Mothering Sunday

Mums are traditionally given flowers

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Although it's often called Mothers' Day it has

no connection with the American festival of that

name.

Traditionally, it was a day when children,

mainly daughters, who had gone to work as

domestic servants were given a day off to visit

their mother and family.

Today it is a day when children give presents,

flowers, and home-made cards to their mothers.

History of Mothering Sunday

Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in

England worship at their nearest parish or

'daughter church'.

Centuries ago it was considered important for

people to return to their home or 'mother'

church once a year. So each year in the middle

of Lent, everyone would visit their 'mother'

church - the main church or Cathedral of the

area.

Inevitably the return to the 'mother' church

became an occasion for family reunions when

children who were working away returned

home. (It was quite common in those days for

children to leave home for work once they were

ten years old.)

And most historians think that it was the return

to the 'Mother' church which led to the tradition

of children, particularly those working as

domestic servants, or as apprentices, being

given the day off to visit their mother and

family.

As they walked along the country lanes,

children would pick wild flowers or violets to

take to church or give to their mother as a small

gift.

A Foodie Festival

Mothering Sunday was also known as

Refreshment Sunday because the fasting rules

for Lent were relaxed that day.

Originally both Old and New Testament lessons

on mid-lent Sunday made a point of food.

The Gospel reading from the New Testament

told the story of how Jesus fed five thousand

people with only five small barley loaves and

two small fish.

Now there was much grass in the place;

so the men sat down, in number about

five thousand. Jesus then took the

loaves, and when he had given thanks,

he distributed them to those who were

seated; so also the fish, as much as they

Simnel cake

The food item specially associated with

Mothering Sunday is the Simnel cake.

A Simnel cake is a fruit cake with two layers of

almond paste, one on top and one in the

middle.

The cake is made with 11 balls of marzipan

icing on top representing the 11 disciples.

(Judas is not included.) Traditionally, sugar

violets would also be added.

Why Simnel?

The name Simnel probably comes from the

Latin word which means a fine wheat

flour usually used for baking a cake.

There's a legend that a man called Simon and

his wife Nell argued over whether the cake for

Mothering Sunday should be baked or boiled.

In the end they did both, so the cake was

named after both of them: SIM-NELL.

EVENT

NEW FROM THE

NEWBOROUGH INN

There recently have been a lot of

rumours being passed around the local area

that the Newborough Inn is about to close ?,

That Bryan and Anne Marie are leaving, that

the place is bankrupt.

I have been asked to go into print by

mine host to inform one and all that as far as

they are concerned there is not a single word

of truth in any of the rumours and if the

person who started said rumours would care

to present themselves at the Newborough Inn

would be told this to their face

The History Of StPatrickSaint Patrick was born in northern Roman Britain

around 387. The son of a wealthy tax collector, Patrick's

life was privileged in a comfortable Roman household.

When he was sixteen, Patrick was captured and brought

to Ireland as a slave. There he tended sheep and pigs on

Slemish Mountain for six years. During these harsh

days of slavery, Patrick prayed often and found a deep

Christian faith. His later writings in the Confession and

Letter to Coroticus describe his humility and an

enduring faith even in the face of isolation and scorn.

After six years, he escaped and sailed on a boat back to

his family in Britain. Freedom reinforced his Christian

faith and called by God, Patrick went to France where

he studied for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest

and within a few years, a bishop.

Patrick chose to return to Ireland. He came up

and landed at the River Slaney. His

first convert was Dichu, who gave Patrick a barn where

the first church was built at , County Down.

Patrick travelled throughout Ireland, converting

druidic pagans in , Tipperary, Mayo, Meath and

Dublin and baptising influential royal chieftains.

Patrick was a fearless and provocative missionary, he

deliberately defied Laoghaire, the High King in Tara,

introducing the Christian practice of lighting a Paschal

fire. Patrick banished the traditional pagan fire lighting

ceremony and many of Laoghaire's own tribe followed

Patrick's example. The king's son Conall converted to

Christianity, became a devoted follower of Patrick and

protected him as he journeyed around Ireland.

In 445, Patrick established the See of Armagh as the

centre of Christian learning in Ireland. A monastery

church and an archbishop's house were built here. This

was probably another challenging gesture to the druidic

order at . The ancient Ulster capital, this

had been the royal seat of the Kings of Ulster. By

building his most important church close to the symbol

of pagan royalty, Armagh became the most important

town in Ireland. The only clergy entitled to spread the

Christian faith were taught in the abbey in Armagh.

Saint Patrick died in 493. His remains are believed to

be buried in the grounds of ,

Downpatrick. A granite stone was laid to mark the

grave in 1900.

Well my dear readers lets start this

months column with that old saying what’s in

a name. Never more was that saying true when

my eyes scanned a poster stuck to the windows

of the Irish National Institute Ashton. It

stated, and I quote for your enjoyment the

Chunky Monkeys. Chunky what ? it conjured

up scenes of some obscure band playing one of

those familiar one line and two chord

concoctions enjoyed so much by younger

statesman and I thought I’ll give them a miss.

Well it just goes to show my instincts are not

always right when circumstances forced me to

attend the said establishment to pick up some

documents. The first thing I clocked as I

entered the main room was the lack of

amplifiers on stage except for the modest two.

Whoops I thought lacking a bit of gear for a

band maybe my instincts had failed due to old

age. So in my waiting period I thought I would

wet my whistle and give the said name a

chance, not long of a wait before it was time

for their first spot. Enter into the arena two

gentleman of fine stature and from the great

harmonies of the first song , this duo were

going to be bit a special. With renditions such

as You’ve got Your Troubles, Spooky, At the

Hop, plus a host more that covered a broad

range of the spectrum of music from the 50’s to

the present day. Wether as a duo or as a single

the rendition and quality were top class, it

really doesn’t get much better than this, a

superb act of the highest quality.

One of the quality acts that have

appeared on the circuit over the past year is a

young lady hailing by the name of January.

Although our paths have not crossed for some

period I was pleasantly surprised when I

dropped in at the Junction Inn Ashton to find

that this lady name was on the board as the

one providing the entertainment for the

evening. It seems that the Junction is not only

now looking resplendent inside and out since

Julie and Allen took over the reins, but is also

becoming one of the bastions of

entertainment on Ashton’s circuit. Grabbing a

pint of the wet stuff I made myself comfortable

ready to enjoy the nights entertainment. As

soon as January broke into her first song it was

obvious that this young voice had matured

with added power where even the highest

notes were effortless. Judging by the applause

from my fellow punters, I was not on my own

in whose attention had been grabbed by this

lady’s performance. Through a range of

renditions, mostly from our modern era

January kept an attentive audience superbly

entertained. If this young lady carries on

improving at the rate she is, and with that

element of luck, the sky’s the limit. So here’s

to you girl, thanks for a good night.

On a much sadder note I once again

have to report on the passing away of a valued

friend from the local pub scene our Betty. For

those of us who remember Colin and Colin of

the Gatefield, Burlington and Theatre Tavern

pubs of Ashton, One of the steadying fixtures

of every pub they owned was little Colin’s

Mum, Betty or As I knew her as one of the

privileged few Elizabeth. (Her Sunday name).

Ever present our Betty and one lady who would

stand no nonsense from any one. With a smile

or a stare that could turn you cold she would

soon put any offender in their place. But still

had the respect of many. Our Betty was one of

those people once met never forgotten a real

nice lady, Rest in peace my old friend

See you around folks
