Little Reese Dettmer is only six years old, but she already has a flourishing modelling career. A pupil at

The memory of November 2005 is still etched deep in memory. The drive to the stone church in Rondebosch through the pelting rain was

with a heavy heart. I was on my way to the funeral of talented musician Carly Phillips. She had just missed graduating in computer science and was a month away from her 21st birthday. She was a principled, ethical and moral person who had a determined and thinking mind unencumbered by peer pressure. She loved mathematics, computers and even engineering but it was music that really took prime position in her life. Her tastes in music ranged from Chopin on the classical side to the Smashing Pumpkins and Tool, and as bassist of The Sleepers the band gave her fans much joy.The friends and family who were at her funeral were testament to the impact she had on each of their lives. It was, however, her valiant fight with leukemia that remains with me as a tribute to her strength of character and humility. She had two and a half months of debilitating pain before she was hospitalised with leukemia. All these years later my heart still goes out to the parents and to all parents who have lost a child to leukemia. If you want to assist those struggling with this disease, I encourage you to support The Sunflower Fund. This month Premier Helen Zille endorsed the work of The Sunflower Fund and announced that she has accepted the request to become a Patron. She will be assisting the organisation in raising the public’s awareness on how to become a bone-marrow stem-cell donor.

“I’m delighted to be a Patron of The Sunflower Fund as I fully support their incredible initiatives to increase the South African Bone Marrow Registry to help save the lives of leukaemia sufferers in South Africa. I will definitely be wearing my bandana on October 12, National Bandana Day, and I encourage all South Africans to do the same,” said Premier Helen Zille. In the run-up to Bandana Day look out for The Sunflower Fund’s TV advertisement which has just been released on DTSV, ETV and Cinemark. Conceptualised by Jupiter Drawing Room, it’ll make you rethink the small stuff we sweat every day. Directed by the agency’s top director, who himself has had a bone marrow transplant, the advertisement has been inspired by and features children from the Sunflower Ward at Mediclinic Constantiaberg and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Also mark September 17 in your diary, 11 to 3pm, when the V&A Waterfront’s amphitheatre will be the arena for great music and live entertainment all in aid of Bandana Day. The next day there will also be a 5km Fun Run at the Mouille Point promenade. The race starts at 11am and the cost is R50. You can register on the day.Don’t forget to buy your bandana for only R20 from your nearest Pick n Pay, BP Express or Round Table nationwide and to wear it on National Bandana Day, October 12.

Those of us who live in various parts of the Cape Peninsula are fortunate in having so many interesting

and attractive local walking and hiking trails. One such area is that of Orange Kloof which is now part of the Table Mountain National Park. Entry is from the Constantia Nek parking area. It was interesting to go back in time and record how the land was used until it became part of a conservation area. Orange Kloof land was explored shortly after the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck in 1652. There was a desperate need for wood and, once the search had led to the Hout Bay valley, trees were cut down at an alarming rate. Why was it named Orange Kloof? I would suggest that it was named after the Dutch Prince of Orange. It has also been suggested that it was so named because of the colour of the rocks of Orange Face. After the second British Occupation became fact in 1806, the history of Orange Kloof changed. It became perpetual quitrent land. William Munro was granted 490 morgen called Orange Kloof. The fact that the land was already known by this name in the early 1800s suggests that it was not a new one. So it could reasonably be considered as dating back to the time of the Prince of Orange. Munro was a Lieutenant in the

98th Highlanders (1798-1803), and between 1798 and 1803 a lieutenant in the 91st Highlanders. It was from governor Cradock that he received the land which he held until 1833.Solomon Johannes van Helsdingen was the next owner. After his death in 1864 his wife Elizabeth Aletta Louw tried to farm the land but she went insolvent. Manuel Almeyda became the new owner and was followed by the Stephan Brothers in 1887. Six months after this Orange Kloof became the property of the Municipality of Wynberg - an independent Municipality between 1886 and 1927, which transferred a little over five morgen to the Municipality of Cape Town in 1895.In 1931 the homestead and outbuildings were renovated and the ground fenced. Then a decision was taken to rent the property in an attempt to recoup expenses. The lease presumed that the rentor was financially stable. Instead failure resulted. In 1957 the remainder of the Orange Kloof land was transferred to the Cape Town Municipality and was managed by their Parks and Forest Branch. Finally it became part of the Cape Peninsula National Park and now is part of the Table Mountain National Park. Constantia’s popular Alphen greenbelt trail has been upgraded and enhanced thanks to the dedication of the Friends of the Constantia Valley Greenbelts (FOCVG) teamwork, City Parks, the Constantia Valley Property Owners Association and Council. Pleasant changes can be seen on the Constantia Meadow area. The path leading to the walk has been hard surfaced, so that walkers and wheelchair users don’t have to wade in water, mud and dust in summer. The ugly old water tank which was covered in graffiti, has been demolished, and two brand-new bridges have been built over the river, so walkers can access both sides of the river without getting their feet wet.

The river is no longer a matted tangle of greenery, and the overgrown bushes and bamboo have been removed. At the picnic, held to celebrate the upgrade, outgoing chairman James Forsyth introduced James Rawlings the new chairman. Jean Raubenheimer of the FOCVG, said that the trail is now a much safer place to walk thanks to the clean-up of the river banks. The group is working with Constantia crime watch to install infrared cameras to monitor movement on the greenbelts. Maps with contact points and phone numbers to report suspicious activity are almost complete. The FOCVG falls under the Wildlife Environmental Society, which protects and promotes the green recreational heritage of the Constantia Valley. The group liaises with the authorities and keeps a watchful eye on the riverine network running through the valley. River monitors report water pollution, litter, alien growth, and plant indigenous trees and shrubs. The FOCVG is keen to get more people involved. Contact 021 794 4841, or email [email protected].

Despite the odd cold snap, Spring is just around the corner. For gardeners, it is always the right time to get potting! Summer seed, flowers, vegetables and summer bulbs are begging to be planted.

LAWNS: Grass needs a very short cut during August. If you intend re-seeding now is the time to do it. Dress the lawn with 2:3:4, sow the seed evenly, and top-dress lightly with lawn dressing. Water well - rain would be good - but be sure the surface is kept damp daily, until it is well grown. Healthy existing lawns need a low cut. From September, fertilize six times weekly with 2:3:4 fertilizer and raise the level of cutting, one notch each time, until 5 to 8cm is reached by November.IRRIGATION: This is a good time to check all the pipes and heads taps. Clean nozzles out and have a trial run. Make sure water is reaching everywhere.ROSES: These will be shooting well by now, and need a good layer of compost and mulch. This is the ideal time to water in Koinor to prevent all sucking insects. Water the roses well, mix and water on the Koinor. Re-water the roses if rain isn’t imminent. August is the only month to lightly dig

around the roses.FLOWER BEDS: All flower beds will benefit from a generous layer of compost spread with Superphosphate (100g per sq.metre) or a manure product, lightly turned in. Bonemeal helps root growth when planting. Better to use 3:1:5 fertilizer later, or a manure product to nourish flowers from mid-September.

Wheelbarrows and new tools and gloves for children’s little hands, are available at the nursery.

Peter Merrington, a local historian, recently launched his latest novel “The Zombie and the Moon – more

stories from the shaman’s record” at Kalk Bay Books. He is currently writing a book on the cultural ethos of South Africa in 1910, the moment of Union. Peter spent over a decade visiting archives in the UK, Egypt, USA and South Africa, gathering material on a woman who was known in 1910 as a South African nation-builder. Dorothea Fairbridge was a pioneer in the documentation of Cape history and conservation of public heritage, including essays she wrote on the farmsteads of the Constantia Valley. She is a central presence in Peter’s forthcoming book which is based on his doctoral thesis, but he says a lot of the archival material will also go into his fiction writing. Peter’s inspiration to write about the remarkable Dorothea was so strong that he resigned from the English Department

at the University of the Western Cape in order to focus on writing and research. However, he also has a more whimsical side to his nature and this month, Peter launched his new novel, “The Zombie and the Moon – more tales from the shaman’s record”, at Kalk Bay Books. This is the first sequel to his collection of stories, “Zebra Crossings – tales from the shaman’s record”. (Both books are published by Jacana and available at Exclusive Books). Why is he writing about zebras and zombies and who is the shaman and what is his record? Peter is evasive about the real meaning behind the titles and jokes: “Perhaps there’s something in the water! There is a carnival blend in these shamanic stories of local reality and astral travel, which starts to make some sense. You’ll have to read the books to find out.”As a writer, fostering the imagination is a must, says Peter. “Imagination is a total package, it’s the way we respond to life at every level. As a heritage worker (I am a founder member of Heritage Western Cape) I want to honour the sense of story that is everywhere – ‘every person, place and thing is a starting point’. This is the shaman’s record – or what some people call the ‘akashic record’, archaeological layers, ancestral voices, or – what the Methodist teachings refer to as: ‘the great cloud of witness’. ”The humanities and the arts are mostly under-funded in this country, so Peter considers he was very fortunate to get a year-long fellowship at GIPCA, UCT’s recently-established Gordon Institute for the Creative and Performing Arts. This enabled him to write “The Zombie and the Moon”. “The next sequel in the Shaman’s Record will focus on ecology and in particular on woods and trees, and the central myth of the World Tree (Yggdrasil, in Norse mythology),” said Peter. He also co-facilitated three of the annual ‘Caine Prize for African Writers’ workshops at Monkey Valley, where

prizewinners worked on new material. The workshops were attended by local authors such as Henrietta Rose-Innes, Ken Barris, Allan Kolski Horwitz, and rising stars from around the continent – Binyavanga Wainaina, Helon Habila and Ada Udechukwu, among others. In Peter’s opinion: “A new Africa needs active and sympathetic imagination, vision and creativity. Honouring the past and moving on, honouring the environment and each other, embracing newness and holding leaders to account. Each one must use their imagination for healing, reconciling and building. If we fall asleep we will lose out to the zombies.”

CLASSIC MOTORCYCLESWriting is just one of Peter’s many interests. He is also a life member of the Classic Motorcycle Club, Cape, and was awarded the Kevin Duncan Trophy for ‘Motorcyclist of the Year’ in 2004 after a 15000km tour through the USA on a Honda CB550 and 5000km on his 30-year-old BMW, up through the Caprivi to Livingstone and back. It’s no surprise that his protagonist, the eclectic sangoma, Malibongwe Ngingingini, rides an off-road Yamaha on his local healing trips. In “The Zombie and the Moon”, Malibongwe and his apprentice Anna travel across the States to a grand finale in New Orleans. Peter sums it up by re-phrasing the Harley-Davidson motto, ‘Live to read, and read to live’!This multi-talented author also manages a ceramics’ studio and is launching a range of stoneware ceramics, sundials and birdbaths with solar-powered fountains, which he hopes will pay the bills.

SCHOOL NEWS

The 2011 World Cup rugby is just under two weeks away.Tournament organisers for the seventh Rugby World Cup are forecasting that on the basis of offshore ticket sales to date New Zealand can expect 95,000 international visitors to arrive during the tournament which kicks off on Friday, September 9. Previous estimates released last year had put the expected number of visitors at 85 000. “This is tremendous news and a real sign of just how big Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) will be for our country,” said RNZ 2011 CEO, Martin Snedden. “The upsurge in support from overseas fans is a strong sign of confidence in our ability to host the biggest sporting event New Zealand has ever held. “It also underlines what we have always said; that this tournament brings multiple economic benefits to our country as well as providing a priceless opportunity to show the best of New Zealand to the world.” Strong interest in RWC 2011 RNZ 2011’s own polling also confirms the growing interest in RWC 2011. “There have been suggestions recently that Kiwis were not that interested in RWC 2011, but our research tells us otherwise,” said Mr Snedden. “Nationally, 88% of New Zealanders say they are interested to some degree in RWC 2011 and despite all of the challenges

and disappointments for the people of Christchurch this year, they remain one of the most interested of the regions with 42% of those polled in Christchurch saying they are very interested in the tournament. “More than two thirds of New Zealanders are also looking forward to RWC 2011 more than any other event in the next three years.” Stage set says IRB IRB and Rugby World Cup Ltd (RWCL) Chairman Bernard Lapasset said the stage was now set for New Zealand to shine. “With a month to go we are confident that RWC 2011 will be a resounding success and a tournament that New Zealanders and the global Rugby family will be proud of. “The stadia are ready, the supporting infrastructure is ready, the Team 2011 Volunteers are ready, ticket sales are on track and hosting will deliver long-lasting benefits for New Zealand and New Zealand Rugby. “The anticipation is palpable and as we count down to the opening match at Eden Park on September 9, I have no doubt that fans attending RWC 2011 will have an exceptional experience.” Text courtesy: www.rugbyworldcup.com

While Melanie Johann was in Hamburg, Germany, she desperately needed a comfortable, stylish shoe for city hopping and she bought her first pair of SOFTCLOX in 2010. She was so impressed by the classic wooden clogs with the award-winning soles that she decided to import the range to South Africa. This fashionable, re-designed comfort clog has taken Europe by storm, as it truly has a ‘Wow’ effect.Melanie says: “SOFTCLOX are a friend for life from the very first step. The shoe is light and soft, from the sole to the super-soft leather including the stitching. These award-winning soles are more of a fashion statement for the fashionista than a health shoe. Big Brother is here, but in a good way. Now all Cape Town’s surf will be under close surveillance.

Enter BeachWatch - the first free application of its kind to provide live video streaming of sea conditions from 15 of Cape Town’s beaches to cellphones and web browsers. The application offers strategically placed camera feeds from all of the city’s top surfing hotspots, providing custom views of well-known wave breaks from Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Noordhoek, Kommetjie and Fish Hoek, to name a few. Some of the cameras’ host sites include Gary’s Surf School in Muizenberg, Brass Bell in Kalk Bay, African Encounter in Noordhoek, The Last Word in Kommetjie and New Balance Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club.As a result of this great innovation, watersports enthusiasts can now monitor surf conditions on-the-go, and are saved the trouble of having to drive to the beaches to find the best location at the time.“In Cape Town’s notoriously temperamental climate, planning that perfect day enjoying the city’s finest surf spots is a

tricky exercise in guesswork, with surf and weather conditions often differing substantially from place to place. BeachWatch, from iSee Software Solutions, ensures that the perfect wave is only a click away, bringing the best breaks directly to users’ mobile handsets in real time,” says Johann Stegmann, CEO of iSee Software Solutions.Johann believes that BeachWatch will revolutionise local surf culture. “Wave hunters now have a one-stop solution to reduce both time and hassle, and can now easily plan their watersports activities around the information provided by the BeachWatch service. Never before has a local solution been provided that supplies real-time information on-the-go, and we strongly believe that this application will be invaluable to all watersports aficionados,” he said.Speaking of the inspiration behind the invention Johann said: “Our company’s technology has been available for some time. It has up until now been focused on home and small-business security and we wanted to make the technology more accessible to more people.” With a software team comprising a surfer, a windsurfer and two kayakers, the development of the BeachWatch application was the natural next step. In its Beta phase of development, the application will have some new features added to it soon. Johann confirmed that the technology is capable of being used as a means of spotting sharks in the ocean and that, in the near future, notifications of shark activity would be added to video streams. While the BeachWatch surf cams are currently available exclusively in Cape Town and surrounds, more will be rolled out at other popular South African surfing destinations in the coming months.

iPhone users can now browse the live-streaming videos through visiting www.beachwatch.mobi. For more information and to download this application, visit www.beachwatch.co.za. Also follow BeachWatch South Africa on Facebook and BeachWatchSA on Twitter.
