Divine Service

April 16, 2017 – 9:00 AM Easter Sunday

Welcome to Peace! Thank you for being with us today to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. We left church on Friday in silence, contemplating the death of Jesus in our place and for our sins. Just as the earthquake broke the silence early on that first Easter morning, our voices are raised to sing our thanks and praise to our resurrected Lord. “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”1 Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

If you are a guest or visitor with us this morning, we are glad that you are here and we hope you will join us again soon. The ushers are available to help if you need assistance.

Today, April 16th: 6:30 AM Easter Sunrise Service 7:30 AM Easter Breakfast 9:00 AM Easter Festival Service

Sunday, April 23rd: 8:30 AM Worship Service 9:45 AM Sunday School and Adult Bible Class 10:45 AM Worship Service

Before Worship

As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer:

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you conquered death and opened the gate to eternal life. Grant that we, who have been raised with him through baptism, may walk in newness of life and ever rejoice in the hope of sharing his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be dominion and praise now and forever. Amen.

For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped to the room to let you hear and see the service.

Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side.

The Resurrection of Our Lord

P: Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.”

P: Christ is risen!

C: He is risen indeed. 2

P: Christ is risen!

C: He is risen indeed.

2 This is known as the paschal greeting. For centuries, Christians have used this greeting during the 50 days of Easter. When the Pastor says, in the service or sermon, “Christ is risen”, the congregation responds, “He is risen indeed!” Please follow this tradition during the service this morning.

Hymn: #355, “Now Christ Is Risen” Verses 1-3 – All; Verse 4 – Men; Verse 5 – Women; Verse 6 – Men; Verse 7 – Women; Verse 8 – All

P: In the name of the Father, who created us, And of the Son, who died for us, And of the Holy Spirit, who makes us holy.

C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sins, knowing that our risen Savior has defeated death and won the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

C: O Father in heaven, your word proclaims, “the wages of sin is death”.3 I confess that I have sinned against you by my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart. I have not loved my neighbor as I ought. Because of my sins, I deserve temporal and eternal death. But Your word also proclaims, “For God so loved the world that He gave is only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”4 You raised Jesus from the dead, so that I could be certain of my salvation. Therefore, I plead for your mercy and humbly ask you to forgive my sins and grant me eternal life for Jesus’ sake.

P: Lift up your hearts! Our Lord Jesus has paid for all your sins by His innocent suffering and death. His triumphant resurrection proves that God the Father has accepted His perfect life and death on your behalf. Our resurrected Lord said, “If you forgive anyone His sins, they are forgiven.”5 Therefore, as a called servant of the living Christ and by His authority, I forgive all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Hymn: #355:9, 10, “Now Christ Is Risen”

P: Let us pray.

C: Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of Your Son, You conquered death and opened the gates to eternal life. Strengthen us by our Savior’s victory to put away sin and lead a holy life. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

First Lesson – Jonah 2:2-9

2He said:

"In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry. 3You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. 4I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' 5The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God. 7"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. 8"Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. 9But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."

Hymn: #354:4, 5, “Like the Golden Sun Ascending”

Second Lesson – Colossians 3:1-4 1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above,

where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above,

not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Hymn: #354:1, 2, “Like the Golden Sun Ascending”

Gospel Lesson – Matthew 28:1-10 1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and

the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from

heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Exordium Hymn: #348, “He Is Arisen! Glorious Word!”

Sermon Text: Romans 4:25 25He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Sermon Theme: Christ Was Raised for Our Salvation!

6 The Exordium is an “introduction” for the festival day. This is a tradition of Norwegian Lutherans that dates to the 16th century. After the Exordium, the congregation stands to sing the festival hymn.

We Bring Our Offerings

The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

Romans 8:32

Please fill out the Friendship Register.

The Prayer of the Church

P: O Lord God, our strength, our song, and our salvation, you fulfilled your promises by the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead.

C: Thanks be to God! You give us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

P: In your compassion you sent Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life to rescue the lost.

C: Drive out all doubt and gloom that we may delight in your glorious triumph.

P: Lift our eyes heavenward to see him who lives to make intercession for the saints, and grant us confidence in the greatness of his power. Keep before us the vision of your redeemed people standing before your throne and singing the song of victory:

C: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive wisdom and power and honor and glory and praise.

P: Make us instruments of your peace as we bring the good news of hope and new life to those around us. Guide us in the use of all that you have entrusted to us: our time, our talents, and our treasures.

C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for you.

P: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

P: Gracious Father, you have restored to us the joy of your salvation. With happy hearts, we come before you and say:

C: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen.
