BONUS

Our reporter, Hannah Barker, joins a group of teenagers for a weekend survival course.

They have only been on the course for 36 hours, but they have already picked up some useful survival skills. They have learned to find water and make a fire. They have also learned how to build a waterproof shelter from branches and leaves. Now, it’s evening and everyone is sitting round the campfire chatting. ‘We didn’t sleep much last night’, says fifteen-year-old Beth Green. ‘We were talking and singing songs all night!’

Beth and her classmates are part of a group of students from Cherry Grove Secondary School. They are on a survival skills course organized by the Really Wild Survival Company. The course started on Friday morning and finishes on Sunday afternoon. The five teachers are all experts in survival skills.

As part of the course, students can also try out new activities. ‘I’ve already been kayaking’, says Sean. ‘I’ve done rock climbing,’ says Beth, ‘but I still haven’t tried out kayaking. I’m going to do it tomorrow. I don’t want to miss out on anything!’

Shopping online Advantages Disadvantages• compare different products

Vegetarianism:

yes or no?

At my school, many people have become vegetarians. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being vegetarian?

Eating less meat and more fresh fruit and vegetables is healthier. Meat

production is bad for the environment, too,

because it uses a lot of water. Some people also

think that killing animals for food is cruel.

However, there are some disadvantages to this

type of diet. Firstly, it can be difficult to eat enough

nutrients if you don’t eat meat. Secondly, it’s not

always easy to find food that is 100% vegetarian.

To conclude, I think that being a vegetarian

has many advantages. However, vegetarians

have to choose their food carefully.

Shopping online: pros and consShopping online has become very popular. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Shopping online can be (1) . You don’t have to wait in queues. It is also easier to (2) and prices. However, there are some disadvantages to shopping online. Firstly, a lot of people are worried about (3) . Secondly, you (4) before you pay. Another disadvantage is that products can arrive (5) .

Present perfectUse• We use the present perfect to talk about past experiences

or events, when the time is not important or not known.

I’ve bought some new jeans.

There hasn’t been a lot of rain recently.

• We sometimes use ever in questions to mean ‘at any time

in our life until this moment’.

Have you ever tried trail biking?

FormAffirmative

I / You’ve finished. I / You have finished.

He / She / It’s finished. He / She / It has finished.

Questions

Have I / you finished?

Has he / she / it finished?

Have you / we / they finished?

• Present perfect: have / has + past participle

of main verb

We have finished. He has left.

• In spoken language, we usually use the short forms (’s /’ve, haven’t / hasn’t) after a subject pronoun.

• We use the full forms (have / has, have not / has not) in

formal texts.

• Do not confuse the short form of has (’s) with the short

form of is (also ’s).

• The past participle is formed like the past simple.

Regular verbs:start ➔ started

study ➔ studied

Irregular verbs:

See the list on page 120.

Present perfect with for and since• With the present perfect, for and since describe the

duration of an action or event which started in the past

and continues into the present.

• We use for + a period of time (for five years, for three months, etc.).

I’ve had these shoes for two years. (And I still have them.)

• We use since + a point in time (since last week, since yesterday, etc.).

We have lived in this city since 2012.

• We use how long with the present perfect to ask

questions. We usually answer these questions with for or

since.

‘How long have you lived in this city?’ ‘Since 2012. / For five years.’

Present perfect with still, yet and already• We use still and yet to say that something hasn’t changed.

Still is used in negative sentences and it comes before

has / have. We use yet at the end of the negative

sentence.

John still hasn’t bought anything in the sales.

We haven’t tried wakeboarding yet.

• We use yet at the end of the question form.

Have you joined the fashion design class yet?

• We use already with affirmative sentences to say that

someone has done something. We use it between has /

have and the past participle.

I’ve already seen that film.

Beth has already been to the gym today.
