Whilst the earthquake on February 22nd. 2011 was not as powerful as the earthquake on Saturday 4th September, 2010. The damage and death wasmore extensive.

The epicentre of the quake was much closer to the surface and to the City Centre. Around 5 kms below the surface and around 10 kms from the City Centre in February.

Whilst the September earthquakes epicentre was around 40 kms from the city centre and 10 kms below the surface

The increase in death was partially caused, due to the time of day and day of the week

The September earthquake happened early on a Saturday morning before the stores had opened

The February earthquake happened during the lunch period on a weekday, when offices and stores were open. Leading to many more people in the city centre.

Office workers, shoppers and visitors rushed to assist those trapped and injured

Another reason for the extensive damage is due to buildings that had been weakened By the earlier earthquake in September and subsequent aftershocks collapsed

Liquefaction was also more of problem with the February earthquake

The damage was not only confined to the City Centre, suburban areas and surroundingCountryside also felt the effects of the earthquake

Christchurchs historic Cathedral, which has survived previous earthquakesSuccumbed to the February earthquake

A number of people were injured in vehicles traveling through the city as the Earthquake struck
