Mission

History

CEF 2018-2019 Leadership

To encourage and empower young people to become the next generation of engineers through scholarship opportunities, outreach to educational institutions, and promoting interest in engineering as a career.

The Chicago Engineers’ Foundation (CEF) evolved from the Chicago Engineers’ Club, an organization established in 1903 as a professional, social and networking group for the Chicago engineering community. During its tenure, the Club established a foundation and presented its first student awards in 1969. The Chicago Engineers’ Club Foundation became the present-day Chicago Engineers’ Foundation of the Union League Club in 1975. CEF remains one of three nonprofit organizations with a home at the Union League Club of Chicago, and proudly celebrates 50 years of Incentive Awards to Chicago’s future engineers in 2019.

From the PresidentOn behalf of the CEF Scholars, thank you to everyone who gave their time, talents, and resources to enlighten students across Chicago to the value and excitement of engineering careers – and then supported $116,000 in Incentive Awards to help them achieve their career goals. Our volunteers, donors and friends make up an incredible community dedicated to providing K-12 STEM education, Incentive Awards, and career development to the future problem-solvers and innovators of Chicago.

In 1969 the Chicago Engineers’ Club Foundation presented its first $100 awards to ten Chicago high school students planning to study engineering in college. The awards became an annual activity and continued when the organization merged with the Union League Club of Chicago in 1975. Over the last five decades, the Chicago Engineers’ Foundation (CEF) has grown to inspire, encourage and empower Chicago’s next generation of engineers.

In June 2019 we honored the 50th anniversary of our Incentive Award program when we celebrated our class of 2019 scholars. A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of CEF’s inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award. CEF established this award to honor past award recipients for their professional achievements and dedication to future engineers. George A. Smith (Class of 1971) accepted this year’s honor. Mr. Smith received his CEF award as a Lindblom High School graduate. He attended Purdue University, pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. While at Purdue, George Smith was one of six students who founded a first-of-its-kind professional and mentoring society for minority engineering students, which is now known as the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

Mr. Smith is an incredible role model. A modest award encouraged him in 1971, and George Smith went on to establish an organization that grew to 16,000 members and over 500 Chapters worldwide. George Smith continues to visit K-12 classrooms as a CEF volunteer to inspire young minds and share all that engineering offers to our history, present and future. More CEF alumni are returning to CEF to volunteer and encourage future award recipients. It is a true honor to present CEF’s first Distinguished Alumni Award to George Smith, and to be a fellow award alum.

Incentive Awards are now presented to up to 100 Chicago high school and college students each year. In fact, over the last 50 years, the Chicago Engineers’ Foundation has presented awards to more than 2,000 students. Additionally, CEF has grown to offer both classroom and career development programming. These programs work together to ensure Chicago’s aspiring engineers are on track to succeed.

Your support this year provided Chicago’s next generation of engineers with:

• Merit-based awards to high school and college students totaling $116,000: Our Scholars are from neighborhoods across Chicago and 38% are first generation college students.

• 40 outreach visits to schools and organizations, impacting 1,000 K-12 students.

• Two career workshops which included resume and interview skill development, mentoring, corporate tours and networking opportunities.

• The CEF Resume Exchange, which connects scholars with companies seeking engineering interns.

Thank you to all of our Directors, Advisors, volunteers and donors for the impact you’ve had this year!

I particularly want to express our gratitude to the Union League Club of Chicago (ULCC). I am proud of our home within ULCC. With their generous support of the Chicago Engineers’ Foundation and other nonprofit initiatives, the Union League Club creates an indelible stamp on the community, preserving and enhancing its proud civic and philanthropic legacy in Chicago.

If you are learning about Chicago Engineers’ Foundation for the first time, please join us. Simply volunteer to share your own work experience with students, evaluate Incentive Award applications, or share the CEF Resume Exchange with your company to start getting involved.

Engineers innovate, build, and improve our world, and together we are inspiring, encouraging and empowering remarkably talented students who are the future of engineering. We look forward to celebrating many more milestone anniversaries and, more importantly, celebrating the outstanding achievements of our alumni for years to come.

With gratitude,

Erik Cempel, PE, PMPPresident & CEF Award Alum

CEF Scholars: In Their Own Words

Michael KadusFreshman, Purdue University

Engineers of the 21st Century are entrusted with the responsibility to combat some of the world’s most pressing issues. Engineers develop technology to make the world a safe and better place.

My contribution as an engineer addresses an issue that hits close to home-- I have developed a viable solution to mitigate the effects of drunk driving. My friend’s brother was killed by a drunk driver the night of his homecoming dance. Drunk driving is a real pandemic in the United States. Unfortunately, anyone in a car can be at risk.

I’ve formulated a cutting-edge solution to eliminate the possibility of drunk driving. My solution is the Soteria Driver Protection System (DPS), named after the Greek word for safety. DPS uses transdermal ethanol sensors placed on a steering wheel to detect a driver’s blood alcohol level. Within as little as 10 seconds Soteria would trigger the protection system and suspend vehicle operation. My system would be more effective, friendly and universal than relying solely on police officers to pull over intoxicated drivers.

This Fall I start my college career as an Electrical Engineering major and plan to focus on topics related to systems, RF signals, and data collection/usage. My participation with Chicago Engineers’ Foundation will help me experience the opportunity of uniting a strong undergraduate engineering program with my entrepreneurship strategies. This combination will help me advance my solution for making the world a safer place. My DPS is a safe, private, and efficient solution to our drunk driving pandemic and will become the new standardized safety feature in automobiles. Chicago Engineers’ Foundation will help make my engineering career goals a reality.

Alyssa SopanaratSenior, University of Michigan- Ann Arbor

The Chicago Engineers’ Foundation has provided me with more support than I ever imagined I would receive as a college student. I won my first CEF Award when I was a Senior at Whitney Young High School. Each year I’ve received CEF Incentive Awards, I have also gained valuable resources and support to help me though my education.

Last summer, I was offered an internship position through CEF’s first Resume Exchange. Newell Brands viewed my resume through the CEF Exchange and contacted me about interviewing for a software engineering internship. After going through my first professional interview process, I received and accepted an offer to spend last summer with the Newell software engineering team in Atlanta, GA. Not only did my first internship provide me with valuable skills, connections and experience, it gave me confidence in myself as an engineer.

This year I received another interview opportunity with a competitive Chicago company through the next CEF Resume Exchange. Although I decided to pursue another internship for this summer, I gained great experience with behavior and technical interviews, and meeting with engineers and executives thanks to CEF. My education and career decisions are often stressful, but CEF has provided me with support and many opportunities to grow and learn. As I start my Senior year and prepare to search for full-time jobs, I’m nervous but also ready. My readiness is due to years of hard work, and all I’ve gained from my participation with Chicago Engineers’ Foundation. I am prepared and have made incredible progress towards my career goals thanks to the opportunities I’ve received from Chicago Engineers’ Foundation.
