VESTRY NEWS
Drew has now been instituted as our new Rector and he and his wife Teresa and daughter Catherine have settled into the Rectory.
The Rectory has ben redecorated from top to bottom, a new kitchen has been installed, new carpets have been laid and the roof has been partially reslated following a leak.
The leak brought down the bathroom ceilng which has delayed the fitting and decorating of a new bathroom as the walls will have to dry out first, but the Rectory is looking beautiful and we hope Drew and his family will be happy there.
Last Sunday Charity Collection
The charity collection for the second quarter came to £300 which was sent to the Mission for Seafarers.
The third quarter charity collection will go to New Beginnings and the fourth quarter, as usual, will go to Children in Distress.

Irene FergusonSandra & Bobby Burgon would very much like to thank all those who sent cards and messages of condolence and support following the death of Sandra’s mother. These were greatly appreciated by all the family. Thanks also to the Pastoral Care team for their regular visits with Irene. Over her fifteen year in the congregation, Irene made many friends at Christ Church and the Lunch Club. The family were very appreciative of the attendance at Irene’s Memorial Service and the collection in aid of Yorkhill Children’s Hospital raised £295. Many thanks again.

On Tuesday 14 June Christ Church was full to overflowing with Christ Church members, representatives of the local community, many friends, relatives and fellow priests who came along to welcome Drew to his new charge in Lanark. The Right Revd Dr Gregor Duncan, Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, read the oaths and the Constitution of the Charge to Rev Canon Drew Sheridan before Drew signed the Constitution and Deed of Institution and pledged to care for the community at Christ Church, Lanark and to share in ministry with them and with the community of Lanark. As the procession of clergy left the church at the end of the service they lined up on the footpath while the Bishop gave the final blessing.
Following a wonderful service, everyone retired to the church hall for refreshments and a slice of Doreen’s superb cake.

What a wonderful night we all had. We wish Drew well in his new charge and look forward to many happy years with Drew as our Rector.

We are very fortunate indeed to have been called to such a loving and caring community of faith. You are obviously a people for whom prayer and action go hand in hand. We know already that we are going to be very, very happy here. We arrive at Christ Church just as everything in the parish community slows down and comes to a stop for the long summer sleep. While this may appear to be bad timing, it is actually quite fortuitous, because it gives, me especially, time to settle, find my feet, visit as many of you as possible and gently ease myself into a new and very different set of circumstances. Normally this happens in the thick of things and is a task never satisfactorily completed. This way, however, should have a different result as we embark on our new beginning together.
New beginnings can be very exciting. One of my favourite new beginnings at school was getting a brand new jotter fresh from the pack. Writing my name on the front, bending back the cover and opening it up to smell its freshness, I used to wonder what would eventually fill its pages. (We enjoyed simple things like that in Carluke!!) Moving to be among you has the same kind of feeling about it.
The glorious service of Institution held on the evening of 14th June was the moment I wrote my name on Christ Church’s jotter, folded back the front cover and made my first jotter entry in it. Since then the pages have slowly been filling with reports about our first Sung Eucharist together on 19th June, and our sun kissed ecumenical service and barbecue at Cleghorn Estate on 26th June. To these have also been added sketches of our Lunch Club’s sumptuous Summer Buffet, Nell Broadbridge’s fund raising tea dance/ceilidh and Lanark Grammar School Prize Giving. It has been a lovely new beginning, which I have thoroughly enjoyed; I hope you have too. continued.....
New BeginningsDear Friends
On behalf of all the Sheridans I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Christ Church for the wonderful welcome you have given us to our new church family and home town. The thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity you have shown us prior to, during and after the transition from Greenock and Gourock have bowled us over and blown us away.

Exciting as they can be, new beginnings can also be unsettling. They are journeys on uncharted territory. They are occasions of unavoidable change. Each new day the disciples spent with Jesus was a new beginning for them; he took them to places and exposed them to wonders they would never have dreamt of before. The disciples survived each new beginning by opening themselves to Jesus leading and having faith. We need the same openness and faith as we start our new relationship in mission and ministry together. We Christians are people of “The Way”, always on the move, forever on the cusp of a new beginning, continually drawing upon our faith resources to let go and let God. May God strengthen us in faith, sustain us in hope, and renew us in love, as together we uncover more wonders of his kingdom in our midst.
Yours, in Christ’s service
Drew
“Every Sunrise”
Every sunrise is a present, a gift from God above, Gift-wrapped with scarlet ribbons and tied with bows of love.
Each is a new beginning, a time to start anew, While all the stars are sleeping, and the rose is fresh with dew.
Each day’s a new creation, too lovely to ignore, And we may not find a blessing, just outside our door.
We cannot keep the past, like fireflies in a jar, Nor journey to the future by wishing on a star. Every sunrise is a blessing, a gift for just today,
Rejoice, my friend, embrace it before it fades away!

Ecumenical Outdoor Service ......Rev Drew did a fine job with the Almighty in arranging that once again we were blessed with good weather for our open air service and we hope that he and Teresa enjoyed the occasion. This year the service was led by Gemma and our Sunday school children who did a fine job of leadng us in readings, prayers and hymns on the theme of ‘new beginnings’. We were delighted that members of other churches in the town came along to join us.
Our grateful thanks go to the Eliott-Lockharts for hosting this again at Cleghorn Estate. We would also like to thank all the members of the congregation who supplied food and drink for the barbecue and muscle power when erecting the marquee and gazebos.
Niamh, Addie and Emma played the flute and keyboard and Jade read a poem about Life Changes. Many thanks also to Kristyna for playing the hymns for us.

..... and Barbecue
Richard, John and Frank proved to be adept at barbecuing. Jamie was an expert barman and ......
..... the congregation provided enough wonderful food to feed the 5000!

Notices that didn’t quite ‘make it’…
The preacher for Sunday next will be found hanging on the notice board in the porch.
Churchyard maintenance is becoming increasingly difficult, so it will be appreciated if parishioners cut the grass around their own graves.
BaptismThe vicar announced that an additional font would soon be placed in the church, so that babies could be baptised at both ends.
No worriesA 102 year-old lady was asked if she had any worries about the future, and replied: “Not since I got my eldest son into an old people’s home.’
VaticanOnce asked how many people worked in the Vatican, Pope John XXIII replied: “Oh, about half.”
Open wideA lady was very nervous about her appointment at the dentist. She sought courage from her Bible. The verse her finger landed on was Psalm 81:10: ‘Open thy mouth wide and I will fill it.’
Laughter is the Best Medicine
What exactly is ‘a lie’?A little boy was asked in a school exam to explain what ‘lying’ is. He wrote: ‘A lie is an abomination unto the Lord, but a very present help in trouble.’
Preaching hazardsShowing your new parish that you are a forceful preacher may not always be a good idea, as the Rev Sydney Smith found out when he first arrived at All Saints Church in Foston in 1806. ‘When I began to thump the pulpit cushion on my first coming to Foston, the accumulated dust of 150 years made such a cloud that for some minutes I lost sight of the congregation.’
