It's easy. The board has 8 filesand 8 ranks. Files are the rowsof squares that go up and down. Each one is named by a smallletter. Ranks are rows that gosideways. Each one is namedby a number.Every square also has a name.

The first part is its file and thesecond part is its rank. In thisdiagram, a white pawn movedto e4 and a black pawn to e5.

When moves are written down, the first capital letter shows thepiece which moves. Q is queen.B is bishop. R is rook. N is usedfor knight because the king is K.If there is no capital letter, thatmeans a pawn moves.

Next is the square that thepiece moves to. Bc4 says that abishop moves to the square c4.When a piece is captured, an xis put before the square. Qxf7means a queen takes on f7.

If a pawn captures, the letterof the file it starts on is givenfirst, then an x followed by thesquare it takes on. exd5 says apawn on the e-file captures onthe square d5.

When two pieces of the samekind can go to the same spot, another letter is put after thepiece to show what file it camefrom. Rae1 tells us that a rookon the a-file moves to e1.

If the pieces that can move tothe same spot are on the samefile, then their rank number isadded. N6e4 means the knighton the 6th rank moves to e4.

Here are some special symbols:

6 Scholar’s Mate 112

This lesson is about a tacticthat minimizes material loss.

DEESSPEERAADOOSSKIRIL’S KLASS

The word ‘desperado’ means someone who is desperate. In the Old West, a desperado was an outlaw who woulddo anything to escape from people trying to catch him.

In chess, a desperado is a piece that is going to belost. But instead of losing it for nothing, you use it totake anything you can. Even apawn is better than nothing.

The white knight in diagram#1 is trapped in the corner andis about to be captured by theblack rook. This makes him adesperado. 1.Nxb6! gives upthe knight but leaves white withan extra pawn. (1...axb6 2.Rd1)

w________wáNdwdw4kd]à0wdwdp0w]ßw0wdndw0]Þdwdwdwdw]Ýwdwdwdwd]ÜdwGwdwdw]ÛP)wdw)P)]ÚdwdwdRIw]wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw

Scholar’s Mate 112 98 Scholar’s Mate 112

In example #2, White is aheadthe exchange, but is forked bythe black bishop at d5. There isno way to avoid the loss ofmaterial.

1.Rb1 Bxf3 is good for Blackand 1.Nd2? loses to 1...Re1+!2.Nf1 Bxb3 (not 2.Kh2? Rh1#).

But White can save the daywith a desperado. 1.Rxb6! getsa knight for the rook. After 1...axb6 (1...Bxf3? 2.Rb1!)2.Kg2, the position is equal. (2.Nd2? Re1+ 3.Nf1 Bf3!causes trouble for White.)

White has a similar problemin diagram #3. The knight andbishop are forked by the rook.

Defending by 1.Bd1 loses thebishop to the pin 1...Rc1.

No better is 1.Nd2, because1...Rd3! “reforks” the pieces.

So either the knight or thebishop will be lost. This is thesignal to look for a desperado!

1.Bxe6 Rxf3 and 1.Nxe5 Rxb3would each get White one pawn.

But the best line is 1.Nxg5+!fxg5 2.Bxe6, which gets twopawns for the knight. And twois even better than one!

With all of the pawns onone side of the board, and abishop and a pawn for therook, White should be able todraw easily.

In example #4, the whitequeen entered the black campto capture a rook on a8, butshe got trapped. So now shebecomes a desperado.

After 1.Qxf8+! Kxf8, Whitehas two rooks and two pawnsfor a queen, which is a largeadvantage.

If the white queen tries torun instead, she will have to give herself up for a minorpiece. 1.Qa7 Bb8! 2.Qa8 (2.Qa5 b6!) 2...Nc7 3.Qxb8[3.Qa5? b6!] 3...Rxb8 or 1.Qa5 b6! 2.Qa7 (2.Qa6 Nc7)2...Nc8 3.Qa6 Nc7.

Let’s look next at ways to winmaterial with desperados. Thetypical situation is when bothplayers have a piece underattack. Position #5 is a goodexample. Each side has a rookthreatened.

Nothing is gained by 1.Bxg8Nxg6, which is just a trade ofrooks. But White can first takesomething with their own rook before taking the blackrook. 1.Rxf6! gxf6 2.Bxg8. White is up a bishop.

Scholar’s Mate 112 1110 Scholar’s Mate 112

In diagram #6, both of thequeens are “hanging”, and theposition would be equal after1.Rxd6 Rxe4.

Since the white queen isabout to be taken, she turnsinto a desperado. 1.Qxe8! isthe winning shot. If 1...Rxe82.Rxd6, white is up a rook.

Be careful though. The blackqueen is also a desperado! 1...Qxd1!?

Now the game is even following 2.Rxd1 Rxe8. But waita second. It’s the white queen’s turn again! 2.Qxf8+! ischeck and that brings all the fun to an end. 2...Kxf83.Rxd1 and White is ahead a rook.

Our final diagram is a quizfor you. Both sides have apiece under attack again, theblack bishop on b5 and thewhite knight on e5.

Do you see how White canwin a pawn with a desperado? The answer is on page 47.

So long, partners!

Chess is officially recognized asa sport by the International OlympicCommittee. It has been since 1999.

However, chess has never been included in theOlympic Games because “it does not require physicalexertion”. Many chess players would disagree withthat claim, but they have not yet convinced the I.O.C.

The World Chess Federation holds an internationalteam championship every two years called the ChessOlympiad. Each country has a team of four players,or five if they have a reserve. In 2010, 141 nationstook part. Although the name is similar, this event isnot connected to the Olympic Games.

The next Olympiad will be held in Istanbul, Turkeythis August. The Canadian team is:

Bator Sambuev Montreal Leonid Gerzhoy TorontoNikolay Noritsyn Toronto Eric Hansen Calgary Edward Porper Edmonton

The acronym for the World Chess Federation is FIDE,which stands for Fédération Internationale des Échecs, theFrench name of the organization. It is pronounced “fee-day”.

HI BOYS AND GIRLS!In each diagram, switch two pieces so that the

black king stands in mate. Any two pieces can tradeplaces. Colours do not matter. You can switch whitewith white, black with black, or white with black. Youcan even switch a king. The resulting position mustbe legal. No fair putting pawns on the first rank or having both kings in check. Good luck!

CCHHEESSSSTTOOWWNNDDEERRBBYY

It was early Sunday morning and the sun was justrising bright above the hill. The shadows of the treesstretched their limbs to greet the new day. Everythingwas peaceful and still.

Well, almost everything. Kiril and his pal Dusty werealready out on the track getting ready for the big race. The Chesstown Derby was that afternoon, and theyneeded all the help they could get.

Dusty Daze was not the same horse that he used to be.It had been six years since his last race. And this wasKiril’s first time as a jockey. They were both a littlenervous.

Kiril tried to cheer his friend up, “C’mon, Dusty, let’s doa couple more laps. I think we’re getting better. I don’teven fall off anymore.” Dusty smiled, “Okay, Kiril, butlet’s try to go fast this time.”

Kiril did his best. And Dusty Daze ran his hardest. Butafter a couple hours of chasing carrots, they were notexactly breaking the speed limit. They did need a breakthough. So Kiril led the horse over by the water andasked him if he’d like to have a drink. “No thanks, Kiril.I’d rather have some fruit punch.”

So they walked over to the cantina, and ordered twomango chillers. And while they relaxed on the patio bythe lake, they had a game of chess.

WHO’SWHO’S THETHE GOOF?GOOF?1. White’s king cannot be on g1.2. Both kings are in check.3. White has 2 kings.4. There are unmoved pawns on e2 and g2, which means

the bishop that started on f1 never moved. The whitebishop on a6 must be a promoted d-pawn. But Black is only missing two pieces: a rook and a dark squarebishop. The rook was captured on b3 (a light square). That means that the white d-pawn could only promoteon d8 (a dark square) and could not become a lightsquare bishop, which would require another capture on c8 or e8. The black dark square bishop could not have been captured on either of those light squares.
