CHILDREN IN NEEDThe John & Marine van Vlissingen Foundation is a non-profit foundation and is established to help vulnerable children in need. The goal is support, through subsidies, institutions or porjects that focus on cultural, scientific, social, philosoph-ical, charitable and/or other general social causesor children in need of financial support because of their involvement in institutions and projects as described above. BCD is active in 109 countries. In all these countries, employees have the opportunity to select small local projects. The only requirement is that the project should support children. After the project has been approved by the Board, the employees first raise money themselves through various actions, varying from fashion shows to garage sales. After which the Foundation doubles the raised amount.

Bednet ensures that children and adolescents who are absent from school due to illness, surgery or pregnancy can continue attending lessons – from their home and with their own class. The decree on education in Belgium calls this synchronous internet education (SIE) - real-time distance learning. It is available for pre-school children from the age of 5 as well as primary and secondary school pupils in all certified state-subsidised schools in Flanders and Brussels. Equipment and counselling are free for schools and families for as long as they are needed.
“I HAVE HAD A DIFFICULT SCHOOL YEAR BECAUSE I COULD NOT ATTEND CLASSES FOR A LONG
TIME DUE TO MY ILLNESS. THANKS TO BEDNET I COULD KEEP UP WITH MY CLASSES AND WAS
ABLE TO TAKE MY EXAMS.”A child who uses Bednet
BEDNET
Bednet creates a live connection between sick children and their classmates, whereby pupils and teachers in class can see the absent child on a flat screen at the back of the classroom. The child at home can manoeuvre a camera, allowing them to attend lessons and/or talk to their peers. Bednet uses a straightforward system. Children actively participate in lessons, answer questions, can send and receive documents, and take
part in group work – just as if they were really sitting in the classroom.BCD Belgium has supported Bednet since 2014 by organizing various and creative fundraising activities ranging from a charity breakfast through world cup football games and office spa nail parlor to soup sales, a quiz and slot events. Everyone is invited to pitch in, and we have a lot of fun!

“WE REALLY FEEL SUPPORTED BY BEDNET AND HAVE MORE TIME NOW TO FOCUS ON OUR LITTLE GIRL’S MEDICAL CARE.” A mother of a child who uses Bednet
The donation of the John & Marine van Vlissingen Foundation provided Bednet the purchase of IT equipment (computer, screen, printer) and installation in the class and at the pupil’s home or hospital room. A technical helpdesk supports children and schools throughout the process.
Alongside the Flemish government, Bednet is supported by other structural partners and private sponsors, without which it would be impossible to guarantee that the IT equipment required by the ever-growing number of children and schools in need remains free of charge.

PROYECTO DANIEL
The inspiration for Proyecto Daniel is the dream of Daniel Arce Bobadilla, a young Costa Rican who, through his experience with cancer, decides to fight for adolescents diagnosed with this disease, so that they can face their process in a different way, through a differentiated treatment, according to their age, where they do not forget that they are young and do not abandon their dreams.
The motivation behind Proyecto Daniel is the adolescents who give life to our organization, they are all those young people who day after day have become the north and the engine that drives all efforts and actions that we carry out to honor the values and strengthen the mission and vision of our organization.

The contribution that John & Marine van Vlissingen Foundation provides to Proyecto Daniel is of utmost importance, since it allows us to consolidate our mission and make it sustainable, since it contributes to the well-being of the hemato-onco-logical population that we serve.
It also allows us to extend a chain of solidarity and love that this year celebrates 10 years of helping to smile and of generating hope; not only for the young patient, but also for their families.

BIRONGO MUSICAL SCHOOL
HIGHLIGHTS 2019
The Birongo Musical School is to create development opportunities in Sustainable Tourism for the youth, building a cultural centre of musical education for the 3,500 people that live in the community of Birongo.
The contribution for this project has been extremely challenging because of the Venezuelan inflation. Thanks to the support of the John & Marine van Vlissingen Foundation, we were able to buy a +300 m2 house, do the architectural design, and buy some of the materials to continue working on the construction of the school.
Currently, we are working to fix the facade with the help of the children and young people who will make use of this space, and then we hope to continue with the construction phases so this place can have roof, water and electricity soon.
The support of organizations such as the John & Marine van Vlissingen Foundation is very valuable. You mean hope and breath for us. We are building trust in places where very few people believe there is a future. The Foundation is giving us the chance to bring development opportunities for amazing people in some of the most special and beautiful but poor places in the world. We are proud to keep counting on the Foundation, so we can together build a better reality for the people in our communities.

Many of the students live in dangerous neighborhoods, where dealing with crime, despair, and apathy is a daily challenge. We work to reinforce these young adults; there is hope for them, their families and their collective futures.

HIGHLIGHTS 2019
Thanks to the Foundation, SRC invests in running gear and race entries for their students. The budget for one student from April to October is US$ 700 per student. Without this support these students would never have access to this type of experience. The encourage-ment and financial support are key in creating a lasting developmental experience for these students.
STUDENTS RUNCHICAGO
“I’ll admit that many Saturdays, scratch
that, every Saturday I have a hard time waking up. Some
days I don’t even feel like running. But what SRC has taught me is
that you will always have a community to back you
up.”
“I feel like at times, school gets
tough but now that I’ve run a marathon, I can go past what I think I can do. There are more miles ahead of me. There
is nothing that can stop me now. It’s that mentality
now.”
“I hope that as I continue with SRC,
I can be a cool mentor that makes an impact as someone’s life like SRC
did for me.“
“You learn to push through
barriers and self-doubt. I know I am capable of reaching other life goals that I never imagined
doing.”
