The big, colourful newspaper you are holding is the result of extensive research conducted by yours truly.

in the last six months i’ve driven thousands of miles, and asked hundreds of you what to put in a colleague publication.

the message was: more about the people please, especially those who work on the front line, delivering a first class service.

well, we’ve made a start in bringing you some of the personalities that make this business special.

there are lots of great things happening out there across

fcc every day that deserve to be seen by a bigger audience.

and that’s where you come in.

tell us about what colleagues are doing to make a difference: Call or Text: 07917 158871

Email: [email protected] we’ll do the rest.

Alyson davis editor

Welcome to your new-look chevron. We hope you enjoy reading stories of fellow colleagues – and

maybe learn a thing or two about Fcc Environment that you didn’t know.

2015 was a year of achievement with good performances in many areas. we hit our targets for landfill; energy from waste; compliance - which allows us to operate; and health and safety. thanks to the people on all our sites for your contributions.

this year we carry on transforming the business, managing the move away from landfill and building on recycling and energy recovery. we will be expanding

services to existing clients and continuing to build infrastructure – these are exciting times.

the greatmoor energy from waste plant in Buckinghamshire is in the commissioning phase and will hand over at easter, and around the same time we are due to move onto the next phase of the edinburgh and midlothian efw project. Both of these are key milestones for the business and we continue to enjoy full support from fcc who back our plans.

our long servers, the backbone of the business, will soon get the formal recognition they deserve. for those of you

marking your 25, 35 & 45-year milestones this year, i look forward to meeting you at the roadshows in april.

finally, turn to pages 4&5 to read about the great achievements of our December aBcD award winners. their stories are inspirational. Please keep nominating colleagues who you think deserve an award. i enjoy the chance to get out and meet the people who do the real work!

w ith his bandana, cut-off trousers and impressive beard russel newland, affectionately known as ‘pirate’ is

hard to miss when visiting the high Wycombe reuse shop.

But that’s all about to change in a big way!the larger than life relief manager is on a mission to lose more than a third of his body weight with a very public sponsored slim.

russel is taking part in a tV show, hosted by tV presenter Davina mccall, which follows people who make a pledge to change their life in the space of 12 months.

this time next year has already filmed russel at work, home, and out and about in high wycombe, along with a studio interview with Davina.

“when i went to london i was heavily dressed as a pirate,” said russel. “i had beads in my hair and beard, mid-calf shorts – and a hi-vis. Davina was gobsmacked!

“People think i’m trying to look like the Johnny Depp character in the Pirates of the caribbean films. But i’m not Jack sparrow, i’m a fat pigeon.”

for the rest of the year, russel aims to:• change his image to a sharper, smarter

look, like movie hero lee Van cleef• raise £3,000 for the south Bucks hospice

who run the reuse shop.he started by losing 3 stone in 10 weeks – when

the show’s organisers told him to slow down or the challenge wouldn’t last 12 months!

added russel: “i lost 10 stone in 15 weeks on the cambridge Diet back in 2009. i went from a big guy to a rake, so i know what’s needed.

“now i’m at slimming world. i attend ‘fat club’ and stick to the healthy meals they recommend. i’m a bread monster, so that has had to go. i get plenty of exercise at work, which helps.

“everyone is being so supportive. we have a board in the shop that shows how much weight i’ve lost each week. i have to keep a video diary of my progress and send in photos of how i’m getting on.

“i am totally focused on achieving the target weight. kids in the shop love that i’m the ‘Pirate’ but it’s time for a change, to look a lot smaller and get into some decent clothes.”

rob has transformed a poorly managed, inefficient landfill into a well-run team who are praised by customers and recorded a near perfect audit.

when rob took charge of sutton courtenay last June he inherited a site in a mess. Documents were out of date; training and inductions had been missed; colleagues had no team spirit and gas extraction was poor. to add to the problems relationships with the council, planners and residents were at a low.

But in less than five months the new operations manager had created a close-knit high-performing team, improving welfare on a site to be proud of.

a new supervisor has been appointed, training is back in place and colleagues are working to the latest guidelines, with an emphasis on safety.

customer complaints have near stopped – there has even been a thank-you message – with users praising colleagues for operating a well-managed, happy site.

the icing on the cake came with an ims audit scoring sutton courtenay at 99.6%

richArd’S STory“when richard volunteered i looked after him on site, showed him new things. i interacted with his carer and his mum. richard could be challenging because of his behavioural issues. i used to guide him, show him what was right and wrong; keep an eye on him. he was happy sorting the recycling, helping the public and cleaning the charity shed. we went for a trial at mildenhall, a smaller, quieter site where richard could be monitored from a distance so he didn’t feel like his care worker was there”

caring colleague dan pepper has been voted a site star after taking volunteers with learning difficulties under his wing.

he made time in his busy work schedule at Bury st edmunds to look after the new recruits, teach them the job and build special friendships.

Paula Juster, who nominated Dan for an aBcD award, said: “Dan has made it his business to give back to less fortunate people. he is selfless.

“when the first volunteer richard left Dan immediately suggested taking on a new volunteer with a learning disability and autism, Jake.

“at the very least we should congratulate him and recognise what he is doing.”

after collecting his People focus award a delighted Dan said: “no one has ever said ‘well done’ before. i have just been getting on with my job. it’s nice that someone has recognised what has been going on.”

JAkE’S STory“Jake is a fantastic fellow, one of the friendliest people i have ever come across. he used to visit with his parents; he was fascinated by the machinery. he is with us once a fortnight, helping with items of furniture, clothing and bric-a-brac for our charity partner. his carer is with him all day and we keep a close watch on him because he’s always on the go. now he’s one of us. i look forward to him coming in. he gives me a hug, he’s got such a lovely personality”

JAkE’S cArEr AnniE pAgE“Jake loves going to the site – he calls it ‘the dump’ – he spends all week talking about it. he and his friend ‘Dan the man’ have a really good relationship. Jake can be difficult at times because of his lack of communication skills but Dan takes time with him and shows patience. it is a huge thing for Jake. i wish we had done this years ago”

when faced with closing a landfill early, anthony and andy could have taken the easy option and capped the north hykeham site.

instead they came up with a solution with long-term sustainability.

their construction will protect the environment by:

removing the need for long-term groundwater pumping

raising the level of bunds to stop over running of leachate.

the work takes the site above groundwater levels

and prevents waste causing environmental damage changing the surface water scheme with a soak away rather than a long-term pumping system.

garry and the operations team at wrexham Pfi Phase ii mBt increased the efficiency of the plant to make it more profitable.

their improvements at our first mBt site included:

fine-tuning the mechanical Biological treatment (mBt) to allow more waste to be accepted, generating an extra £900,000

increasing the bio-drying performance of tunnels by between 45-60%

introducing health screening of bio aerosols and end toxins to ensure safe working levels. these will be built into future plants.

huge chunks of the yorkshire landscape have been created with limestone carved from Fcc quarries.

motorways, power stations, schools, shops, and factories: countless major construction projects in the north of england in the past 50 years are built on product from Darrington.

since 2007 five quarries stretching a length of the a1 from Doncaster up to tadcaster have been extracting around 1 million tonnes of mineral a year from the earth.

it’s a big, dirty, job that not many colleagues elsewhere in the business know exists.

But that’s all changing.general manager glyn guthrie, who has been at

the quarries since 1989, told chevron: “what we do here is different to the rest of fcc, but any feeling of ‘them and us’ is being eroded. our people feel very much a part of the bigger business.”

the main Darrington site is a hive of industry as a steady stream of giant tipper trucks roll in loaded with stone from the surrounding countryside that is dumped straight into the processing plant.

slabs of rock are smashed, segregated, washed

and blended ready for the building of new roads, houses and concrete production.

construction companies buy 90% of the stone, with garden centres to Diy fans sculpting rockeries at home also snapping up the high-quality limestone, along with by-products topsoil and compost.

some 50 colleagues work across the five sites, mainly involved in excavation by blasting or cutting into the rock face, and processing the stone. Darrington also has an in-house engineering department and fabrication workshop to keep equipment and vehicles in top condition.

strict environmental rules mean restoring quarries by landscaping, recycling soil and aggregate and returning land to agriculture, encouraging back wildlife.

said glyn: “we are a good team who use our expertise and hard work to keep sites running and profitable. we have a structured training programme with a keen focus on health and safety.”

experts estimate quarrying will continue in the area for another 15 years.

colleagues in west Devon earned rave reviews following another monumental effort to clear up after the tavistock goose fair.

they worked through the night, taking just four hours to remove more than five and a half tonnes of waste, including separating two tonnes of card for recycling.

the crew hit the streets after thousands of visitors left and stallholders packed away.

contract supervisor Dave Buckley said his crack team of 20 are experienced in

tackling the job. “we all pull together. a lot of them have been doing it for years so they know what they are facing and the time constraints.”

the streets were spick and span by 7am. “there’s a great sense of achievement and

pride when we see the difference,” said Dave.

and tavistock councillor lyn roberts added: “we were enormously impressed with how clean the town was after a very busy goose fair.”

she said: “our team is frequently required to show what competencies we hold in order to provide reassurance of our abilities. it’s great to know these qualifications are helping me and the business.”

colleagues in cumbria waded in to get their site up-and-running after devastating floods hit the region.

the deluge in December swamped the willowholme site in carlisle forcing its closure and causing serious damage.

customers were diverted to neighbouring sites as the team cleaned-up.regional Director stuart mander said: “some colleagues had their own homes

the energy from waste team in nottingham has been given the go-ahead to expand the successful eastcroft plant.

work starts soon to open up a third process line to turn household waste into heat for homes and businesses in the city.

after several unsuccessful attempts to grow the site, stretching back to the millennium, nottingham city council granted planning permission in January.

a delighted general manager Philip eyre said: “to finally get across the line is great news. this gives the facility a 25-year life, a 10-year extension on the current contract.”

eastcroft currently powers 4,500 homes – the largest district heating scheme in the uk – along with a shopping centre, university building and baths.

last year the 37 colleagues processed a record 180,000 tonnes of waste. the extra process line will boost capacity to 300,000 tonnes.

up to 12 extra jobs will be created at eastcroft once construction finishes in around four years.

we have partnered with health experts from the Best Doctors organisation and you can pick up tips from national charities.

we’ve all done our bit in making fcc a safer place to work in recent years by cutting accidents and increasing reporting rates for hazards and near misses.

after three years of hard-hitting safety campaigns everyone is more aware of keeping colleagues safe and well.

Driving home messages that you could Be next and report it every time elevated safety on the priority list for every site. two fatalities in 2012 reinforced that nothing should be left to chance.

“pre-2012 we were in a very dark place in terms of health and safety,” remembers paul stokes, head of sheQ. “But during the three year plan we have had formidable successes, such as reporting rates up 300-400%.

“now we want to celebrate what has been achieved, along with drawing up the next three year safety plan under the banner let’s keep it going.”

regional road shows, starting in march, are canvassing for grassroots ideas on how to operate a zero tolerance approach to risk.

site managers and safety managers are being asked pinpoint key safety issues they want to nail to eliminate accidents.

said paul: “we are taking a year out to communicate with the workforce, to come up with the employees’ three-year plan. that will take us to the end of 2019. if we improve further then in 2020 we should have a health and safety culture that is akin to 20/20 vision.”

Big-hearted ashley gordon has set 12 fundraising tasks in 12 months that will test his endurance levels to the limit.“i aim to do a mixture of physically demanding and emotionally humiliating challenges,” the credit manager based at Doncaster tells us.

the tasks suggested by colleagues include climbing the yorkshire three Peaks… and dressing in drag every friday for a month.

“i didn’t want to do just one thing, so the ’12 labours of gordules’ was born. i will announce each month what i’ll be doing.”

on a serious note, all money raised will go to cancer research uk and save the children.
