The neighborhood, she is a-changin’. Two updates on some big redevelopments that will impact Crescent Heights:

Art Keller, the DEA agent at the center of the novel, is in dogged pursuit of Adan Barrera, the head of a drug cartel, but finds his efforts blocked by criminals, government agencies, and the CIA. Although writing fiction, Winslow has been praised for his extensive research and the accuracy of his depiction of the “War on Drugs,” the power struggles among the people invested in it (on both—or perhaps more accurately, multiple—sides), and the violence that has accompanied what he ultimately presents as an unwinnable battle.(This novel precedes Winslow’s 2015 novel The Cartel, which in turn was followed by this year’s release of The Border)

The main reason a member chose this book was because, in a former book club, every single person found joy in reading this selection. It was just one of those magical, intriguing, delightful tales that draws you in from the very beginning and makes you wish it would go on forever!

Young Reuben Land has little doubt that miracles happen all around us, suspecting that his own father is touched by God. When his older brother flees a controversial murder charge, Reuben, along with his older sister and father, set off on a journey that will take them to the Badlands and through a landscape more extraordinary than they could have anticipated. Enger’s novel is at once a heroic quest and a haunting meditation on the possibility of magic in the everyday world.

Church of the BeatitudesCHNA is still working in partnership with Blue Water Development and the City’s Historic Preservation Department to have the sanctuary designed as historic. The developer will retain the structure and redevelop it into a really neat single-family home. With the stained-glass windows and historic architecture, who wouldn’t want to live there? It was a tough compromise and I know we all miss our beloved community meeting center and polling place. However, at least a piece of our neighborhood’s history will be preserved. Demolition on part of the building (the extension from the 1950s) will begin shortly, and the application for the sanctuary is making its way through the City’s approval processes as we speak. As the application for historic landmark status is owner-requested and supported by the neighborhood, there should be no issue to get approval!

Have a wonderful summer! Get ready for our amazing fall events, including a bigger and better Shuffleboard Tournament, the annual Halloween Block Party and Decoration Contest, and Lights in the Heights. Jen Wright

Sometimes pets appear just when you need them. That was the

case for Shuko, one of Crescent Heights resident Cara Olson’s

dogs.

It was 2011, and Cara, a Spanish teacher, was living and teaching

in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“I found quite a few strays while teaching there and always

brought them to a nearby shelter. I was just starting to think that

it was a good time for me to get a dog the day Shuko followed one

of my students to school,” Cara says.

This small, black, fine-haired dog crawled into Cara’s lap, on the

drive over to the shelter.

“’We Found Love in a Hopeless Place’ by Rihanna was on the

radio, and I thought, well my dog found me,” she says. “I did

drop him off at shelter, where they were required to hold him for

three days. I was going out of town, but I returned five days later

with my ex and we adopted him.”

(In case you are curious: Shuko means hot dog in Guatemalan

Spanish. Cara had been living in Guatemala prior to New Mexico.

Shuko, looking like a wiener dog, thusly got his name.)

About four months later, Cara decided that Shuko “needed a

brother.”

A bigger dog who could help scare away coyotes, on the 20-acre

property where Cara and Shuko were living, was what Cara had

in mind. What they found at an adoption fair was a year-old,

shepherd-y looking guy who wasn’t especially large -- except for

his ears, which are so tremendous they barely fit in his kennel.

Guapo -- whose name means handsome, and just look at how

well it suits him -- had spent nearly his whole life in an animal

shelter, at that stage. He was enthusiastic about being adopted.

“He kissed us and snuggled with us,” Cara says. “He had a big

grin on his face.”

Cara -- now teaching at Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa -- and her dogs moved to St. Petersburg about five years back, to live near the water. Six months ago, she moved to a midcentury duplex on 26th Ave. N in Crescent Heights, with the dogs and her partner Peter -- a woodworker who made much of the gorgeous art and furniture in their place.

Cara and Peter love living in Crescent Heights. The area is perfect for their

super active lifestyles -- both paddle, run, bike, and do a host of other outdoors

activities. (In fact, Cara wakes up at 4 in the morning to walk the dogs, then

do CrossFit for an hour before she heads to work. It’s inspiring -- if exhausting!

- to imagine.)

The dogs are happy to be living here, too, since “everyone is very dog friendly, it’s a beautiful neighborhood to walk around. Crescent Lake is close by, and there are a lot of squirrels,” Cara says. Shuko, now about 10 years old, loves the dog park. Nine-year-old Guapo is able to indulge his passion for fetch, on a daily basis.

And naturally, Shuko and Guapo have some things they’d like to express about living here: “First off, they would like to apologize to our neighbors for how excited they get about the mail carrier and UPS delivery,” Cara begins.

“Also, Guapo is sorry that he growls at other dogs on leash, but he promises he is a very nice guy. Shuko would like to apologize for his inability to resist humping dogs smaller than him at the park,” she says. “They would both like to remind everyone to take the time to play, snuggle and feast each day.”

Nature Watch South • Lust is in the air!

By Bill Richkus

Having spent most of my life in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions, I developed a deep love of spring and fall, in particular the variations in wildlife behavior and vegetation that accompany the changes in daylength and weather. In my first year in Crescent Heights, I had to recalibrate the markers that I traditionally used to herald the beginning of each of the seasons up north. Instead of leaf drop coinciding with the beginning of fall, now in my second full year here I have noted with despair the massive leaf drop of our live oaks and laurel oaks marking springtime in Saint Petersburg. Instead of listening for the haunting calls of Canada geese migrating into the Chesapeake Bay area at the beginning of fall, here we wait for the arrival of the silent but stunningly beautiful white pelicans to Crescent Lake and Coffeepot Bayou to signify we’ve reached late fall and winter. But despite the latitudinal- and climate-related differences in changes in plants and wildlife that occur seasonally, one thing remains the same for most wildlife from south to north: spring is the time for seeking mates and reproducing. So besides the gorgeous spring weather we are fortunate to enjoy here in St. Pete, we can also take delight in the varied courtship behaviors of the wildlife with which we share our neighborhood.

You cannot walk our streets on any spring morning without being bombarded by bird song. Probably the noisiest of our feathered vocalists are the mocking birds. On nearly every other corner you can find a mocker perched on high, creating his own musical piece, splicing together his own creations with other sounds he has heard, including mechanical machine noises and calls of other birds. Attracting mates and establishing territories is the purpose for this behavior, and the males back up their aggressive calls with action when necessary. A few days ago, while on our morning walk, Sharon and I nearly collided with two mockingbirds battling fiercely, pecking at and grasping each other with their feet while moving up and down in the air, oblivious to their surroundings.

Two other ubiquitous love-sick feathered Romeos in the neighborhood include the pointy-tailed mourning dove, generally perched on power lines and making their mournful coo, coo sounds, and its squared-tail cousin, the collared dove, with their coo-coo-coo sound and nasal whines. You will frequently see males of both dove species pursuing prospective mates from line to roof top to tree to line, stopping each time to call some more and break into their courtship display. Another common resident, the gorgeous red male cardinal, does not seem to be as aggressive as the doves in his behavior toward his potential mates. You can see him perched on high and making his beautiful calls, but never chasing a female from bush to bush. I guess he is just vain, assuming his beauty will bring potential mates to him.

Our most abundant resident mammal, the squirrel, has its own non-verbal courtship routines, and they begin much earlier in the season than the comparable bird activities. As early as February, but extending throughout most of the year, you’ll see squirrels chasing each other up, down and around tree trunks, through tree branches and across streets from tree to tree. Most of this chasing is a male pursuing a potential mate, who is playing it coy and actively eluding his amorous approach until she is ready and willing to commit to his advances. The fact that a female may have as many as three or four broods a year is why squirrel chases are so common and squirrels are so abundant.

Lots of reproductive behaviors can be observed around Crescent Lake. The musical trill of the glossy male redwing blackbird is a true sign of spring in wetland areas. Clinging to a reed or other bare perch near water, he will partially extend his wings so the bright red epaulettes on his wings, lined along the bottom edge in bright golden yellow, are fluffed up. This year I observed one of our local grackles doing his own thing on a bare branch, making his rattling call while vibrating his partially extended wings with his beak pointed toward the clouds. Without the color highlights of his cousin the redwing, I guess he has to make a more ostentatious display of ardor to attract a mate.

Some species of waterfowl have truly spectacular courtship behaviors, some of which you may have seen in widely distributed nature videos on YouTube. Unfortunately, we don’t have local species that put on such shows. However, around the Lake you may see a group of ducks, generally three to five, flying rapidly around the lake, over the trees and back over the water, constantly changing their positions relative to each other. What you are most likely observing is a single mallard female being pursued by several amorous males (the ones with the green heads and white neck rings). Unlike monogamous geese and swans, females of most duck species breed with one or more males and raise their young entirely on their own. Groups of males have been known to pursue a female until she lands on the water and then literally drown her while competing to mate with her. So in nature, as with mankind, excessive desire can lead to unintended tragedy!

CHNA Beautification Project

CHNA has applied for a grant from the City of St. Petersburg to plant a variety of Florida-native plants along 5th, 7th, and 8th Street N. in the verge/easement. We are targeting the little “pie pieces” that are formed where sidewalks intersect, and will create a beautiful garden that will help soak up rainwater and attract bees and butterflies. Each neighbor that agrees to install the plants will be involved in the plant selection and garden design process, and as you walk along the street or sidewalk, we can all enjoy the beauty. As a part of this process, CHNA will also be offering Florida-friendly gardening workshops so that you can plant the beautiful flowers that you see in your own yard. Be sure to join our e-mail list (visit www.mychna.org) to get more information about the workshops that will be offered.
