Screws: 2" and 3" exterior screws. We drilled pilot holes for all screws using a 11/64 inch countersink drill bit.

Wood selection: We suggest using redwood 2x4s for most of this build. Redwood is weather resistant and is a good material for an exterior structure such as a chicken coop.

Note: Please reference Bottom Coop Graph 1 for Steps 1-6.

4

STEP 1:

Either purchase or cut your wood to the lengths listed above and have the lengths separated out for ease of installation. All lengths are note with letters in the pictured instructions for your convenience.

STEP 2:

Beginning with the top part of the frame, attach a 2x4x57" (B) length to the inside of the flat end of a 2x4x60" (A) length using 3" screws, as shown in Graph 1. Repeat this step in order to create a square frame.

STEP 3:

For the lower frame, attach a 2x4x57" (B) length to the inside of the flat end of a 2x4x68" (E) length using 3" screws. Repeat to create a square frame with two 8 inch pieces with 45 degree hanging out of one end.

STEP 4:

Place the lower frame on the ground with the two 45 degree ends angled up. Using 2" screws, attach a 2x4x40" (C) length (with angled cuts angling up and towards the center) at a 90 degree angle to the outside of all four corners, where B and E intersect.

Then, attach a 2x4x29" (D) length to the inside of C using 2" screws, on top of the E lengths.

STEP 5:

Set your upper frame on the lip created by the D planks and attach using 2" screws.

STEP 6:

Attach the B cross brace to the two other 2x4x57" (B) lengths in the upper frame in the center, at 28.5", as shown in the graphic above using 3" screws.

6

STEP 7:

To create the diagonal wire support, attach a 2x2x29" (F) length from the right end of the lower frame to the left end of the upper frame with the flat side of the board using 3" screws.

STEP 8:

To create the gate, attach a 2x4x28¾" (H) length to a 2x4x59¼" (G) length at the 45 degree angle using 3" screws. Repeat in order to create a flat square.

STEP 9:

Using a staple gun, attach the 3 56x35" (K) lengths (1" hardware cloth) to the inside of the coop and the 26x53" (J) length to the gate. Check Graph 2 for a visual example.

Note: Our design uses Qty 2 2x4x68" lower frame pieces for the addition of wheels. Should you wish to build yours without wheels, make those cuts at 60" instead of 68".

STEP 10:

After you have assembled the coop, attach your optional wheels and wheel hardware. We used galvanized bolts and nuts along with lawn mower wheels. Feel free to modify the design how you see fit.

STEP 1::

Either purchase or cut your wood to the lengths listed above and have the lengths sepa-rated out for ease of installation. All lengths are numbers in the pictured instructions for your convenience.

Begin by cutting your flooring to 34" x 59 ½" (A). We used OSB particle board; however, you can also use plywood.

STEP 2::

Using either a circular saw, hand saw or jigsaw, cut the hole in your floor for the hen ramp. The hole should be a 14x14" square and offset the hole 8" from the front of the floor.

Save this 14x14 square as this will be the plug to keep chickens/roosters/baby chicks in or out of the hen house depending on your needs. Reference Graph 3 for a guide.

STEP 3::

To create your hen ramp plug, attach a 2x2x18" (R) to the top center of the 14x14" square (equal portion of the 2x2" will hang over to prevent it from falling below) using 1" nails or screws. (We used a finish nailer but standard nails or screws will work). Then attach the 2 2x2x7" (Q) pieces to the center in the opposite directions to form a cross, as shown in Graph 4.

Page 11: CHICKEN COOP - Build.com · 2015-09-17 · angle to the outside of all four corners, where B and E intersect. Then, attach a 2x4x29" (D) length to the inside of C using 2" screws,

12

STEP 4::

After your floor is cut, begin building the hen house frame. We used 2x2’s for the most of this part to cut weight.

To create the lower frame: using 3" screws, attach the two 2x2x30½" (M) lengths to the inside of the two 2x2x59" (J) lengths at a 90 degree angle to create a square, as shown in Graph 5.

Complete the frame by attaching two of the 2x2x32 3/8" (K) lengths to one end of the lower frame at a 90 degree angle using 3" screws, as shown in Graph 7.

Then attach two of the 2x2x27 ½" (L) lengths to the other end of the lower frame at a 90 degree an-gle using 3" screws, shown in Graph 6.

Finally attach the 2x2x60" (H) lengths from each of the 2x2x32 3/8" (K) to the 2x2x27 ½" (L) lengths, as shown in Graph 5.

STEP 5::

Laying the frame upside down on the ground with the lower frame in the air, center the OSB floor on top of the 2x2 frame. Attach the floor with 1" finish nails and flip back over.

STEP 6::

After your frame is attached to the floor, it’s time to work on the siding. We used a long straight edge and skil saw to cut our siding but you can also use a table saw.

Note: We used notched siding and overlapped the notched part off the edge of the floor to create a clean look from the outside. However, take care when using notched siding or your measurements may be off. If you choose to use alternate material you will need to adjust your measurements.

The 36x33 ½ inch and 31x33 ½ inch pieces are your front and back door frames.

Cut a 32 ¼" x 21 7/8" hole in the front (larger) panel for the front door as shown in Graph 12. You can discard this piece or save it for scrap wood. This is your front door frame.

Cut a 22x23 7/8" hole in the back (smaller) panel for the back door, as shown in Graph 13. This is your back door frame. Save this piece as it will be used for the back door.

STEP 7::

Using screws or a nail gun, attach the front door frame (as referenced in step 6) to the front of the frame (sides K on Graph 5). Attach one of the 36x31x60" (B) house siding lengths to the frame. (Leave one side open for the remaining steps.) Attach the back door frame to the back of the frame (sides L in Graph 5)

Before we finish assembly of the exterior hen house, we must build and attach the hen boxes. These are the areas where the hens will lay the eggs and where you will collect them from the back door.

Wood Choice: We used 1x4 cedar for the hen boxes. Cedar was chosen for it’s moisture resistant qualities.

STEP 1::

Assemble the bottom box by attaching the 1x4x18 1/8" (Y) divider narrow to the center flat of the1x4x30 ½" (X) front lip forming a “T" shape, as shown in Graph 8. Attach to the floor with the top of the “T" towards the front door, Bottom of the “T" touching the 2x2 support the goes across the bottom of the back door. The 2x2 at the back of the hen house serves as the egg catch for this box.

STEP 2::

Assemble the upper box supports. Attach a 12" 2x2 (S) to the inside of a 18 ¾ 2x2 (T) at a 90 degree using 3" screws to form an “L" shape. Repeat step. Attach to the frame by the back door using 3" screws. Being sure your 12" pieces are vertical, as shown in Graph 9.

This support now acts as a shelf for the top hen box.

STEP 3::

To assemble the top box: attach 1 - 1x4x33 ½" (V) to the front and one (V) to the back of the 18 ¾" x 33 ½" (U) plywood or OSB, as shown in Graph 8. Then, attach 1x4x17 3/8" (W) on the narrow side to the center of the two 1x4x33 ½ (V) on the OSB (U) to form your boxes.

STEP 4::

Attach the top box to the hen box support using screws or nails.

Your hen boxes are now complete.

18

STEP 1::

Start by attaching the final piece of siding to the hen house. Use the same method as before.

STEP 2::

Next we build the doors.

To assemble the front door. Attach one 2x4x21 ¾" (B) length to one 2x4x31 ¼" (C) length using 3" screws to create an “L". Repeat step. Now attach both “L" lengths to make a square, as shown in Graph 11.

STEP 3:

Next attach the 18"x29" (D) of hardware cloth for the front door window, as shown in Graph 11.

STEP 4::

To complete your back door assembly: Center and attach one 2x4x21 ¾" (A) length to each side of your 22x23 7/8" backdoor flush with the edge, as shown on Graph 10. We used 1" finishing nails.

STEP 5::

Now your front and back doors are done. You can attach them using hinge and latch hardware of your choice.

STEP 6::

As an extra feature, you can add a 33 ½" roost pole for the chickens to sit on. We made ours out of 1" poplar dowel. Feel free to experiment.

STEP 7::

The next feature is a ramp for the hens to go from the lower coop into the hen house, as shown on Graph 14..Cut a 13.5" x 52" piece of OSB or plywood and attach 8" slats to act as “steps“. We had left over 1x8" cedar from our planter box. We evenly spaced ours on the 13.5" x 52" ramp and attached using 1" finishing nails.

STEP 8: Attach hinges for the door and attach a 2x2x14 ½" (G) hinge support at one end of the ladder. This will offset the ramp so you can insert the door plug flush into the hole. And attach to the bottom of the hen house hole in the floor closest to the front door using 1" finishing nails.

19

STEP 9:

The final step for the hen house is to attach 65" x 37 ½" roofing material. Use short exterior screws to attach the roof onto the 2x2x60 (H) hen house top frame supports, as shown in Graph 5.

STEP 10:

Your hen house is now complete. Set it on top of the coop cage and move onto the planter box.

22

STEP 2:

Attach a 2x2x7 ¼" (C) length to each end of both 1x8x58 3/8" (A) lengths using 2" screws, as shown in Graph 15.

STEP 3:

Next attach the 1x8x22" pieces to the ends of the 1x8x58 3/8" on the end to form your box and your final depth remains 7¼", as shown in Graph 15.

STEP 4:

Next attach the horizontal 2x2x 21" to one end of your planter flush with the edge. Which will be our water drain assist.

STEP 5:

After you have completed the wood assembly, it’s time to add the bottom. We used corrugat-ed metal roofing material and cut it to 26x58 ½" using tin snips (shown in Graph 16). We then snipped a 2" slit on the long edge 2" from the short edge on all four corners to create reliefs for the 2x2 box supports.

Note: Take care to wear heavy gloves and eye protection while cutting sharp metal.

STEP 6:

Screw the metal to the inside of the box, starting on top of your horizontal 2x2x21" You should have an angled bottom that will assist in drainage.

STEP 7:

Once you have attached the metal, use a ½" drill bit to drill holes in the lower side of the planter box to allow the water to drain out.

STEP 8:

Set the planter box into the overall frame next to your hen house and you have a completed chicken coop with hen house and planter box. See Graph 17 for an example.

Finishing Touches:

For the final touches, feel free to paint your hen house like we did. You can also paint or use an exterior staining product for your planter box and hen house.

For our model we left our chicken coop natural red wood, we stained the cedar planter box, and painted the hen house red and white.

Remember that you can also decorate your hen house with hardware accessories and hanging plants as shown in our design.
