The Chronicle Your community voice since 1997 I love my students’ enthusiasm for new things and they inspire me to be a better musician. O pera singer and music teacher Shirley Sutherland has two loves – being on stage and encouraging children to develop their voices. This busy wife, mother and teacher/singer lives in the Southern Suburbs and teaches part time at Reddam House, Sans Souci Girls High and Pinelands High. Teaching young people to sing gives Shirley lots of joy: “I love my students’ enthusiasm for new things and they inspire me to be a better musician. Some just want to be the next pop star, others enjoy my classical technique which gives them a wider voice range and a better understanding of their capabilities. I encourage students to sing and explore music by introducing new repertoires and new styles. They also learn a little Italian, German and French, as I find beautiful, simple classical pieces that require good aural skills to produce the correct vowels. This teaches them to listen and concentrate on good sound. To be a singer, a student needs talent and personality plus the discipline to improve their voice every day. “I encourage my singing students to listen to all types of music, and they prepare at least one classical piece. They enter every competition, eisteddfod, exam and concert they possibly can, because they love singing – and if they enjoy the performance, the audience will too.” Shirley’s own career is riding high and she is practising hard for her role in Phantom of the Opera at Artscape. Her stage experience is awesome. “I love being on the stage and have sung in productions internationally in Germany and Sweden. “One of my most memorable and beautiful roles would be Tytania in Midsummer Night’s Dream which Christine Chrouse directed and the late Chris Dowdeswell conducted. I received the Cape Town Best Actress award for the role of Roxie in Chicago.” Shirley began singing at school and in church, and her first music teacher (Tippi De Kock) was a great influence. “She was an opera singer who was trained and performed in Pretoria. Tippi has an incredible way with young children and helps them protect their voices. Their muscles and bones are developing and should never be forced when singing. It’s all about support and control. “She helped me develop an interest in opera and I jumped at the opportunity to study opera at UCT with Prof. Angelo Gobbato. His passion for opera instantly rubbed off on me. I still feel uplifted when I perform. I was also trained by Sarita Stern in the bel canto technique which means ‘beautiful singing’.” Born in Springs, Shirley matriculated from the National Arts School in Braamfontein then moved on to UCT where she received a Diploma in Music and Honours in Performance. Shirley was soon singing the lead roles in musicals which fostered her love for theatre. She has also studied with Eric Muller in Pretoria, where she received a National Higher Diploma in Opera and worked at The State Theatre with Mimi Coertse’s group The Black Tie Ensemble. Shirley has ‘been there and done that’ on the stage, and her repertoire includes: Showboat in Nuremberg, Germany; an appearance at Umea Opera House in Sweden with Rusalka; Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady at Artscape; two operas by Handel at Artscape; The Magic Flute; Die Fledermaus; Carmen at Artscape; The Merry Widow at The Breytenbach Theatre, Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe. Singing and music is a serious business requiring constant dedication for those who want to be more than an overnight sensation. 10 August 2011 Born with a song in her heart 8 Rising stars Women in business 12 4 In the fast lane All your motoring news World Youth Fest Top students in Beijing 3 Reaching new heights Climbing competition takes off Shirley Sutherland, John Walton and Russell Davies performed in a musical blend called ‘Euphony’ at the Masque recently. 021 709 6200 ST. Women from all the four corners of the Southern Suburbs took advantage of the free Women’s Day presentation hosted by Legacy

Fiduciary Services, The Chronicle and The Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust at Steenberg Golf Estate. The presentation, diarised for the morning of Thursday, August 4, was opened by Katja Hamilton of The Chronicle and Director and co-founder of Legacy Chris Murphy. Keynote speakers were Nicky Smit, Deceased Estates Administrator at Legacy; Liz Linsell, Head of Legacies programme at The Children’s Hospital Trust, and Jeneé Stamer Fundraising Relationship Manager at the Trust. Information on wills, estate planning and succession planning was offered and the audience participated in an interactive Q&A forum. Questions on trusts, guardian- and pension funds dominated the floor and were adeptly tackled by Legacy’s professionals. The event was a huge success.“I thought that the feedback from the audience was very useful and it gave them some structure of what to look at in estate planning. Even though we didn’t provide detail, the information was sufficient enough to inspire the women to address their issues,” said co-founder of Legacy, Showkat Alie Mukadam.“Overall I think it was a great event,” said Murphy. “We achieved what we set out to achieve. The questions we got vindicated Legacy hosting such an event specifically for women because the questions we received were tricky yet educated, so there is definitely a need for such information sharing.”Interested parties were also invited to consider becoming a member of the Circle of Life –a legacies programme at the Children’s Hospital Trust – the fundraising arm of the Red Cross Children’s War Memorial Hospital. The programme brings together caring, like-minded individuals who have chosen to leave a legacy in their will to the Trust. Generous bequests from the public have contributed to the recent opening of the Surgical Skills Training

Centre and are contributing to upcoming developments at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital such as the Burns Ward, currently under construction, and due to open in September. Also due to benefit from funding is the B1 Medical Ward which is due for an upgrade. It treats babies with infectious diseases and chronic illnesses and hasn’t been renovated since the hospital was built in 1956. Cost estimated at between R12 and 14 million, construction kicks off in October.Funding from bequests will also go towards funding projects linked to the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital such as an increased fleet of paediatric ambulances in the Western Cape and the operation of The Poison Information Centre.“While all upgrades are high on the list, this year The Children’s Hospital Trust felt they were in a position to be able to expand their focus into the Western Cape. The Trust looked at specific small organisations that would benefit from funding and that would impact the hospital itself,” said Stamer.“I’d like to thank Legacy for giving us the opportunity to tell people about the hospital and the Trust,” Linsell said. “The most important thing is that if people are thinking of leaving a legacy gift in their will to benefit the hospital that The Children’s Hospital Trust - as a Public Benefit Organisation - be their first choice.” The Legacy Fiduciary Services presentation forms part of a series of four annual educationals hosted by the firm. The next presentation will take place on Wednesday, September 21 at Kelvin Grove.

Established 1989

Fifteen Bergvliet High School music students were lucky enough to visit the World Youth Music Festival

in Beijing in July. They enjoyed an awesome week-long programme for school-age musicians and singers from

around the world. This gave the students a chance to showcase their talents in a non-competitive event. Bergvliet High School learner Richard Sturrock said: “We have tasted Chinese food, experienced Chinese culture, interacted with musicians from other parts of the world and have returned from a fantastic journey where we have grown as musicians and as individuals. Thank you to everyone who made our dreams a reality.”Orchestras, string orchestras, ensembles, symphonic wind bands, brass, jazz ensembles and choral groups took part. Visiting Chinese musicians and other artistic and acrobatic performers were included and drama students had Tai Chi classes at the Temple of Heaven, and visited Beijing Opera Schools and the National Theatre. The trip was an introduction to the fascinating world of Chinese culture for the local students. They also had a chance to attend musical workshops with American jazz man John Hoffman. Hoffman has toured and recorded with famous jazz bands like the Buddy Rich Band, the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Glen Miller Band. He has performed with greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank

Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis jnr, Shirley Bassey and Ray Charles. Hoffman currently lectures in Jazz Studies at Qld. Conservatorium Griffith University, where he directs the renowned Conservatorium artists.

AZALEAS, CAMELLIAS AND BRUNFELSIA Although Azaleas and Camellias are botanically very different, they do like the same conditions. They are slow growers but live for quite a few years. Camellias can live for up to 30 years. Brunfelsia is another plant to start getting excited about, as to the soft-coloured petals and exquisitely scented flowers of the well-known Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow - not only a welcome addition to any garden, but also the focus of the horticultural world for Cancer Month this August.COLOURFUL CAMELLIASCamellias are small evergreen trees covered by attractive glossy green foliage. They have masses of showy blooms in winter when the rest of the garden is looking particularly dull. Camellias belong to the family Theaceae and are native to eastern and southern Asia. The first of the popular garden varieties to flower is C. sasanqua, followed by C.japonica, C.reticulata and then C.oleifera. Commercially, C. sinensis is of major importance as tea is made from its leaves. These are just some examples from the wide variety of plants available to choose from for the garden. Camellias grow in semi-shade, ideally where light filters through a canopy of trees. C.sasanqua, however, can tolerate more sun. Avoid planting them in windy spots.ALLURING AZALEASAzaleas are flowering shrubs belonging to the genus Rhododendron. They prefer growing in semi-shade or where light filters through to them. The soil needs to be moist and well drained. Because they belong to the Erica family, Ericaceae, they have a sensitive and shallow root system, and therefore need a well-mulched layer for protection.BRUNFELSIA FOR CANCERThe most well-known of the Brunfelsia genus is undoubtedly the soft pink, mauve and white petals of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. The horticultural industry has decided to focus on Cancer Month (August) with these beautifully scented plants which have a double flush of flowering in early spring and then again in late summer. R2 from each sale of selected plants sold at Starke Ayres Garden Centre in August will be donated to the cause. For more information on Azaleas, Camellias and Brunfelsia go to www.starkeayresgc.co.za

Emerging from the grey of winter can still be a dull time. But luckily for those with greenfingers, there is an escape from this monotony into the colourful world of gardening.

DELICIOUS DISCOUNT AT BHANDARIS!

Celebrating a spectacular milestone of love, commitment and devotion with friends and

family are June and Keith Hutcheson who this month had their 50th Golden wedding anniversary.Hosted by Bhandari’s Restaurant at Westlake Lifestyle Centre in Tokai, the evening was a rip-roaring success thanks to the organisation of PRO Mandi Mathews. Instead of partygoers purchasing presents for the occasion, June and Keith requested that everyone rather bequest a donation to ARISE – an NPO working with vulnerable children many of whom have been abused, neglected or abandoned. “We work to ensure the safety, stability and success of all the children – a holistic model of care encompassing after-school activities, group counselling, individual play therapy, educational support, bible study and family work. “With strong links to local schools in Heideveld and social services, we are able to see children who have experienced real horrors slowly find real hope,” said Debbie Burt, Director of ARISE. “Another situation in which Arise will work with a child

is if its parents suddenly go to prison for a long time, or if there is suddenly no other family member who can help immediately. The organisation also helps children who have been abandoned or who have been sexually abused.”The organisation also focuses on recruiting safety parents, foster parents and adoptive parents. It concentrates its efforts in Heideveld.“This was such a worthy cause that we wanted to encourage others to also help those who are not as fortunate as ourselves,” said the Hutchesons.A cheque of R2500 was handed over on the evening to Debbie of ARISE.Bhandari’s Restaurant offers the finest North Indian cuisine. Master chefs from Northern India specialise in Tandoori and Indian cuisine, and a mouthwatering selection of Tandoori and curry recipes will guarantee an authentic Indian experience.Bhandari’s Restaurant seats 240 people. It features a private function area that can accommodate up to 50 people. Ideal for intimate functions.

Woman’s Day, they said. Write a column about a car for woman.

What a sexist thing to do was my initial reaction. In fact for about a week or so it was my only reaction. Then I

realised I was actually going to have to write this piece. There have been some concessions to women and their needs in a traditionally male-dominated marketplace. For instance, almost everything you can buy has an illuminated vanity mirror fixed into the sun visor. Initially these were fitted passenger-side only, assuming the fairer sex would submissively take this position in automobile hierarchy. These days however they have crept into the driver’s visor too. Few men apply mascara in traffic, nose picking hardly requires good vision and light. Have things gone far enough? It is bad enough that almost no manufacturer considers where we should stow our cellphones while driving, and a cup holder has to make do, but consider the traditional woman’s accoutrements for a trip to the shops. This may come as a surprise to many designers of car interiors, but it isn’t uncommon for a woman to have a purse or handbag with her. Where is it supposed to go? There is the famous anecdote about the old girl who complained about the odd running of her Morris Minor and its over-the-top fuel consumption. Every time the mechanic drove it, it was perfect. Eventually he asked her to take him for a drive. She got in, pulled out the choke (remember those quaint pull-out knobs?) and hung her handbag on it…In this age of niche products, where are the female-only cars with handbag storage, lipstick cooler, and maybe

even somewhere to plug in the good old hair straightener? There have been a couple of people carriers with back-seat passenger viewing mirrors for the moms out there, but not much more. How about a stiletto-friendly carpet? A glove box that is as accommodating as the average handbag? I can’t even begin to contemplate the peculiarities of the combination of the mini skirt bare thighs and sun-baked vinyl seat upholstery although it was, admittedly, a joyful picture to conjure up.Moms out there would probably happily pay for a rear-passenger sound-containment screen, to avoid whines and the joys of Sally and Johnny’s delightful little spats? Then there are the cars for wives - the 4x4 the husband wants but forfeits with a substitute for her. There was a groaner a while back: what do you get your wife if you really don’t like her? (Answer: a Land Rover Freelander I). Sadly Freelander II is so good and reliable, the joke no longer works. See there is no damn way of doing this kind of article without resorting to sexist lashings of condescension but, for the record, there isn’t anything much hotter than a beauty seen driving in her butch 4x4 or a bespoke Italian sportscar, to turn a man’s head and stop traffic.

• For a touch of inspiration, see the advertisement on page 4. Car lashes are the brainchild of Robert Small from Utah in the USA. Robert who owns the patent said: “I introduced CarlashesTM to SA in October last year and the demand for them has been phenomenal!”

FIAT CLUB’S FIRST ROAD TRIPGary Kinsman loves his car so much that he decided to start a Fiat 500 club for other owners of these spunky cars. Using the agent William Simpson’s database he sent out emails to owners.“The response was amazing. Over 30 people joined the first event on Sunday, July 31,” he said. The rally included 30 cars and began at the dealership in Tokai Main Road, and travelled in convoy down the Standfontein Road to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek where they had lunch at BICCS restaurant. The Fiat 500 owners had a chance to win a Sprada coffee machine, hamper of Mediterranean delicacies and a mystery prize from William Simpson. “There is no cost involved to become a member and I will contact other Fiat dealers and get other owners to join. The idea is to meet at various venues, depending where the outing will be headed, and we will also organise breakfast runs and luncheons. I also plan to organise social-responsibility events like food/blanket drives and to maybe join the bikers for the toy run.” Gary also plans to hook up with the Reach for a Dream project to take the children on outings. This plus a photographic competition based on the cars and outings will take place to create a photo-wall, and the company M-photo have sponsored a Lomo camera (worth R1 000) as a prize for the best Fiat 500 picture.Contact Gary on 021 762 0481 or on Facebook.

Rock climbing enthusiasts gathered in numbers on Saturday, July 30 at the South Palms Centre –

opposite Builder’s Warehouse, Tokai, for an outdoor wall-climbing competition with a difference. There was an 11 metre wall from Extremely South Africa sporting top rope routes. Climbers of all ages (beginners to advanced) took to the challenge with strength and dexterity, putting their skills and techniques to the test. There was also a continuously rotating vertical climbing wall called a Treadwall. This is one of the first of its kind imported to South Africa. Located at the newly opened Camp and Climb, the Treadwall – offering the latest technology in indoor climbing – had the climbers intrigued. It rotates using body weight alone and sequences can be made more challenging by changing the angle of the wall. At an estimated cost of R110 000 this was one piece of machinery the climbers couldn’t resist. It is engineered to sculpt and manipulate muscles at a whim.“The competition was pretty awesome. There were some hard routes as I’m of average height and they suit taller guys, but it was fun,” said Sebastian Wyngaard. A climber for two years, with a preference for overhang climbs, Sebastian says although the climbing fraternity is small, it’s a growing sport.“It’s a physically demanding sport, but it’s also mentally challenging as you overcome your fears, particularly of falling, and you push yourself beyond your comfort zone by attempting the impossible. I find the harder the routes I try, the more I grow as a person.”Sebastian adds that the demand for such competitions will be on the increase and he encourages beginners to give it a shot.“The first time I did it I was hooked. Just go climbing and keep climbing,” he said.Jane Hewitson, who has been rock climbing for two years, said she heard of the competition via Climb ZA’s Facebook page, and attempted a couple of routes on the day.Not a fan of indoor climbing, she was intrigued by the outdoor 11m mobile rock climbing wall, but was not entirely won over by the experience. “I’m never a fan of plastic holds

because I’m short and I can’t reach them, whereas with outdoor rock climbing it’s possible to find something in between to grab on to, but if there’s another competition I guess I’d try it again I suppose. Why not?”On tackling the Treadwall, she said although it felt ‘very weird’, it was nevertheless a novel idea. She encouraged beginners to give the sport a try.“It’s a great way to connect to other people and in that way you can enjoy their support. A lot of climbing involves talking about a route and it’s the only way to grow. I love that rock climbing gets me outdoors, that it’s a mental exercise of problem solving and not just physical training.”First prize in the women’s open division went to Gosia Lipinska and first prize in the men’s open division went to Jason Ruger.Prizes included a mountain hardwear splitter climbing bag, a Pro-Q smoker, Maglites, Spyderco, Swiss Army knives and bouldering chalk bags.Organiser Ruth Rudolph, said the project was hard work, but she was happy with the outcome as close on 60 people entered the competition. She commended Extremely South Africa for their mobile rock climbing wall. The 11m wall has since been dismantled but the Treadwall inside the store remains. Climbers can pop in to the store to try it out.
