Prayer, fasting and almsgiving
This coming Wednesday, we will start our Lenten Season and it is important that we recall that the three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The key to re-newed appropriation of these practices is to see their link to baptismal renewal. Prayer: More time given to prayer during Lent should draw us closer to the Lord. We might pray especially for the grace to live out our baptismal promises more fully. We might pray for the elect who will be baptized at Easter and support their conversion journey by our prayer. We might pray for all those who will celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation with us during Lent that they will be truly renewed in their baptismal commitment. Fasting: Fasting is one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent. In fact, the paschal fast pre-dates Lent as we know it. The early Church fasted intensely for two days before the celebration of the Easter Vigil. This fast was later extended and became a 40-day period of fasting leading up to Easter. Vatican II called us to renew the observance of the ancient paschal fast: "...let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, pro-longed throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be at-tained with uplifted and clear mind" (Liturgy, # 110). Fasting should be linked to our concern for those who are forced to fast by their poverty, those who suffer from the injustices of our economic and political structures, those who are in need for any reason. Thus fasting, too, is linked to living out our baptismal promises. By our Baptism, we are charged with the responsibility of showing Christ's love to the world, especially to those in need. Fasting can help us realize the suffering that so many people in our world experience every day, and it should lead us to greater efforts to alleviate that suffering. Abstaining from meat traditionally also linked us to the poor, who could seldom afford meat for their meals. It can do the same today if we remember the purpose of abstinence and embrace it as a spiritual link to those whose diets are sparse and simple. That should be the goal we set for our-selves—a sparse and simple meal. Avoiding meat while eating lobster misses the whole point! Almsgiving: It should be obvious at this point that almsgiving, the third traditional pillar, is linked to our baptismal commitment in the same way. It is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given to us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were bap-tized.

Why do we see purple now??? Why do we get ashes on our foreheads? ???
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, blessed ashes are put on your forehead
in the shape of a cross. These ashes are made by burning palm leaves which were saved from last year’s
Palm Sunday. Ashes remind us that in time we all die and must try our best to remain close to God. Ash Wednesday is also when we begin to do penance for Lent and purple is the color associated with
penance. You will be seeing a lot of purple during this “season”! Penance is something we do to
improve our relationships with God and others which are damaged by our sins. The Church suggests
three special practices of penance for Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
We will explore these more next week. Did you know? While we traditionally give something up for Lent (such as soda, candy, video games
etc) you can also prepare for Easter by doing something extra. Some ideas are: pray more, read Bible
stories, do something nice for someone without being asked, go to the Stations of the Cross. What can
you think of that will help you grow closer to God and be more like Jesus? Share your ideas with your
family.

STEWARDSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Stewards of the mysteries of God---that’s what St. Paul says we are in today’s second reading. And the first requirement, he says, is that we be trustworthy. Entrusted with the gift of faith, do I share it as gratefully and as generously as I do my time, my talent, and my treasure?
PRAYER BLANKET MINISTRY
Do you knit, crochet, quilt, or weave? Your time, talent, and prayer can provide healing consolation and a comforting embrace to those experiencing physical, emotional, or spiritual difficulties. Each recipient is
prayed for by the blanket maker. The blankets are BLESSED by Fr. Herrera and are a GIFT from Christ Our King and Savior. The next Prayer Blanket Ministry Meeting will be Monday, February 27 at 10 a.m. in the Bride’s Room (the small room next to the Social Hall). Consider joining this worthwhile ministry. You would be most welcomed. Your creativity can provide loving support for someone in need. If you are inter-ested in this ministry, but can’t attend the meeting, contact Sara Kahl at [email protected] or 706-999-9955.
