cial crises, and competitive threats areamong the obstacles CAS has weath-ered. Innovations in indexing, computer-assisted publishing, the creation of theCAS Chemical Registry and innovativeproduct development and internationalcooperation have been crucial elementsin CAS' survival and success. Morerecent developments, such as the OpenAccess movement and governmentalparticipation in the information industryare no less daunting than the challengesCAS has faced before. This presentationsurveys CAS’ history and sets out theprinciple trends and directions for chemi-cal information going forward.

The Speaker: Mr. Massie holds a jointJD/MBA degree from Columbia Univer-sity, where he was a Harlan FiskeStone scholar. He is an honors gradu-ate of Yale College. He joined the ACSstaff as head of Chemical Abstract Ser-vice (CAS) in 1992. He came to CASwith an extensive background in pub-lishing, having served as President andCEO of Gale Research Inc, a subsidiaryof the Thomson organization. He hasheld senior executive positions with theTorstar Corporation and was manage-ment consultant with McKinsey & Co. inNew York. He also practiced law withCovington & Burling in WashingtonD.C., where one of his areas of special-izations was Food and Drug Law.

He has served as Chair of the Colum-bus Chamber of Commerce and receivedthe Executive of the Year Award from theIndustry & Technology Council of CentralOhio. In 2003, he received the Patterson-Crane Award from the Columbus - Day-ton Sections in recognition of his achieve-ments as the leader of the Society’sabstracting services.

Abstract: There is a marked increaserecently in the number of organizationsand initiatives aimed at greater publicoutreach in science, both locally andnationally. How can the scientific com-munity take advantage of these in themost successful way? This talk will dis-cuss some of the local efforts at bring-ing science to the public and make rec-ommendations for scientists to tap intotheir inner Carl Sagan by learning howto translate Science to English forreaching lay audiences.

Speaker's Biography: Monica Metzleris the president and founder of the Illi-nois Science Council, a nonprofit orga-nization aimed at increasing publicawareness and appreciation of scienceand technology. By day, she is a vicepresident at Conlon Public Strategies, apublic affairs firm that helps organiza-tions navigate the political landscape toachieve their goals in the public arena.Monica earned her Juris Doctor fromDuke University School of Law, a Mas-ter of Arts in Public Policy from the San-ford Institute at Duke University, and aBachelor of Science from NorthwesternUniversity.

The Elementary Education Committeeof the Chicago Section ACS presentsthis column. They hope that it will reachyoung children and help increase theirscience literacy. Please cut it out andpass it on to your children, grandchil-dren, or elementary school teachers. Itis hoped that teachers will incorporatesome of the projects in this column intotheir lesson plans.

Flower Food

Kids, what’s up with those little cello-phane packets of powder that comewith cut flowers? They have three com-ponents:Food: Sugar is needed to continuedevelopment of a bud into a flower, andthe flower will perform better in terms ofsize, color and vase life.Hydrating agent: A wilted flower is onewhere the cells do not have their fullamount of water. The outside ring of thestem is made up of tiny tubes or ves-sels. This group of vessels transportswater from the roots (or vase) to theleaves and flowers. When a flowerdehydrates through harvest and ship-ping, the chemistry needs a jumpstart.Agents that lower the solution pHencourage hydration. This is normally amild acid such as citric acid.Antibacterial agent: The water in thevase can quickly become bacteriasoup. All it takes is a few stray pieces ofplant tissue and some latent bacteria.Bacteria in the water will form plugs inthe stem of the flower, blocking thewater from flowing through the stem ofthe flower. The preservative containsan antibacterial agent to stop this fromhappening.

Most packets contain 5 grams andmake one pint of solution. Averagevases hold at least one quart of water,however. Use too little solution andthere is not enough antibacterial agentand you may get cloudy, smelly water.The best remedy is to make your ownat home!

Tulips are a good flower to test plainwater versus a preservative (eithercommercial or homemade). Use thesame number of flowers per container,the same size container, and the samevolume of liquid. Use warm water (100-110°F or 38-40°C) because it will moveinto the stems better than cold water.Tap water is fine; in fact the chlorine intap water acts as a natural disinfectant.Have an adult partner handle thebleach in these recipes:

Recipe #1* 2 cups lemon-lime soda (e.g.,

Sprite™ or 7-Up™)* 1/2-teaspoon household chlorine

bleach* 2 cups warm water

Recipe #2* 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice* sugar* household chlorine bleach* 1-quart warm water

Recipe #3* 2 tablespoons white vinegar* 2 tablespoons sugar* 1/2-teaspoon household chlorine

bleach* 1-quart warm water

Which ingredient acts as the food, thehydrating acid, and the antibacterialagent in each recipe?

as our speaker for this evening Mr.Robert J. Massie, who most of us knowas Bob. He joined the ACS staff ashead of Chemical Abstract Service –CAS. He came to CAS with an exten-sive background in publishing, havingserved as President and CEO of GaleResearch Inc, a subsidiary of theThomson organization. He has alsoheld senior executive positions with theTorstar Corporation and was manage-ment consultant with McKinsey & Co. inNew York. While with Torstar, he man-aged 10 global subsidiaries and jointventures in Asia, Latin America andEurope. He also practiced law withCovington & Burling in WashingtonD.C., where one of his areas of special-izations was Food and Drug Law. Bob holds a joint JD/MBA degree from

Columbia University, where he was aHarlan Fiske Stone scholar. He is anhonors graduate of Yale College.When he came to CAS in 1992, CAS

was not the dynamic abstracting andpublishing giant that i t is today,although it has been doing a creditable

and successful job for ACS in this areasince its establishment in 1907. As theorganization observed its 100thanniversary in 2007, there was much tocelebrate. Although CAS has alwaysbeen among the leaders in abstractingand distributing information regardingchemical science and technology, thereis no doubt that during the past tenyears, it has opened new paths andblazed new frontiers in abstracting anddistributing such information. Much ofthis growth and pioneering advance-ment has been due to the leadershipthat Bob has given since assuming theleadership in Columbus. In addition to being an outstanding lead-

er for CAS and the American ChemicalSociety, Bob has also been a leader inthe Greater Columbus community. He isa member of several community boards,has served as Chair of the ColumbusChamber of Commerce and received theExecutive of the Year Award from theIndustry & Technology Council of CentralOhio. In 2003, he received the Patterson-Crane Award from the Columbus - Day-ton Sections in recognition of his achieve-ments as the leader of the Society’sabstracting services.We could write much more about Bob

and his professional achievements. Itwould be much better, and you would

get a more complete story if you getyour copy of C&EN, June 11, 2007 andread about the 100th Anniversary ofCAS, where Bob has given his ownaccount, along with stories of many oth-ers. THE SOCIETY OF COSMETICCHEMISTS: JANUARY 2008LECTURE ON SHAMPOOCHEMISTRYOut of curiosity, I attended the January

2008 meeting of the Midwest section ofthe Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC)in Westmont, IL. I highly recommendattending one of their meetings. It was avery lively occasion. My curiosity aboutSCC was piqued last fall at the ChicagoSection Chemistry Day at IIT when Iwatched participants make lotions. During the meeting, I had the chance to

talk with the invited speaker, EdwardDiAntonio of Amerchol Corporation (asubsidiary of The Dow Chemical Compa-ny). The lecture was titled, "Selecting theOptimum Silicone Particle Size/CationicPolymer Structure to Maximize ShampooConditioning Performance." I asked himhow he got interested in cosmetic chem-istry. It was purely by chance that heinterviewed at a fragrance company inaddition to other chemical companies.From the fragrance industry it was a natu-ral transition to the cosmetic chemistry.Mr. DiAntonio gave a very informative

lecture on how hair of different ethnic origin(European vs. Asian) is affected by differ-ences in a polymer’s charge, hydrophobic

character and molecular weight. I learnedthat hair is negatively charged. Shampooconsists of three components: polymer, sil-icone and surfactant. Cellulose polymercan be positively charged with trimethy-lamine groups that help it to stick to hair.Silicone particles are carried along with thepolymer and act as the conditioner thatkeeps hair healthy. Finally, the surfactant(the soap) cleans and creates micelle cavi-ties that help dissolve other active ingredi-ents. Hair from different ethnic groupsresponds very differently to shampoo for-mulations. I never realized that hair hasenergy. It is called zeta potential and is ameasure of how much negative charge ison hair fibers. One of the ways the condi-tioning effect of shampoos can be mea-sured is by measuring how much siliconethey can deposit. Small silicone particlesize deposits readily on European brownhair. Higher molecular weight and chargedpolymer deposits even better. By contrast,large silicone particles adhere better toAsian hair, and low molecular weight andpolymer content are favored. The end ofthe presentation left me even more inter-ested in hair, ethnicity and zeta potential. Ilook forward to more interesting lectures atfuture SCC meetings!
