Luckily, he is in the business, because with 30 years of experience, Shayne has proven himself a master of wine. Unsurprisingly, his preferred glass would be filled with a vino that can be traced back to its roots. His selections below should give you a taste of just that: terroir.

Nicolas Idiart Sauvignon Blanc$9.99 $8.99A lovely wine at any price, but at this price it’s a steal! Offers loads of aromas and flavors from vibrant citrus fruits to lemon and Sauvignon’s tell-tale grassy character. Quite refreshing and bright, but with good weight and ripeness.

Gueguen Chablis$17.99 $16.49Domaine Gueguen Chablis exhibits pale gold color and complex aromas and flavors of citrus, green apple, star-fruit and white flowers; richness and freshness are in perfect balance on the palate, and the finish is an incredible 30+ seconds.

Portland Wine ProjectPDX Pinot Noir$21.99 $19.99The search for an Oregon Pinot Noir lasted about six months before we came across the PDX 2014. Red fruits and spice dominate the aromas. Cassis, ripe cherry and strawberry intermingle with cinnamon and damp earth. There is nice ripeness and moderate tannins with plenty of fruit built into this medium-bodied Willamette Valley charmer!

Château Le Gay Bordeaux$10.99 $9.99Château Le Gay, AOP Bordeaux, is predominately Merlot and Cabernet in a medium-bodied frame and manages to offer a good dose of that “Bordeaux flavor,” a subtle earthiness that wraps around the plum and black fruit flavors, with very mild tannins and lovely acidity.

Campo Viejo Rioja Gran Reserva $19.99 $18.99Typically, Rioja has obvious and distinct barrel aging. Simple Rioja, or Joven, is aged less than one year. Crianza, or aged, is aged two years, one in wood and one in bottle. Reserva Rioja must be aged three years, with one year in wood. Gran Reserva Rioja cannot be sold until its fifth birthday, of which a minimum of two years are in wood and three in bottle. Look for cherry and raspberry fruit, licorice and spice in a mild, medium body.

Château La Prade 2012$18.99 $17.49Even if the Thienpont name is not familiar, I am certain their wines are! The Wine Advocate awards the 2012 vintage 87 points, describing the wine as, “dense ruby/purple color, loads of blueberries, raspberry and a distinctive chalky minerality, which no doubt comes from the limestone, clay soils of the Côtes de Francs.”
