  • The MoveX6 became known as the only independent space in London. lts base

was broad. Besides running intensive programmes of classes and work-shops, it became established as a venue used for:1. Personal rehearsal by members of the collective, and those with

whom they wished to work.2. Classes and workshops taught by members of the collective and

invited teachers.3. For performances by collective members, other artists in this country

and artists from abroad. As a base and basis for the magazine New Dance. For conferences and meetings.

ln the summer of 1980, it became obvious that all the artists workingat Butlers Whai'f, (of which there were many besides ourselves) were goingto have to leave due to redevelopment of the site. The artists organised, and formed the Butlers Wharf Association, of which X6 Dance Spacebecame a member. The brief of the association was to find and establishnew premises. The search finally resulted in Chisenhale Works, ChisenhaleRoad, E3. The Butlers Wharf Association reformed as ArtPlace Trust, anda massive renovation programme has been set in motion of which we are apart.

It's important to the vision of this project that the building holds a 25year Iease.

  • OurAimsIt is important that the work that was begun at X6 be allowed to

continue. Our aims include setting up and developing a fruitful relation-ship with the local community by:(u) providing classes and workshops, led both by ourselves and invited

local people.(b) by giving space to and for community events and performances.(.) by going out, making contact with other dance people/activities andteaching in local centres.

Many of us have worked or are still working in other London urbancommu nities, be it with children, people with physical disabilities, mothers and babies, teenagers. We see ou r intention as cross culturalrather than inveterately rooted in a western aesthetic. Between us we leadsessions in a broad range of skills including: tap, ballroom, ballet, danceand movement, art therapy, gymnastics, contact improvisation, iazz, jive, keep fit, contemporary dance (cunningham), alexander technique, disco, the martial arts such as tai chi chuan and aikido, voicework, improvis-ational and compositional skills, anatomical studies, and structural align-ment, vocal dance.

Amongst our normal facilities a creche will be provided.

  • of a canal, overlooking Victoria Park. lt is a short walk from Mile Endtube station, whjch is only fifteen minutes from central London. We areconfident that the space will quickly become recognised for its local aswell as national and international scope and achievements.

To date the working artists have:weather-proofed windows and roof, laid a sprung maple dance floor, completed electrical fittings, prepared entrances and exits, pointedand painted all walls, set up a rudimentary office and administrativefacilities which also houses New Dance magazine.

  • New LocationChisenhale is located in a much more suitable environment to run a

community project. The dance space being on a residential street locatedin the heart of the East End of London is in an area which has few otherviable facilities for leisure/recreation or cultural activities.

The space at Chisenhale is ideal for dance and related activities, beingclear light and expansive. The building is in a unique position, on the edge
