RHS Trial of Chilli 2013; suitable for patio and containers

Introduction:

There were 51 entries in the Trial submitted by various seed companies in the UK and Europe. The objectives of the trial were to assess a range of cultivars; to recommend the

Award of Garden Merit [AGM] to outstanding cultivars for patio and containers, windowsill or greenhouse, and to demonstrate the cultivation of this crop.

Judging and Recommendation for the Award of Garden Merit: The over-arching criteria for recommendation of plants for the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) are:

Excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions

Available

Of good constitution

Essentially stable in form and colour

Reasonably resistant to pests and disease

This trial was assessed for the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Vegetable Trials Assessment Forum during the period June to September 2013 using the following attributes: Plant height & spread; habit; fruit shape and size; colour transfer to ripening; fruiting abundance, assessment of heat; overall ornamental value of the plant Cultivation: At West Dean Gardens, West Sussex, seeds were sown during the week commencing 11 February. Two seeds were sown per 7cm pot, using an all-purpose sowing compost with added vermiculite, and subsequently thinned to one seedling per pot. Temperature on the propagation bench was maintained at 25°C until germination and emergence of cotyledons. The seedlings were grown on in a glasshouse at 15°C. The young plants were then potted into two-litre terracotta pots using a compost mix of one-part John Innes No1 to two-parts multipurpose compost, and grown on in an unheated glasshouse, maintained at a temperature of 12-13°C. Seedlings were initially fertilised with Maxicrop, then a balanced fertiliser (1:1:1) as plants developed, changing to a high potassium (K) fertiliser as first flowers appeared. Biological controls were used as a preventative measure against aphid, whitefly, thrips and spider mite. A watch was kept for grey mould (Botrytis cinerea), and any infected leaves were quickly removed. The trial was recorded and assessed at West Dean on 18 June and 24 July. The cultivation process at Sandhill Nursery Preston, Hull, East Yorkshire, was similar to that at West Dean Gardens, although seed was sown slightly later, on18 March. Entries 1-36 were potted into plastic three-litre pots and grown on in an unheated glasshouse. Entries 37-51 were transplanted into the glasshouse beds. Three plants of each entry were also planted into ten-litre pots, hardened off for two weeks and placed outside in a sheltered spot, on 1 July, after all danger of frost had passed. The trial was recorded and assessed at Sandhill Nursery on 15 July and 18 September.

Upright plant, branching habit, height c. 36cm. Stem, foliage, fruit very dark-purple. Fruit blocky in shape, held erect above the foliage. Interesting and unusual variety.
