Information for specialist dealers and therapists
Children’s rehabilitation catalogueDevices for the treatment of children
The right selection is the key!
Children develop their own personality very early in life. They explore the world every day. Children with a disability do this in special ways. They need mobility support tailored especially to their respective needs. Mobility that’s as autonomous as possible is crucial not only for the child’s physical develop-ment, but also so they can gain impressions of their entire environment and interact socially. The optimal selection of the right devices is a challenge for suppliers, fitting providers, therapists and parents. The products must meet the therapeutic requirements and should simultaneously create the best possible conditions for social interaction.
The shared goal of everyone involved is to give children the opportunity to communicate with others at eye level right from the beginning and actively explore and shape their environ-ment. Our devices help children and parents master everyday situations and take part in life together. They help facilitate the child’s activity and can alleviate malpositions.

Our guiding principles Promoting individual initiativeOur devices encourage the child’s activity and provide effective support in everyday life.
Creating opportunity for participation (inclusion)Our devices promote social integration and help the child actively explore their environment.
Meeting the needs of the individual childOur devices should adapt to the child, not the other way around. That’s why they feature a variety of adjustment possibilities to meet the individual needs of the child. Our custom fabrication workshop produces made-to-measure products for special require-ments.
Comfortable and pleasantOur devices are as comfortable as possible. When your child feels good and sits in a stable position, a lot of things become easier and more pleasant.
Supporting therapyOur devices are based on the therapy objectives. They promote these objectives, even during everyday activities.
Multiple benefitsOur devices are designed to help children – as well as their par-ents, attendants and therapists. This is why we involve them in the development of our products.
Made for livingOur devices are designed for everyday use. They are easy to use and (whenever possible) also easy to transport.
Why devices?Providing devices supports parents and therapists with:• Improving quality of life• Promoting autonomy and independence• Enhancing self-confidence• Increasing mobility• Facilitating movement• Supporting therapy• Correcting pathological posture and movements• Supporting optimally adjusted and stable positions• Facilitating activities of daily living • Promoting social integration (e.g. at play)• Reducing contractures• Relieving caregivers• Avoiding asymmetries • Reducing secondary orthopaedic problems • Controlling muscle tone

Sitting and scooting
Upright and involvedStraightening up to a sitting position is a major milestone in a child’s development. The spine now has to support the weight of the body for the first time, the muscles of the torso and all four limbs have to work in coordination. The child begins to actively interact with their environment. The hands are free and the child starts to grasp the world.
If a child is not able to achieve an upright position and sit, they need devices for support. This has a positive effect on the development of the musculoskeletal system.
There are so many different initial sitting positions: during therapy, in the buggy, in the car and later at nursery or school as well. Good positioning is incredibly important here. Reha-bilitation pushchairs and buggies as well as wheelchairs from Ottobock follow the same guiding principle: “As much inde-pendent activity as possible, as much support as necessary.” Our devices support the body, stabilise and straighten up the pelvis, but do not take over the work of the muscles. And they are comfortable and easy on the skin.
With the right support, the child can tackle the next develop-mental steps – actively and with self-confidence.

Setting the course for independence: special controls
Sharing activities, playing with each other and experiencing new things are incredibly important for children. This is how children explore their world – and they have many dreams regarding their freedom and independence. Power wheelchair controls that are adapted as closely as possible to the child’s needs contribute greatly to achieving this freedom.
These control devices can open up a whole new world for the child, for example by enabling access to the television, computer or telephone so they can
actively participate in everyday life. Other oppor-tunities include playing with peers or controlling a toy. Special and environmental controls for Ottobock wheelchairs give children greater freedom – with a positive therapeutic effect. Operating these devices also promotes the child’s hand-eye coordi-nation.

Walking
Exploring the worldBy the age of 18 months, children should be able to stand on their own two legs. Severely delayed or faulty development can seriously impair the later ability to walk – and therefore inclusion. Body weight must press the thigh bones into the hip sockets so that the hip joint can develop fully.
Children who do not learn to stand or walk independently can get ahead with devices from Ottobock and Prime Engineering. We have developed walking aids to meet the varying needs of these children, depending on their age and stage of develop-ment. These devices help children acquire and practice impor-tant gait functions.
This allows every child to step into life as autonomously as possible, taking part in everything as a unique individual.

Individual and unique
From options to custom fabricationNot all standard products can accommodate the individuality and uniqueness of children. In many cases, customised solutions are required, ranging from seat cushions to lying, sitting or standing aids.
We at Ottobock have therefore set up a dedicated workshop that deals only with individual requirements. This workshop can set up wheelchair control devices with special controls tailored especially to the abilities of severely disabled children, and even design custom installations.
Giving room to individuality and supporting the uniqueness of every child – that is our mission.

• Positioning and posture
Support and safety
Here’s how it works:A well-padded and close-fitting lap belt is the basic requirement for sitting upright, since it prevents the upper body from sliding into an incorrect posture depending on the pelvis position. Positioning belts can regulate muscle tension in the torso and limbs. A child that is positioned, held and supported by the device is far better able to coordinate their muscle strength, control their head position and use their arms and hands for fine motor activities. The material is important here. If it is too firm the child cannot move, if it is too soft the straps cut in. High-quality neoprene material (with special seams) provides the child with the required support.
Positioning belts provide crucial support for the body posture and functions – for example at the pelvis, upper body and feet. They complete the device and must not be confused with fixation straps or safety belts, which prevent the child from shifting out of position (for example in a buggy). The washable belts in different sizes are easy to install, compatible with various wheelchairs and CE certified.

Here’s how it worksAn expert team of designers, engineers, technicians and machinists individually examines what can be implemented by our Custom Fabrication department and how. They look for a tailor-made solution to every individual problem. We also consult experts from other disciplines when required, such as product specialists, therapists and fitting providers. We first attempt to solve the problem by modifying a proven standard product (in part for time and cost reasons). But if this will not work, we also develop an entirely new, unique solution that is tailored to the needs of the child down to the smallest details.
A wide variety of individual solutions
When “off-the-shelf” products or methods no longer help, we can: The aim of Ottobock Custom Fabrication is to provide solutions when more customised devices are desired or required. This can take the form of special cushions, custom control devices, leg support modifications and much more. For the child as the user, this achieves a plus in well-being and the greatest possible independence and individual freedom. We offer technicians and therapists tailor-made solutions for special issues.
• Brake and wheel lock The attendant can brake with two wheel lock handles while driving. The wheel lock can be locked when needed.
