Swan Report 2018 The number of swans admitted at the centre, were on the increase in 2018 with 375, compared to the 340 in 2017. The juveniles greatly outnumbered the adults with 233 compared to 142. For the second year in a row the number of swans admitted from Cheshire increased, with the total figure coming to 90. Staffordshire was the second most common county with 65 admissions seen this year, and for the first time in quite a few years, the number of swans admitted from West Midlands has overtaken the number from Merseyside, with 45 over 41.

Due to the large increase in cygnets this year, we hard-released half of the swans to Spike Island, Widnes, which runs along the River Mersey, where there is a known flock. The remaining cygnets were soft- released in groups of 4 on privately owned lakes around Cheshire. Whilst at these sites they were support fed, and were able to leave whenever they wanted. Usually they stay for a couple of days and then take flight and find their own territories, but this year we have a few that have stuck around and are enjoying their safe homes and easy meals.
