Mozambique was a life changing ex-

perience, and we are hopeful this book will al-

low us to share a bit of it with you. Here we hope you en-

joy our journey through the Quirimbas National Park and begin to understand why we made a commitment to change the lives of children in

Northern Mozambique.Throughout the past year we have conducted many youth powered

fundraisers with the assistance of our peers at Qatar Academy and the

American School in Doha. These efforts allowed us to purchase and deliver school supplies, Korans, and two netbooks to keep us updated. However we want to do more and can with your help.

We would like to rebuild the girls Madrasa on Ibo Island where the roof has caved in from the heavy rains and the students must try to follow lessons on a weathered chalk board.Through a partnership with the Kamal Foundation in Washington, DC, the sale of this book and generous donations, we would like to see the temporary primary school in Enra rebuilt into a learning center equipped to serve the needs of the 1000+ students and the adult learning programs their parents would like to pursue.Our message is simple, anyone can be a proactive advocate for education and change someone’s life for the better. We hope our example spreads throughout the youth of Qatar and beyond.Sincerely,

In the early spring of 2010, Sara and Aisha, 11th graders at Qatar Academy, sat anxiously and excit-edly aboard their first flight to Africa. Within seven hours, the young women had left the modernity and comfort of Doha and begun a jour-ney into a world unlike anyplace they’d ever been.Landing in Pemba they boarded a small propeller plane that would take them into the Quirimbas National Park. Through each step of the journey, that involved riding in open back pick-up trucks, safari 4x4s and motorboats, the commu-nities eagerly awaited their arrival often with greetings of songs of safe travel and fresh coconut water.Aisha found new inspiration for her artwork in the local women’s use of traditional techniques, found ob-jects and recycled materials. They happily shared wordless lessons on weaving, sewing and herbal mask-

making which further cemented Aisha’s dedication to making her art and community “greener.”Sara, who previously exhibited an innate talent for respectfully captur-ing the engaging faces of children in Abu Hamour, continued to find unique moments that illustrated the beauty of the region; the pride of its residents; and the abject poverty present in daily life.Aisha and Sara interviewed a local government official who informed them that many of the children they had just played football with, pho-tographed and interviewed would not have the opportunity to pursue an education beyond 4th grade, if at all—Aisha and Sara decided they could try to change that reality.The following pages are a visual ad-venture as seen through their eyes and each book sale represents a tangible difference in the lives of the people captured within.

■ $8,000 is the yearly salary of a well trained teacher.

■ $320 creates a scholarship for a student to attend middle school.

■ $500 creates a scholarship for a student to attend secondary school.

The LocationQuirimbas National Park, Mozambique is roughly the size of Cyprus. About 55,000 people live in the Park, comprising a population that the Aga Khan Foundation refers to as the poorest Islamic community in the world. Most of the families live at or below the United Nations declared absolute poverty line of 1 USD per day.

The Men & WomenTwo local community leaders, Augusto Omar and Aida Safire volunteered to serve as guides for Sara and Aisha—periodically informing them of facts about the region such as the 38 year life expectancy and the disproportionate rate of illiteracy among the female residents. Senhor Omar is the hereditary Muslim leader of the Muani people and Donna Aida returned to her homeland after the 20 year civil war to work on behalf of her people. They were both the voice of the people and founders of the Park.

The SchoolsChildren from the interior wishing to study beyond 4th grade must relocate or travel long distances daily to attend school. Student teacher ratios in all grades can reach 80:1. The schools lack the most basic learning supplies suck as desks, chairs and books—it is not uncommon to see 3-4 students seated on makeshift benches sharing one text book.

المدارسداخل يعيشون الذين االوالد على يجب تعليمهم يكملوا ان يودون والذين المنتزه بعد الصف الرابع ان ينتقلوا الى مكان أخر او ان يمشوا مسافات طويلة للوصول الى ثمانين لكل واحد استاذ المدرسة.وهناك االساسية التعليم لوازم تنقص تلميذ.كما ومن والكتب. والكراسي كالطاوالت اربعة طالب الى ان ترى ثالثة الطبيعي يتشاطرون مؤقتة مقاعد على يجلسون

كتاب واحد.

The StudentsWithin the region there are only 10 schools which continue to grade eight and only two that continue on to grade ten. Despite the fact that boys and girls tend to drop out before completely primary education, the situation is particularly bad for girls, who go from being nearly half the pupils in grade one to less than a quarter by grade twelve.

التالميذيمكن تعداد داخل المنطقة فقط عشر الى وص��والً التعليم توفر م��دارس وصوالً فقط واثنتين الثامن الصف الى الصف العاشر.ورغم ان الفتيان الدراسة ترك الى يميلون والفتيات ان اال االبتدائي، التعليم اكمال قبل الوضع اسوء بكثير للفتيات اذ انهن يشكلن تقريباً نصف عدد الطالب في عددهن ينخفض فيما االول الصف

الى الربع في الصف الثاني عشر.

عندما زارتا جزيرة ايبو اعلمهما موظف دولة ان عدد كبير من االطفال الذين لعبوا معهما كرة القدم وصوروهما وقابلوهما لن الصف بعد تعليمهم يكملوا ان يستطيعوا الرابع هذا اذا استطعوا ان يتعلموا اصالً. لذلك قررت عائشة وسارة ان تغيرا الواقع.

سابقاً.

طيارة استقلتا بمبا، الى وصولهما بعد كيريمباس منتزه الى اوصلتهما صغيرة الوطني.وفي كل خطوة قامتا بها خالل هذه التي تضمنت شاحنات و سيارات الرحلة السكان ،كان الية وزوارق الدفع رباعية ينتظرون وصولهما بفارغ الصبر منشدين لهما اغاني الترحيب ومقدمبن لهما عصير

من العديد اطلقنا الفائت ال��ع��ام ف��ي وذلك التبرعات لجمع الشبابية الحمالت بمساعدة اقراننا في معهد قطر والمدرسة لنا سمحت وقد الدوحة. في االميريكية التعليم لوازم بشراء المبذولة الجهود هذه االساسية وتسليمها اضافة الى المصاحف ومحموالن لكي نبقى على ا ضطالع دائم على كل جديد. لكن نريد ان نحقق المزيد
