Christmas 2019
Dear Parishioners,
On behalf of the Staff, Deacons and Priests of the Reading Catholic Community I wish all of you a very
Blessed Christmas and a Holy New Year! It has certainly been quite a year for St. Athanasius and
St. Agnes Parishes as we officially became a Collaborative with the same priests and staff: a ton of
challenges and frustrations but with buds of hope popping up all over the place.
Our biggest success this year has been with our Faith Formation Program which has been combined into one
overall program for both parishes. We have over 900 children enrolled in all grades with 273(!) in
Confirmation Preparation: all this would not be possible without the greatly appreciated and most needed
115 volunteers. The past few weeks have given us glimpses of the good things happening with lots of
Confirmation Students helping out at the annual Christmas Faire and the Nativity Prelude that was held at
the end of the 10:00 Mass last Sunday. We had about 30 children from both parishes acting out the Nativity
– it was AWESOME. They really helped us focus on joy that comes to the world from Jesus.
Many of you are familiar with the Matthew Kelly books that we have passed out at Christmas for the last 6
years and this year we will be sharing another great book. These books are provided to us by the Dynamic
Catholic Institute, a company founded by Matthew Kelly to provide inspiring programs to help Catholics
everywhere to become who God wants them to become. This year we are one of forty parishes/
collaboratives across the country who have been chosen to be part of the Dynamic Parish Initiative offered
through Dynamic Catholic. A dream of this initiative is to help each of us deepen our faith and in this
process make our parishes stronger and more dynamic. Dynamic Parish is a five year program which is fully
funded by Dynamic Catholic. We launched this program in November. As part of the program, over 230
parishioners, young and old, attended a DREAM EVENT two weeks ago at the Reading Memorial High School.
Despite the weather and all the competing events in Reading that night we had a great turnout. The Dream
Event provided an opportunity for us to open our minds and hearts to what God wants for our lives, our
parishes, our communities. One of the main messages of Dynamic Parish is the power and importance of
prayer: it is through spending more time in the presence of our loving God that we are strengthened in our
faith and become more open to God’s plan for us. Will you join us on this journey?
From the Prophet Isaiah we read, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those
who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.” These words reflect what seems to be going on in the
world around us and maybe even in our own personal lives? Isaiah continues, “For a child is born to us, a
son is given to us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-
Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful…” In Luke we read, “Now there were
shepherds living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flocks. The angel of the Lord appeared
to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them…. I proclaim to you good news of great joy for all the
people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ the Lord…. and suddenly
there was a multitude of the heavenly hosts with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the
highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
~ May his peace rest on you this Christmas Day and throughout the New Year ~

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us also celebrate those who through
Baptism have been re-born as members of His Church. We pray for these families; grant
them the wisdom to raise these newly baptized through example and action so that they
come to know and live Your loving ways.

A solemnity is the
highest ranking holy
day in the Church
calendar. The
Solemnity of Mary
is a liturgical feast
day honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary's motherhood
in the wake of the birth of the baby Jesus Christ. This
day is also the Octave of Christmas or the 8th day of
Christmas. As Mary's fiat reminds the faithful:
"Be it done unto me according to Thy word."

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust: Christmas Collection 2019
The Christmas Collection is for the clergy Health and Retirement Trust, an independent trust that provides for
the health and well-being of the 580 active and senior priests in good standing in our Archdiocese. We are
especially grateful for our senior priests like Rev. Arthur Flynn, Rev Edward Malone, Rev. John Morris, and
Rev. George Vartzelis, Rev Robert Butler, Rev Ronald Calhoun, Rev William Kremmell, and Rev Charles Rouse
who took such great care of us through the years. This special Christmas collection allows us to now help take
care of them.
As we celebrate the holidays with our family and friends we ask for you to please take this opportunity to
thank and support the many devoted priests who are always here fur us.
Thank you for your generosity and prayerful support of our priests.
Silver Rose Rosary
Prayer Service

at St. Agnes Church
Hosted by The Reading Council
Knights of Columbus
What is the Silver Rose program?
Several Silver Roses travel across Canada, Mexico
and the US to share the message of Our Lady of
Guadalupe and promote respect. The Silver Rose
program demonstrates the unity between Knights of
Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico,
through a series of prayer services promoting the
dignity of all human life and honoring Our Lady.
Please join us following the Service, in the Lower
Church for hospitality.
Dynamic Parish
This year we are excited to offer everyone Matthew Kelly’s latest book, Rediscover the Saints, as a Christmas
gift from the Reading Catholic Community. God is constantly trying to open our eyes to the amazing
possibilities that he has enfolded in our being. Rediscover the Saints shows us that the saints are ever-
present, encouraging us to explore all our God-given potential. We invite you to read just a few pages a day
and see how it infuses your life with meaning and purpose. You might start at the beginning, or, given the
season – you might skip ahead to consider what can be learned from St. Nicholas. How can we bring the joy
and generosity of Christmas to people all year round?
If you did not receive your copy of Rediscover the Saints, please take a book from the stacks by the entrances
of the church. Merry Christmas!

Three Things the Holy Family can Teach us About our Own “Yes” to God
• The Holy Family actively participated in their response to God’s invitation: Mary responds “Let it be to
me according to your word,” (Luke 1:38) and then lives out her response by carrying and birthing her son.
We read that Joseph “… did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him.” (Matthew 1:24). And we see
Jesus’ “yes” throughout Scripture as he grew into his ministry. All three members of the Holy Family
actively participated in God’s invitation to bring about God’s kingdom through their words and actions. We,
too, are invited to actively participate in God’s invitation to us. Is God inviting us to a verbal response and/
or a response of action right now?
• The Holy Family’s “yes” to God was not just one time, but an ongoing yes: Mary and Joseph did not just
say yes once, but they continued their response to God’s invitation to raise and nurture Jesus. Their
response to God’s invitation deepened in their lives. Jesus’ response to God’s invitation occurred over and
over again as he fully entered into his public ministry and later his passion, death, and resurrection. Where
is God inviting us this Advent and Christmas season to deepen our own “yes”?
• The Holy Family rooted their lives in God: Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were able to say “yes” to God because
they had a relationship with God. The Gospels offer us many examples of Jesus turning to God the Father
in prayer to help him continue to say yes to his mission. Do we need to nurture our own relationship with
God this Advent and Christmas season in order to say yes to an invitation?
The Advent and Christmas seasons are a time of opportunity to pause and let the story of the Holy Family’s
creation deepen within us and help us say “yes” to God. https://www.ignatianspiriuality.com

Emmanuel ~ God With Us ~
This excerpt from St. Athanasius’ famous work On the Incarnation
portrays the drama of the Word of God breaking into our world and
assuming a human body in order to save us.
“… He therefore took to himself a body, no different from our
own, for he did not wish simply to be in a body or only to be
seen. If he had wanted simply to be seen, he could indeed
have taken another, and nobler, body. Instead, he took our
body in its reality. Within the Virgin he built himself a temple,
that is, a body; he made it his own instrument in which to dwell and to reveal himself. In this way he received
from mankind a body like our own….”
