Eventing has its roots in the selection and training of cavalry horses and consists of three phases of competition ‑ Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country.

DIVERSITY Eventing is a sport that engages a diverse community of participants and is one of the few Olympic sports where entrants compete against each other without regard for age, gender or background.

Competition classes range from 80cm (training classes) up to 120cm (International CIC**** level). Chilham Castle events are seen as educational and encouraging to the novice combination, yet sufficiently challenging for the more established competitor.

COMMITMENTExperience, training and commitment are necessary for success in eventing, along with the investment of a significant amount of time and finances. Such are the demands at the higher levels that eventing can become a full‑time career and necessitates an extended support crew at home and on the road.

The eventing community is, for all it’s size, very close‑knit. Jumping fixed obstacles at speed carries an element of risk ‑ mutual appreciation and care between participants is commonplace. Brand awareness and loyalty amongst the community is high with recommendation and reputation frequently sought.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Ever wondered what it takes to run or compete in a horse trials?

Your host will provide guided tours to small groups so that you can experience the judge’s view of show‑jumping as well as visiting the timekeeping and scoring teams. Be driven around the cross country course and speak to the fence judges before visiting ‘Control’ ‑ the event nerve centre.

Complete the tour by meeting some of the riders and volunteers who help make the event possible.

TOTAL ATTENDANCEThe footfall forecasts contained within this brochure are based upon 2006‑2017 statistics for the whole Chilham Park Annual Event Schedule.

The total footfall forecasts reflect both all competitors and spectators including support teams, volunteers, local residents, event visitors purchasing admission, trade‑stand personnel, sponsors and their guests.

Officials, suppliers and additional spectators will also be present such as pony club members, liveries and pupils of Chilham Park. These have not been included in the total attendance forecast.

Chilham Castle International Horse Trials sees over two‑thirds of the total annual visitor footfall.

COMPETITORSChilham Park attracts a large numbers of competitors each year from all over Kent as well as the South East of England. Competitors from as far as the Midland, the West Country and Wales also travel to compete at Chilham Park.

With the FEI selecting Chilham Park to include their international class, and with the castle less than half an hour away from Dover we predict increased attendance from European competitors.

Our demographic attendance is estimated to be 70‑80% female, with 50% between the ages of 25‑34 and 20% between the ages of 16‑24 and 20% between the 35‑44.

VOLUNTEERS & OFFICIALSThese events could not be run without the loyal support from our volunteers.

They are largely from the local counties, are of all ages, with an interest in both equestrian sports and their local community. They are welcomed into the Castle every year for the Christmas Party – to which all of our sponsors are also invited.

LOCAL RESIDENTS & VISITORSThe Castle stands at the heart of the medieval Chilham Village. The International Horse Trials and other equestrian events attracts hundreds of local residents, of all ages, from Canterbury, Ashford and the surrounding areas as well as from counties further afield.

COMPETITOR TEAMSEach competitor arrives with a support team to assist the rider in their preparations for the competition. They are highly interested in equestrian sport and the associated lifestyle. At the higher level, the team may be supplemented by affluent horse owner and rider sponsors.
