Geauga County’s cut ofOhio casino money will be usedto pay down $5.5 million of itsdebt. So far, the county has
banked $243,800, including itsfirst installment of $81,379.36on July 31 and an additional$162,426.64 on Oct. 31. More funds are expected to
be available Dec. 31.Until Geauga County Com-
missioners make an official deci-sion, county Administrator DavidLair anticipates the county’s ini-tial share of casino profits will beused to help pay off $1.5 millionowed on the county safety centerand about $4 million owed on adigital upgrade of the county’s800 megahertz police and fireradio system, he said last week.
Under state law, the moneyallocated to counties is a 33 per-cent tax on gross casino revenues, less the winnings paid. Each county receives an
amount from the casinos inCleveland, Toledo, Columbusand Cincinnati — which is toopen in the spring of 2013 —based on its population.Because the amount of quar-
terly disbursed casino money islikely to fluctuate, it will not beused to hire additional staff, make purchases or offset statecuts in tax money allocated tomunicipal and county govern-ments, Lair said.“They (state officials)
weren’t giving us very clear esti-mates on how much it is goingto be, so we don’t want to counton that for our operatingexpenses,” said Heidi Delaney,
the commissioners’ budgetadministrator. The casino money comes at
a time when Ohio’s LocalGovernment Fund has been cutfrom about $1 million in 2011 to$726,000 this year, and will con-tinue to diminish, Delaney said. But the casino money isn’t
enough to offset the decline inlocal government funds, Lairsaid.“Even if we had more local
government funds, we’d still be
using this to pay down on thedebt in either case becausethat’s more important in thelong run,” he added.Commissioner Mary Samide
agreed the initial casino moneyshould be used to pay downdebt, although she said the com-missioners may want to consid-er setting aside a portion of thegambling funds to help thecounty juvenile court deal withincreasing drug use amongadolecents.
Geauga County Juvenile andProbate Court Judge TimGrendell revealed the drugproblem and need for fundingduring a commissioners’ budget

Building on a positive expe-rience with its business internprogram initiated last summer,Geauga Growth Partnership isplanning bigger and better par-ticipation next summer. So far, Frank Samuel, GGP
director, said there are 16 spon-sor businesses or organizationswilling to hire Geauga County17- and 18-year-olds to learn theropes, and several more inter-ested.But GGP wants the teens to
learn about a lot more than justworking for some of the coun-ty’s premier employers. The learning starts with an
open house tonight for students,
parents, guidance counselorsand employers interested in theprocess. It is a process that has gelled
and matured since it was firstconceived by GGP membersmore than a year ago, Samuelsaid, adding traditionally, sum-mer work for students has beenhit-and-miss. It’s not often that a teen will
join an organization for threemonths where he or she is men-tored in a career-nurturing way. Flipping burgers, mowing
yards and babysitting are time-honored summer work for highschool students, but they do littleto prepare a teen for real workor to help the young adultunderstand the business world,Samuel said. The GGP program focuses
on matching up a business thatwants to nurture a student with a
student who has interests com-patible with that position in thatbusiness, he said. The matchmaking sounds
easier than it is.Finding students who want
meaningful summer positions isnot the challenge; findingenough organizations who havethe resources to create mean-ingful jobs takes a little moredetermination, Samuel said.“If this is going to work,
someone has to say ‘I’ll be thesupervisor of the intern,’” hesaid. “It’s an understoodrequirement that both sideshave to make a commitment.”Previous to this past sum-
mer, the program had nine busi-nesses and 14 teenage appli-
cants for the short-term jobs. Those numbers already havechanged for Summer 2013.“We have more student
interest this year and we have agood shot at getting 20 spon-sors,” Samuel said, adding theintern program accepts applica-tions from students who will be17 when they start to work. Some businesses won’t hire
anyone under 18 for variousreasons and that is only one ofthe variables that makes match-ing student to business a littletricky, he said.Personality compatibility,
skills, interests, career track andphysical ability to do the work

make a specific request foradditional funds, Lair said.“There has been no defini-

all factor in to a good match,Samuel said. The matchmaking process
last year was initiated in around-robin of interviewsbetween the organizationssearching for the right internand the students searching forthe right employer, he said. In a few hours of interviews
at Newbury Business Parkwhere GGP has its office,Samuel had the survey formsneeded to match employers andemployees. The process was set up by
Sam Fischbach, an attorney whoconsulted with the group andcreated the survey last year.“It was a nifty matching
process. It was very helpful tous,” Samuel said. “We decidedearly on that (interviews)should be part of the internexperience.”When they arrived at the
GGP office, the students wentfrom employer to employer and
filled out the survey rating theirperceptions.“We scheduled everybody as
fully as we could schedulethem,” Samuel said, borrowingoffices all around the complexfor the purpose.“It worked out well, it was a
good experience,” he said. Several months later, the
employers, who had made surethe students were well-men-tored through their tenure, reported good things.“At the end of summer,
everybody seemed very positiveabout the experience on bothsides,” Samuel said. Most of the students had
plans to attend college or earnan associates degree after highschool graduation, he said. The program does require
students to have a recommen-dation from one of their teach-ers and a minimum graderequirement. However, Samuel said not
all jobs require a high degree ofacademic achievement. Anaverage student may qualify for
an internship, he said. The opportunities are all
over the map, from sales to mar-keting to data entry to produc-tion to changing oil and tires.
So far, each of the followingbusinesses are hoping to findthe right intern for the summerof 2013: Arms Trucking,Company 119, BonitasInternational, Custom Mater-ials, Duramax Marine, EtnaProducts, Fairmount Minerals,Geauga Growth Partnership,Junction Auto, the law firm ofNeece, Malec, Siefert and Vitaz,Ohio Valley Group, SheogaHardwood Flooring, TroyChemical Industries, UnitedWay Services of Geauga Countyand Universal Disposal. The open house begins at

will be sent to the township’slegal counsel for approvalbefore execution, she said.Mr. Excavator should have
the work completed sometimenext summer, Caputo added. The trees have to come
down before March, when aprotected species of bat beginsnesting, according to a previousdiscussion about the cemeteryexpansion, Caputo said.“We should have enough
sellable lots for the next 40years,” she said, adding thatnumber is based on the town-ship’s history of burial data. The long, narrow 13-acre
parcel at 12701 ChillicotheRoad south of Whiting Lane isalready established as a ceme-tery, with about half of the areadedicated to gravesites. The township has two other
cemeteries — one on U.S. route322 and another calledWoodside — but neither isactive any more, Caputo said.
Trustee Ken Radtke said hewould look at the townshipcemetery policy and statestatutes to determine if naturalburials would be permitted inthe new section, a questionbrought up at an earlier meet-ing.In other business, trustees
said the Geauga CountyEngineer’s Office will evaluatethe topography of the MarilynDrive neighborhood to developa plan that might solve theongoing flooding problems.Earlier this year, trustees
bought a residential property onthe street to create a swalewhich floodwaters could flowdown when the area has toomuch rain or melting snow. Trustees might allow the fire
and police departments to dosome training in the existinghouse before it is taken downnext spring, Caputo said.By mid-winter, trustees
expect the engineer’s office tohave drawings of the swale sowork could commence nextyear, she said.Trustees also agreed to pay
part of $13,000 for repairs to acollapsed pipe at the town hallparking lot that caused floodingearlier in the fall. When it was discovered the
new parking lot was not drain-ing properly, the contractors forthe eco-friendly parking lotdetermined an old pipe wasclogged and would have to bereplaced, Caputo said. The asphalt over the pipe
will have to be torn out and thepipe and two basins replaced, she explained, adding workshould be finished this week.A flagpole will be erected at
the town hall and the parkinglot will be striped as well,Caputo said.

to come in, reviewing the bidsthat come in, referring the bidsto legal counsel and accepting abid, he said. After that, the contractor
will be able to provide trusteesand residents with a timeline forthe interior work, Ray saidSunday. “We agreed we would con-
tinue to make the communityroom available through Febr-uary,” he said, adding workcould begin in March.Trustees have spent the last
year working to achieve consen-sus on renovation plans for theinterior of the town hall andcommunity room into much-needed offices. They also had to reach
agreement on the addition of alobby and new communityroom on the southwest cornerof the current building.
A driveway north fromSherman Road and an expand-ed parking lot are planned forthe township property as well.Meanwhile, the trustees are
continuing to accumulate fundsfor the town hall project.Ray said trustees recently
heard from the Geauga CountyAuditor’s Office that the town-ship will be receiving $110,000in inheritance funds, whichtrustees will place in the generalfund. The township has been car-
rying a nice balance anticipatingthe construction and the wind-fall certainly won’t hurt theeffort, Ray said.“You never know what to
expect,” he said.In other business, Ray said
Trustee Irene McMullen report-ed Geauga County commission-ers Tracey Jemison and MarySamide have agreed to co-spon-sor a forum on oil and gas deepwell hydraulic fracturing in theUtica shale — an industry that
is growing in Ohio. They have agreed on two
possible dates in January andare now looking for a venuethat will accommodate a largecrowd, he said. “Our intention for the ses-
sion is to be educational andinformative, but not to be adebate,” Ray said. Trustees also discussed the
request from a Sherman Roadresident to have the speed limitreduced on the road. Since the intersection of
Sherman and Auburn roads hasbeen straightened and widened, she complained at a previousmeeting that drivers are passingher driveway at a high rate ofspeed and she has trouble get-ting out safely.Ray said he talked to Joe
Cattell with the Geauga CountyEngineer’s Office and was toldresults from a traffic study oftwo sections of Sherman Roaddetermined no change in thespeed limit is warranted.

New Family MemberAs the new general manager
of Danny Boy’s Restaurant, I’dlike to invite the community tostop in and introduce them-selves. Thank you for the great
response to the previously writ-ten guest column by MarcHabbouche. In my short time here, Marc
has taught me a ton about thepeople of Chester Township andthe restaurant. Although he willbe missed, we are hopeful in abright future of the restaurantand I’m confident in my experi-ence in the industry. In the upcoming months,
look for even more specials, added menu items, savings andpromotions. I look forward to meeting
and getting to know each andevery person.Danny Boy’s will continue
to serve the community in anyway possible and I’m excited tobecome a part of this family.
Jeff WisemanDanny Boy’s Restaurant
What’s ImportantFollowing the election, much
was said concerning the cam-paigns’ strategies and the cam-paign workers that turned thetide one way or the other.
Kudos went to the winningcampaigns and their workers. What seems to be missing in
these columns and letters is theimportant aspect of the candi-date’s ideas and philosophy. Isn’t this what we really vote
for or against? (Or should) Not whether or not we were
phoned or visited on our frontporch, or if his TV commercialsmade you think he was betteror worse than the other guy orhow many you were forced towatch and listen.
This is not to degrade thework and devotion that cam-paign workers should be proudof, but let’s give credit where it’sdue. If the candidate states clear-
ly what he’s for or against, ormakes one or more stupid state-ments, no number of phonecalls or personal visits willchange the voter’s mind. If his political party has as
its major philosophy ideas thatrun counter to societal stan-dards, he’ll be rejected as heshould be. If his opponentespouses things that sound rightto you, you’ll accept that candi-date. Now let’s talk about the bil-
lions of dollars spent on adver-tising that could have beenspent far more wisely to benefitthe nation, it’s students, teach-ers, police and firefighters, etc.

Don’t Sacrifice QualityWhen PaintingMany people only look at
the price when paying for some-thing and that determines if awise decision was made or not. When painting, it’s easy to
find inexpensive paint andbrushes to do the job. But, byspending a few dollars more, results will look more profes-sional. Turney’s offers Benjamin
Moore’s Regal Select and Ace’sClark & Kensington paint. TheRegal Select gives wonderfulresults that make a room lookoutstanding.Clark & Kensington also
gives a room a nice look and thecost is less. Both paints are easy to
apply and several differentsheens are available. Wooster brushes are made
in Ohio and are favored by pro-fessional painters. A good brushmakes a big difference. Also, Wooster Micro-fiber
rollers leave a “very smooth fin-ish,” as advertised.
Visit Turney’s Ace Hardware,12670 West Geauga Plaza, forall painting needs. Call 440-729-2130 for more information.
