NEWSLETTER No.14 – 17TH MAY 2016
Dear Families, Education Week: This week is a special week in all State Primary Schools
in Victoria. Education week is an opportunity to celebrate the terrific work that goes on in our schools every day of the school year. At Chilwell we have a range of activities planned which will illustrate the work that we are doing, share information on the task of teaching and parenting and inviting all to view our school at work.
This week. What an action packet week we are in: Prep Enrolments: Tours of our school was available today at 9.30 and
again on Thursday at 2.30, with an information night on Thursday at 7. If you have relatives, neighbours or your family has an eligible prep then we would love to see you attend any of the tours or the information night.
Invitations to join in our schools activities this week are: Join any Information Technology session (times have been sent out) Alphabet dress up day for the Preps is tomorrow - Wednesday Grandparents day on Friday morning in the Prep classes, Athletics day for years 3-6 at Landy Field on Thursday
NAPLAN: Congratulations to our year 3 and 5 cohort, parents, staff and especially the children who undertook these assessments last week. As always our children gave every challenge their best. Thank you to the staff and the rest of the school who accommodated changes in order to undertake the assessments. Thanks to Kim for her organisational skills.
Phones at school: At times parents send children to school with mobile phones. We request that during school times we want phones stored in the office or the teacher's office. Phones are both valuable and easily lost therefore the storage is vital. They will be handed back or collected from the office at the end of the day.
Found: I have 2 mobile phones which have been handed in to me. If you
have lost a phone contact the office to arrange their return to you. Also, a pair of glasses have been handed in – purple frame.
School Council: Last night our school Council conducted the May meeting.
A large number of items were discussed including: Out of School Care accounts. Curriculum delivery at Chilwell. NAPLAN. Report format at Chilwell. Development of Facilities both at present and into the future. Finances for the school - Accounts and budgets. Strategic Plan development this year. Curriculum Report.
Do you have any expertise in acoustics? We are looking at installing baffles in the staffroom to reduce the noise level. Please contact Scott or Gavan.
Meetings: Staff have 2 regular meeting days/times. Mondays we alternate between staff meeting and curriculum meetings
from 3.45 to 4.45pm. Wednesday's meeting involves Action Research and projects identified by
each of our units (P-2, 3&4, 5&6). Again these meetings last one hour. Report Writing Day: A reminder that next Wednesday, 25th May our school
will be "closed". On Wednesday the staff will be hard at work writing reports on your child. This involves approximately 2 hours per child to complete so the day is vital in ensuring quality reports. Interviews will follow in the last week of term where our children will be involved in discussions with teacher and parent regarding their learning. Interviews will also provide an opportunity for you to meet with the teacher alone to discuss any issues or share.
Birthdays. Happy birthday to the following students who will be
celebrating their birthday next week.
Regards, Gavan Welsh, Principal
Wanted: Newspapers for the Art room. Congratulations to the following students who received an award for Resilience.
Our “You Can Do It” focus this term is Resilience. Resilience means getting back up when somebody knocks you down. It also means having a positive attitude and a smile everywhere you go. Xavier and Lulu - YCDI Committee Leaders.

Walk Safely to School Day. WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016 Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: - Walking with them the whole way to school - If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop - If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the
rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Smarter Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 20 May 2016! For more information, visit www.walk.com.au
On Friday the 22nd of April the School Captains accompanied Mr Welsh to the Regional ANZAC ceremony. We gathered inside the memorial hall at Johnstone Park with over 200 other school leaders. We were spoken to by an army cadet about the values that form the ANZAC spirit. Each school had a floral tribute which we laid in turn while the Christian College choir performed for us. After our turn the special guests laid their tributes and talked to us about what the soldiers did to make our country free of conflict. The last post was then played followed by a reflective minute silence. Then to finish 2 verses of the National Anthem were sung. At the conclusion of the ceremony all the schools caught up in the council chambers and enjoyed some nibbles and drinks. We then adjourned to pick up the 2 Vice Captains and went to lunch at McDonald's. Overall it was an eye opening and special day.

Education Week Special Invitation
To celebrate Education Week, Chilwell is holding some special events.
All parents are invited to ICT open sessions where parents will have the opportunity to take part in ICT lessons.
Friday the 20th May is Prep Grandparent morning – 9.30-10.30am.
Prep tours and enrolment information for 2017 prep parents.
Activities in and beyond the Classroom. Here is an overview of some of the ‘extras’ that are taking place this term at Chilwell. They are often designed to enhance and complement the curriculum and themes being undertaken in the classroom as well as giving our diverse range of learners a broad range of activities to participate in.
Chilwell Knitters. This term students created a ‘Folk of the Faraway Tree’ Scarf for the Scarf Festival at the National Wool Museum. Grandparents were involved and taught students textile skills in Art Room on Wednesday Lunchtimes. We will continue with ‘Yarn Bombing’
PE. This term hosts School House Athletics, School/District and Division Cross Country. Lightning Premierships for Grade 5/6 students in TBall, netball, Soccer and Football. Peter Blackall coordinates all of these. He has also coordinated specialist netball and cricket coaching for Grade 3/4 and a visiting Cats player. The 5/6’s have also had basketball clinics. Prep–2 also had their Cross Country. Year 6’s helped with this event.
Student Teachers. Rohan Perrott coordinates all of these placements and we receive many offers throughout the year mainly from Deakin and often 4th year student teachers who stay for several weeks. They work within all grade levels and will often ask to come back on a volunteer basis. This year we cannot keep up with the demand.
Junior School Council. This has been created to enhance the Student Voice within our school and had representatives from Grades 4-6. Matt Limb has developed the Council and it runs at lunchtimes with students chairing, taking minutes and discussing issues that they promote on behalf of their fellow students. They conduct surveys such as time allocation on the oval and they collate that feedback and make decisions.
Excursions Grade 1 Train Stations Old/New and Library Grade 3 Art Gallery Grade 4 Geelong Botanical Gardens
Camps Grade 5 went to Maldon Grade 6 went to a new destination at Alexandra. Both camps were based outdoors and were physically challenging and both were a huge success. The camps focused on teamwork, personal development and interpersonal skills. The feedback from students was positive and both the Camp Organisers were very impressed with our students conduct. Great parent helpers and valuable experiences.
Book Fair Kristy is hosting Scholastic Book Fair in the Library. This usually raises funds to go towards Library resources.
Education Week Includes Prep Info night, school tours and a Prep Grandparents Day hosted by Sarah and Olivia.
Library. Open on Wednesdays lunchtimes for quiet reading
Anzac Service This involved our whole school community. Hosted by the Grade 6 students and facilitated by the Grade 6 leaders. Coordinated by Grade 6 teachers Steph and Jason.
Music. Rohan continues to nurture our student’s musical interests before school on a Thursday.
