, she appearedevery weekend and for many years after on a TV show, “It’s aDraw” where she was one of three panelists, others being vis-iting celebrities such as Betty White and Vincent Price. After graduation Carrie briefly taught high school Civics, mar-ried, had two children and eventually went back to law schoolwhere she was editor of “Law Review”. She was admitted tothe Wisconsin Bar in 1969. In retirement, she has spent many hours as a volunteer on theMartin County Library Foundation board, the Atlantic Clas-sical Orchestra and as a founding member of the Center forConstitutional Values. This organization works closely withMartin County Schools and awards scholarships to studentswho demonstrate knowledge of the United States Constitutionand American History. She is currently a nominee for thisyear’s prestigious Sage Award given by the Martin CountyCouncil on Aging. This award is given to a county citizen whoembodies the best of their senior years. Her favorite activityis duplicate bridge and she is a Silver Life Master. Her book,The Winters’ Tale, published in 2011, was launched at TheMount, Edith Wharton’s home in Lenox MA and can be foundin our SHC library.Bill was born on Long Island, attended South Side HighSchool where he doubled up his courses so he could graduatein three years and enlist in the army. After six months of spe-

cial training, he was sent to Belgium where he interrogatedGerman prisoners. When Germany surrendered, he wasshipped to Japan arriving just before the war ended. Four yearslater, he received his Masters Degree in chemical engineeringfrom Cornell and was hired by Exxon. Bill then attended nightschool at Rutgers for his Masters Degree in Business. After tenyears he became president of a hazardous waste company inDelaware. Bill remembers vividly when a hazmat dumpcaught fire and he remained in his office for three days andnights managing its extinction. After he retired, he continuedconsulting for a variety of companies, bought a winter home inPiper’s Landing and spent summers in South Hampton. Billand Carrie have been married for sixteen years.
