Program TriangulationPhilosophy on Building a Successful Program

What is Success?

Success is the satisfaction that is felt when you have accepted the challenge and made the effort to do your best. Success in making the very most out of an opportunity.

Successful people take risk, accept challenges, have an unquenchable thirst for improvement, they are life long learners, never seeing a finality in any situation- only looking at life as a continuous growing process.

The program isn’t a physical place or a list of procedures and directions. Its not a calendar of events, x’s and o’s or a flashy uniform. The program is us and the coordinated mental, emotional, and physical approach that we take to accomplish our goals. In short, it is the attitude.

What is the Program?

Ability

When building a program there should be three main goals:

1. Developing Character People

2. Developing Teamwork

3. Developing Successful Competitiveness

In a football program each one is extremely important

Enthusiasm

Ownership

TCPrevious Next

Page 15: Christopher Felton Football Portfolio

The overall goals of the program are as follows but not necessarily in this order:

- Before you develop schemes and plays, you need to develop players, before you develop players you need to develop character.

- The Foundations of any program in the present and in the future start with the willingness of the players to improve, sacrifice, follow-through and eventually lead.

- Cooperation and teamwork are two of the most important skills used in the world today.

- Football is the ultimate team sport and like all team sports, football teaches players the importance of commitment, loyalty, humility, and trust.

- Players in the program must consistently strive to improve their competitiveness. Players must learn to compete, assess, learn, improve, and compete again.

Goals of the Program?

Develop Character

Develop a team of players that have character

Develop successful competitiveness

The Program is not Cause and Effect

Of course building a program necessitates a plan and/or a course of action and in many situations this may mean a step by step approach. But where a coach starts, depends on the situation and the people.

Bottom up approach, Top down approach, inside out approach, or an outside in approach are all acceptable. Everything builds off itself .

For example: Trust, Character, and Hard Work will help a person persevere through difficult situations, but at the same time the perseverance through difficult situations also develops character, trust, and an understanding of the importance of hard work.

Every situation holds in it an opportunity for students to learn and to improve themselves and their team.

Letter to the PlayersDear Lower Merion Football Player,

My name is Coach Felton. I will be your football coach for the upcoming season. There is no doubt that you will enter this season with goals. Some of your goals will be individualized in nature and other goals will be more team oriented. I also have goals for the upcoming season, which I shall outline for you in the following letter. Although winning is important and striving for perfection is a must, neither one of these is on my list. No, my goals revolve around a more important part of this football program, that of course is you. More specifically my goals revolve around developing you into a better football player and more importantly a better person. First and foremost, my goal is to develop you into becoming a team player. You must work hard all year to make yourself better for the overall achievement of the team. The team needs you to prepare yourself and your teammates physically and mentally for the challenges that lay ahead and to not worry about personal glory. When we accomplish this goal, there is nobody in the league who will be able to stop the team. My next goal is to accept nothing but your best effort on and off the field. As your football coach, I will work hard to continue to develop the ideals of discipline, unselfishness, hard work, respect, accountability and toughness that you already possess. Through tremendous attention to detail, we will improve daily. Your best effort will become better as the year progresses. Not every situation will be easy and it shouldn’t be. The most important things in life are not accomplished without paying a price. There is a price to pay for success. My third goal is to teach you how and why to pay that price. By staying true to the ideals of the program you will be able to meet any challenge. You will be confronted with various forms of adversity this season, you and your team must unite to work through them and not let them tear you apart. Those who persevere through adverse situations rise to the top.

My fourth goal is to teach you how to accept decisions. We must all keep in mind that every player is different. Throughout the year I will have many decisions to make. You probably will not agree with all of my decisions and that is acceptable, but as a member of a team I need you to do what is expected of you. My decisions will not always be correct. But I promise that my decisions will be based on my best judgement and the welfare of the team. My final goal is to make you a leader. Leaders are not born, they are built. I want you to lead this team. Leaders bring out the best in the people who surround them. When you leave this program, we will need you to be a leader in the community and the school. The best way to lead is by example. Do your best, be a good teammate, and persevere through the tough times and the rest will follow.

Good Luck,Coach Felton

Training RulesTraining Rules

Participation in inter-scholastic activities including athletics is a privilege not a right. The Head Coach has the right and responsibility to make decisions that are in the over-all best interest of the team.

The following training rules must be followed- no debates

1.The use of Drugs, Tobacco, and Alcohol will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Violators of this rule will be subject to significant penalty including suspensions and possible expulsion.

2.The following is a list of curfews enforced by the football team.a. Football camp 10:00 pmb. During the season school night 10:00 pmc. Night before game 9:30 pmd. Night of game no curfew (use good judgment)

2. Eat good well balanced meals- no junk food- avoid the 5 evils- candy, soda, potato chips, donuts, and French fries.

3. Players are absolutely forbidden to use the snack machine before or after practice.

4. Players are expected to pack a second bag lunch to eat prior to after immediately after you lift weights during the season.

5. Report to football immediately after the bell at the end of the day. Depending on the schedule specialties or lifting starts immediately at 2:45 be dressed, prepared, and on time.

6. Players who are too sick to attend school are also too sick to attend football practice.

7. Report injuries immediately to the football trainer.

8. Injured players are expected to attend all practice in athletic gear.

9. Unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the football team.

10. It is absolutely forbidden to participate in other sports during the football in-season. Many area teams hold practice, watch film, and lift weights on the weekend. The philosophy of this football program is to give you a break over the weekend so that you may rest and recover.

11. In life you must make decisions- football is no different. If you have decided to play football you must make a 100% commitment to our program. During the football in-season All other extra-curricular activities provided by the school and work must yield to the commitment that you have made to the football team. Unless otherwise directed by the head coach- You are required to attend all practices, weight room workouts, film sessions, and all activities provide by the football program in their entirety. Failure to comply will result in immediate removal from the football team.

The Bulldog Club

The Bulldog Club Lower Merion Football recognizes athletics as a powerful educational tool as well as a source of considerable school pride. Our current players are part of a long tradition of academic excellence and competitive athletics. Now is the time for the excellence of Lower Merion to manifest itself on the football field. Like those before them they will leave the program with qualities that last a lifetime, qualities that build strength and character and prepare them for lives of leadership and service. This year will mark the beginning of the Bulldog Club. The goal of the Bulldog Club is to provide alumni, parents, and friends an opportunity to support the school’s football team so that they may develop a tradition of excellence. The Bulldog Club’s contributions will impact the quality of the football experience for student-athletes by providing revenue beyond the annual operating budget. That revenue source will typically allow us to:

strengthen the budget for our team; enhance professional development opportunities for our staff; support our student-athlete awards; purchase special equipment for our team as well as the latest training room modalities and scouting software; recognize our senior athletes and championship teams; and meet many other needs of the program.

In order to establish Lower Merion as a forerunner of the Central League, we need the continued financial support with an interest in and a passion for our football program.

Every dollar contributed by the Bulldog Club directly benefits our football program, and we need your support now more than ever. We hope you will become a part of the team! Help us achieve our goal of becoming a Central League power. There are two ways to donate. 1. You can make a financial pledge per win. For example, you may want to pledge $100 per victory.

or

2. You can make a one time pledge in August in an amount of your desire.

Add in address

Thank you very much for your contribution, your commitment, and support for the programSincerely, Chris Felton

Playing Time TC

Playing Time:

We have a no cut policy in this football program. Any young man who is committed to the team, works hard, and follows the guidelines will not be cut. There are two levels of play; varsity and junior varsity. Players will be placed on these levels based on their abilities, not their grade. The JV squad will consist of sophomores and juniors that are not starters or key subs on the varsity team that week. It is important to note that a player’s level and playing time may vary from week to week. On the JV level, we try to get every player at least 10 plays (offense, defense, or special teams) in the game that week. For varsity games, the best players will play regardless of their grade level.

Parents are always encouraged to speak with the head coach, however, playing time and game plans are not topics for conversation.

If a parent has a concern that does not involve playing time or game plans, they may call or email to set up an appointment. The appointment must be in person and the player must be in attendance.

Offensive System TCThe offensive system is based on the concept of packaging bread and butter plays with constraint plays that are created to deter defenses from over committing to the bread and butter plays. In other words it is a series based attack.

This system is adaptable to personnel, the system can be run from under center, shotgun, pistol. With heavy formations and spread formations.

The run and pass plays are incorporated with the idea of best utilizing our team’s talents.
