Congratulations to the 2012 - 2013 Lady Captain, Glynis Hendry and to her Vice-Captain Barbara Head, a formidable pair on and off the golf course! I’m sure I can speak for the ladies’ section in wishing them all the best for the season. Congratulations also to Club Captain Moshe Kohli and his Vice-Captain Dick Purchase. Thank you to outgoing Captains, Mike Sim and Caroline Jones who ensured that we had a very a enjoyable 20011 - 2012 season. Enjoy your ‘retirement’. Glynis has gone through the ordeal of her Lady Captain’s drive-in at the Mixed season opener with161 yards and, obviously she was more relaxed the second time around at the Ladies’ Season Opener when she hit a whopping 190 yards. Well done to you. Our thanks must go to Craig and his crew who have worked tirelessly over the summer supervising and implementing the new irrigation system; it meant a lot of hard work in the harsh summer temperatures of 45 plus but each and every one of the maintenance crew was totally committed to getting the course ready for the start of the season. Well done to you all. Another ‘newbie’ this season is Pro Bryan Smith, from Northen Ireland. …from Janice Marler in UKHello all,

We are both fine and loving it here in UK; it has been such a great summer with the Jubilee and the Olympics and all sorts of other things going on, catching-up with friends and family. 25 Years of Emirates Golf ClubMarch 8th sees the 25th anniversary of the Club opening so we there will be some special events around that time which will be revealed in due course. There are still some founder members at the Club, Margaret and Ed Bain, Jacqui & Tom Barry, Surender & Bubbles Kandhari and Mike Sim. Where did those 25 years go? It would be interesting to have kept facts and figures for those years ..how many rounds of golf have we played, how many hours have we spent at the Club…and how much money?? Meanwhile, here are a few photos of ‘the early years of EGC.

The season is in full flow already and everyone seems to be throwing

themselves into all the golf competitions and events that are happening; the Club is certainly busy which is great to see. You really need to have your ‘A’ game with you even this early on as there has been some incredible scoring to date. I’d better get my skates on or it will be Curtisy Cup before I know it and I will be scrambling to get enough points to play in the team in May! Well, enough of fast forwarding and back to the present. Congratulations to the 2012 - 2013 Lady Captain, Glynis Hendry and to her Vice-Captain Barbara Head, a formidable pair on and off the golf course! I’m sure I can speak for the ladies’ section

in wishing them all the best for the season. Congratulations also to Club Captain Moshe Kohli and his Vice-Captain Dick Purchase.Thank you to outgoing Captains, Mike Sim and Caroline Jones who ensured that we had a very a enjoyable 20011 - 2012 season. plus but each and every one of the maintenance crew was totally committed to getting the course ready for the start of the season. Well done to you all.

Here have been a few changes on the staff front over the summer with our new Spike Bar

Manager, Andre Fourie Grove who is doing a fantastic job; he’s hands-on,

always around and happy to answer any questions you might have. In Le Classique, Christelle Pourcel has been promoted and is now running Legends restaurant at the Creek.

The new Restaurant Manager is Camille de Compiegne and he is keen to get to know the members over the course of the season. You will see a lot of Golf Experience Manager, Mohammed Al Shaibani, who will usually

be seen with a camera in his hand as he records all the events that take place throughout the season. Another ‘newbie’ this season

a super event which has been revived after an absence of 11 years. It was well subscribed and a great day and evening. Welcome to you all and I’m sure you can count on the support of the members.

The ‘big’ kids are Jim Mullins & Paul Thornberry trying out 5 year-old Sean’s Christmas skateboard,

…Margaret & Ed Bain who just celebrated their 42nd Wedding Anniversary in Cape Town!

…for Jacqui Josephson who asked me to let everyone know the good news that she had a full check-up last week and is now cancer-free.

…Chris Purchase who went on a golfing holiday to South Arica and, on the first day there, she slipped and tore the ligaments in her foot…oops!

…this didn’t actually happen at our Club bur something I witnessed at The K Club in Ireland during the summer (EGC ladies must all be behaving themselves as I have nothing to report from here!)

The group ahead of us was very slow and, while we were waiting, yet again, to play our approach shots into the 10th, one of the guys ahead decided to go fishing in the lake for his golf ball, or so we thought. Actually he was fishing for something bigger than that as he had left his electric trolley on while he played his shot and it decided to go for a swim along with his, wallet, phone etc Oops (but it was funny!)

“I guess I am not a professional’s professional. I’d rather go to the dentist than play a practice round”. Laura Davies“I’ve never had a coach…most people make everything far too complicated, in life as well as golf. You can pick up a club

and just get on with it”. Laura Davies

What a start to the season it’s been. The season opener on September 28th, was such a great day and enjoyed by all

who took part. This was quickly followed by our Ladies’ Season Opener on October 1st with a fun scramble format. Lunch followed with table goody bags very kindly donated by Reflections hair salon along with a ‘spot’ prize of a fantastic massage at the salon, won by Nina Watson. La Vela Candles and Shirley Conlon organic Face Products generously

sponsored a few hole prizes and of course Stephanie Wilson provided the amazing cupcakes on all the tables! A big, big thank you to all of the day’s sponsors!Every season brings new events and sponsors and we were very lucky to have Sri Lankan Airways sponsor our October Medal with a fabulous prize to the Net winner of an all-exclusive trip to Sri Lanka to play in their own annual Golf Tournament. Miriam Wormser was an outstanding winner, but was unfortunately unable to travel to Sri Lanka, so our runner-up Youngja Yoon made the trip. Special note must also go to Viv Caley who played a fantastic round of 79, winning both the gross and net prizes for silver ‘A’ division. It is of course ‘Pink’ October and some of the EGC ladies made the trip to Abu Dhabi to play the National course’s Breast Cancer Charity tournament. It really was a lot of fun with Barbara Head, Carolyn Thompson, Stephanie Wilson and myself coming runner-up in the dress-up prize with one of our classic outfits! With a seventies theme, prizes were awarded for originality and fun which our ‘Charlies Angels ‘ outfits certainly were! Well done girls! The Beginners’ Group is well under way with eager new golfers negotiating the challenging courses, under Barbara’s wing, so if you find yourself behind these ladies on a Tuesday morning, please be patient and try and remember what it felt like to be a beginner. Before we know it, they’ll be ready for the Monday Competitions.Big congratulations to Naima Maya for winning the Seniors’ Tournament which was followed by a fashion show by Baruni Fashions, and modeled by our very own members. Well done to everyone involved. There are lots of events ots coming up with our November medal and of course the Heritage Trophy rounds 1 and 2 on the 19th and 26th November!Happy Eid break to everyone and if you are travelling stay safe!

Glynis HendryLady Captain

…to Senga Newell, Darren Cole and Bill Gandy who were all visiting recently (not sure Senga is visiting or staying though!). Welcome in advance to Joan and Rai Legnar and to Paula and Frank Johnstone who will be visiting at the end of November. I know this because they will be staying at Barry’s B & B of course!

WORDS OF WISDOM

EGC is one of the few clubs in the UAE that runs a large Beginners’ Group’ which is a great introduction to playing golf with people of the same standard. The Club Pros

assist with clinics throughout the season and the Lady Vice-Captain, introduces new golfers to the fun and frustrations of the game on Tuesday morning 9-hole competitions Barbara Head takes over the Beginners’ Group this season and below is some information from her.now that the weather is beginning to cool off , our Beginners’ Season is just about to start. 12 ladies turned up to the Coffee Morning on 10th October which was a great relief after weeks of watching the sign up sheet with only 2 names on it! This upcoming week sees our first outing onto the Majilis. There is a full programme from now until December with 9 hole rounds and clinics from our Pros. If there is anyone else who wishes to join in, just let me know. As someone who learnt to play golf here and started in Fay d’Abo’s Group, I know all too well how daunting it can all be. 17th October sees the first round in the Inter Club for us at Arabian Ranches. My hope is to give as many people as possible the chance to play over the year. There are sign up sheets or again, just speak to me. We are in League 2 along with Arabian Ranches, Yas and Saadiyat so there is the chance to play some lovely courses there. Play well everyone.

Congratulations to the team of Glynis, Barbara, Carolyn Thomson and Steph Wilson who ventured to Abu Dhabi for their annual Pink Ball Charity Goff Day.. no prizes for the golf but a 2nd place prize for their outfits which looked fabulous.
