DONATE TO PURCHASE
CHICKENS FOR LOW INCOME
FAMILIES
On Sunday, October 30th, the Mission
Committee announced to the children
of our church that we would like them
to collect change in heart shaped
boxes to help purchase chickens for
low-income families through the Pres-
byterian Giving Catalog. 20 boxes
were distributed that morning to the
young people in our congregation.
Each family of chickens costs $25. A high-producing chick-
en can lay one egg almost every day. Gifts of chickens can
provide a family with an ongoing source of food and nour-
ishment. This is a tangible way we
can support people in need. Sever-
al congregation members asked if
they could also contribute to this
cause. Absolutely!
The Mission Committee will be on
the patio on Sunday, November
27th, December 4
th and 11
th, to re-
ceive your loose change, and any
other donations you would like to contribute. On December
18th, we will collect all the heart boxes from the children
and will determine how many chickens we can purchase.
Parents, remind your kids to bring their heart boxes back on
Sunday, December 18th and bring them up for the children’s
sermon. If you weren’t at the October 30th service and
would like to receive a heart box, please email Pam Presnall
([email protected]) to request one.
UPDATE FROM ZETEO MISSION
We are beginning another season of
planting. The plants will spread for the
next three months. Whenever we
plant, we always are grateful for a new
opportunity, as well as hopeful for the
future - knowing our crops and our
lives are in God's hands. We can only
do our best and let God take care of
the rest. Whatever happens, we are grateful.

R. Winston Presnall, Pastor PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Adventers,
The season of patient waiting is upon us. The “what already is” and “what is to come” plops right in the mid-
dle of a drama. Good drama, always begins right in the middle of the plot. In Advent, we look back to what
God has already done. We look forward to what God will do. We are in Advent, a between time.
How shall we wait? We can look back furtively, nostalgically to a time that was better than now, we say. We
can bide our time in predicting the unpredictable: the return of Christ. We live out the days without a sense
of purpose in the now, refusing to invest in the nowness of time. What the heck. It will all be over...soon...or
sometime.
Christians were urged to wait patiently, faithfully. Paul said, “Let us lay aside the works of darkness and put
on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not reel in drunkenness, not in debaucher, not in
quarreling in jealousy.”
Nowness means aliveness. Living in the Light. Dispelling the darkness. Lighting one small candle of self that
burns into self-giving love.
Alan Boesak, the South African Dutch Reformed cleric and politician lived in the midst of the very dark times
of apartheid. He spent his life working for light in this darkness, which would be the recognition of blacks as
citizens and fellow members of God’s family. If his name pops up in Advent, it is usually because he finds
his words on the pages of the clerics and preachers of this day for what can be known as Advent Credo.
It is not true that creation and the human family are doomed to destruction and loss. This is true: For God so
loved the world that God gave God’s only begotten Son, that whoever believes in the Son shall not perish
but have everlasting life.
It is not true that we must accept inhumanity and discrimination, hunger and poverty, death and destruction.
This is true: I have come that they may have life and that abundantly.
It is not true that violence and hatred should have the last word, and that war and destruction rule forever.
This is true: Unto us is born, unto us a Son is given, and the governement shall be upon his shoulder, his
name shall be called wonderful councilor, mighty God, the Everlasting, the Prince of Peace.
It is not true that we are simply victims of the powers of evil who seek to rule the world. This is true: To me
is given authority in heaven and on earth, and lo I am with you, even until the end of the world.
It is not true that we have to wait for those who are specially gifted, who are the prophets of the Church be-
fore we can be peacemakers. This is true: I will pour out my spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughter
shall prophesy, your young men shall see vision and your old men shall have dreams.
It is not true that our hopes for liberation of humankind, of justice, of human dignity of peace are not meant
for this earth and for this history. This is true: The hour comes, and it is now, that the true worshipers shall
worship God in spirit and truth.
So let us enter Advent in hope, even hope against hope. Let us see visions of love and peace and justice.
Let us affirm with humility, with joy, with faith, with courage: Jesus Christ - the life of the world.
(From Walking on Thorns, Alan Boesak, Eerdmans, 2004)
Peace unto you,

BOOK CLUB
Begins again January 25th
The Book Club will be taking a
break until January, when we will be
reading Trustee from the Tool-
room by Nevil Shute. A brief synop-
sis: "Kevin's quiet life expands when
he learns of his sister's death in a
shipwreck. Acting as the trustee for
his orphaned niece, he sets out to
recover her inheritance now nestled
in a coral reef somewhere in the
South Pacific." Until January, enjoy
reading those other books that you long to finish.
HOLIDAY HOPE
Sat • Dec. 3rd • 9 am-2 pm • Church Campus
First Presbyterian Church will host
Holiday Hope this month. This is a
day of Hope and Love for women,
children and men in transition, for
participants of shelter programs in
Orange County. This year we plan to
expand the kids crafts area to include the whole fami-
ly. We will NOT be offering clothing, however we will
be offering accessories such as purses, gloves,
scarves, hats and caps for children, women and
men. We WILL be collecting the following items for
donation:
Travel-size hygiene items such as shampoo, body
wash, toothpaste, disposable razors and lotions.
New and gently used items the children can give to
their mom and dad as gifts. A gift of a new ball or
a new doll for a child.
$5 Gift cards from Taco Bell, McDonald's, Carl's
Jr., Del Taco, Dollar Tree, Target, Walmart, etc. We
will wrap these with 2 pairs of tube socks for the
teens.
Please bring donations to the church office or contact
Judy Sollee: 714 858 8030.
Bonnie Sharp is heading up the collection of plates of
cookies for families (see below).
Volunteers: We need you. We need people to escort
our families from service to service around the cam-
pus. To give encouragement, to hold a baby while a
parent receives a service, to stay with them and be
their best friend for the day. Call Marsha Zembower at
714-283-3842 to sign up.
COOKIES FOR HOLIDAY HOPE
You are needed to bake those COOKIES for Holiday
Hope where once again we, who have so much, can
give to those families with so much less that have
been chosen to spend a special day at First Pres Or-
ange. Please provide one plastic or paper plate or cov-
ered tin with two dozen home cooked cookies. It's
nice to include a note or Christmas card on the
top. They are due at the church office between 9 am
and 4 pm on Wed. Nov. 30th or Thurs. Dec. 1st (office
closed Fridays). One plate or twenty - all are needed.
Sign up at the Kiosk on Sundays or with Bonnie Sharp

A GREAT ADVENT-URE &
ADVENT WORKSHOP
Sunday • December 4th • From 10:00 am • McAulay Hall
Kids and their grown-ups experience Advent
through hands-on messy activities! Families are
welcome to join us for worship in the Sanctu-
ary and parents can leave with their kids
around 10:15 am if they wish to join in. The
celebration continues for everyone with an af-
ternoon making decorations and gifts for the
Christmas season. All supplies are provided
along with instructions and helpers PLUS a soup luncheon!
KIDS’ ADVENT TUESDAYS
Tuesdays • Nov. 29th-Dec. 13th •
6:30-7:30 pm • Lion’s Den
Join Leanne & Cristina this ad-
vent season for a fun time learn-
ing about the Christmas story
using all our senses. For Ele-
mentary school ages.
NEW INQUIRER’S AT FPCO!
On October 22nd we held our latest Inquirer’s and New Mem-
bers Class. Pictured here (from left to right) are Jen & Ty Cota-
Robles, Virna Bolang, Joshua Parera-Bolang, Abigail Parera-
Bolang, Jennifer Grissom, Pat & Jim Macdougall and Brenna &
Keegan Bell. Some of the group are already members and
some have since submitted their member applications. We are
delighted to welcome all of them. We will hold a New-Member
Commissioning Ceremony during worship on January 15th,
2017.
SESSION HAPPENINGS
Be sure to save the date of Sunday evening,
December 11th for the Christmas Concert
(6pm). The Session approved a ticket price
of $5 for this very special event in the life
of our church. (BTW: kids under age 12 get
in free!).
Session members will be busy during the
next two months as they will be serving din-
ner at Sunday Night Together, preparing
and serving food for Tuesday Night Togeth-
er and preparing coffee and cleaning up
after the Coffee Hour during the month of
December.
Session approved the opportunity to host
the youth group from Castlewood, South
Dakota at a time to be determined next
June. These are youth coming from a kin-
dergarten through 12th grade school of
about 800 students and most of the youth
have never been out of South Dakota. Just
think what they will have to teach the youth
from our church!
You should be able to see better in the
Worship Center since Session approved the
installation of new LED bulbs which will not
only increase brightness but decrease the
total wattage used and thus reduce the
church’s energy bills.
By the time you read this, exhibits should
have gone to the City of Orange from the
Architects for the church’s Site Redevelop-
ment project. Look for exhibits in McAulay
Hall and on the church’s web site.
Speaking of the web site, the Session ap-
proved funds for a re-do of the web site to
make it more attractive to the younger gen-
eration and those who are looking for a
new church home.
Special thanks to Lynn Winn for seeing that
the financial records of the church were
found by the Audit Committee to be in ex-
cellent order.
HANGING OF THE GREENS
Sunday • November 27th • 10:00 am • Sanctuary
On the first Sunday of Advent we will 'hang the
greens' in our Sanctuary as part of a special
worship service. Worshippers will participate
in a liturgy which explains the significance of
the symbols. We hope that this not only enliv-
ens our worship, but renews our thoughtful
praise as we begin the Advent Season.

December News
"For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And
he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
- Isaiah 9:6
At this writing we are preparing for our annual Christmas Program on
Thursday, December 8th at 6:30pm in McAulay Hall. Families are invited,
as is the congregation, to support the children’s performance!
Fun Trivia Facts:
If you received all the gifts in the song "The
twelve Days of Christmas," you would
receive 364 gifts.
In Greek ‘X’ means Christ. That is where the
"X-Mas" comes from. Not because someone
took the "Christ" out of Christmas!
Wish list: Small cups for wee little hands,
Kleenex, baby wipes, fish crackers, small
and large thin white paper plates for crafts,
your old towels when you get new ones, and
anything you want to give. We are thankful.
Merry Christmas from all of us at the Orange Presbyterian Preschool &
Infant Care Center!

sure a toy is appropriate for a child's
age. Guidelines published by the CPSC
(Consumer Product Safety Commis-
sion) and other groups can help you
make those buying decisions. Still, use
your own best judgment - and consider
your child's temperament, habits, and
behavior whenever you buy a new toy.
You may think that a child who's ad-
vanced in comparison to peers can
handle toys meant for older kids. But
the age levels for toys are determined
by safety factors, not intelligence or
maturity.” For more information visit

CHURCH DIRECTORY
By this time most of you have had your photo taken. Thank you
for helping to make our directory complete. We had almost 80
families photographed. Our committee wishes to thank Jennifer
Grissom and Connie Noren for being there every Sunday for sign-
ups as well as welcoming people for their photo shoots. Also,
thanks to Annette White, Ann Wells, Carol Culbert, Pat Gunderman
and Karen Godfrey for welcoming people. Our church directory
couldn't have been completed without you. We are grateful! Our
new directory will be available soon! - The Congregational Life
Committee.
