InstallationNOTE: Reference numbers and letters in parenthesesin the text refer to the callouts in the figures and theparts drawing.

If you supply your own accessories, be sure they areadequately sized and pressure–rated to meet thesystem’s requirements.

The Typical Installation shown on page 5 is only aguide for selecting and installing system componentsand accessories. Contact your Graco distributor forassistance in designing a system to suit your particularneeds.

System Accessories

WARNINGTwo accessories are required in your system: ableed–type master air valve (J) and a fluid drainvalve (N). These accessories help reduce the riskof serious bodily injury including fluid injection, splashing in the eyes or on the skin, and injuryfrom moving parts if you are adjusting or repair-ing the pump.

The bleed–type master air valve relieves airtrapped between this valve and the pump afterthe air is shut off. Trapped air can cause thepump to cycle unexpectedly. Locate the valveclose to the pump.

The fluid drain valve assists in relieving fluidpressure in the displacement pump, hose, andgun. Triggering the gun to relieve pressure maynot be sufficient.

Refer to the Typical Installation drawing on page 5.

Air and Fluid Hoses

Be sure all air and fluid hoses are properly sized andpressure–rated for your system. Use only electronicallyconductive air and fluid hoses. Fluid hoses must havespring guards on both ends.

Mounting Accessories

Mount the pump (A) to suit the type of installationplanned. The pump dimensions and mounting holelayouts are shown on pages 32 and 33.

The Typical Installation on page 5 shows the pump(A) mounted on a pneumatic elevator cart (B). Thepump may also be mounted on a 19 liter (5 gal.) pailram. In either case, it is used with a wiper plate (C).Refer to separate manuals for the cart, ram, and wiperplate for further information.

Kits 223881 and 224829 are available to mount thepump on a 200 liter (55 gallon) ram. Refer to separatemanuals included with the kits for further information.

Air Line Accessories

Install the following accessories in the order shown inthe Typical Installation, using adapters as necessary:

A pump runaway valve (G) senses when thepump is running too fast and automatically shuts offthe air to the motor. A pump which runs too fast canbe seriously damaged. Install closest to the pumpair inlet.

An air line lubricator (H) provides automatic airmotor lubrication.

A bleed–type master air valve (J) is required inyour system to relieve air trapped between it andthe air motor when the valve is closed (see theWARNING at left). Be sure the bleed valve is easilyaccessible from the pump, and is located down-stream from the air regulator.

An air regulator (K) controls pump speed andoutlet pressure by adjusting the air pressure to thepump. Locate the regulator close to the pump, butupstream from the bleed–type master air valve.

An air line filter (L) removes harmful dirt andmoisture from the compressed air supply.

A second bleed–type air valve (M) isolates the airline accessories for servicing. Locate upstreamfrom all other air line accessories.

An air line quick disconnect coupler (F) isrequired for pumps mounted on the pneumaticelevator cart. The female coupler attaches to theend of the air hose (D), and the male couplerscrews into the air manifold (E). See the separatecart manual for further information.

InstallationFluid Line Accessories

Install the following accessories in the positions shownin the Typical Installation, using adapters as neces-sary:

A fluid drain valve (N) is required in your systemto relieve fluid pressure in the hose and gun, seeWARNING on page 6. Screw the drain valve intothe open branch of a tee mounted in the fluid line.Install the drain valve pointing down, but so thehandle points up when opened.

A fluid regulator (P) controls fluid pressure to thegun/valve, and dampens pressure surges.

A gun or valve (S) dispenses the fluid. The gunshown in the Typical Installation is a dispensing gunfor highly viscous fluids.

A gun swivel (T) allows freer gun movement.

Grounding

WARNINGFIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDBefore operating the pump, ground thesystem as explained below. Also readthe section FIRE AND EXPLOSIONHAZARD on page 4.

1. Pump: use a ground wire and clamp. See Fig. 1.Loosen the grounding lug locknut (W) and washer(X). Insert one end of a 1.5 mm (12 ga) minimumground wire (Y) into the slot in lug (Z) and tightenthe locknut securely. Connect the other end of thewire to a true earth ground. OperationPressure Relief Procedure

WARNINGSKIN INJECTION HAZARDThe system pressure must be manuallyrelieved to prevent the system fromstarting or dispensing accidentally. Fluid

under high pressure can be injected through theskin and cause serious injury. To reduce the risk ofan injury from injection, splashing fluid, or movingparts, follow the Pressure Relief Procedurewhenever you:

are instructed to relieve the pressure, stop spraying/dispensing, check or service any of the system equipment, or install or clean the spray tip/nozzle.

1. Engage the spray gun/dispensing valve safetylatch.

2. Shut off the air to the pump.

3. Close the bleed–type master air valve (required inyour system).

4. Disengage the gun/valve safety latch.

5. Hold a metal part of the gun/valve firmly to the sideof a grounded metal pail, and trigger the gun/valveto relieve pressure.

6. Engage the gun/valve safety latch.

7. Open the drain valve (required in your system)and/or the pump bleeder valve, having a containerready to catch the drainage.

8. Leave the drain valve open until you are ready tospray/dispense again.

If you suspect that the spray tip/nozzle or hose iscompletely clogged, or that pressure has not been fullyrelieved after following the steps above, VERYSLOWLY loosen the tip guard retaining nut or hoseend coupling and relieve pressure gradually, thenloosen completely. Now clear the tip or hose.

Packing Nut/Wet–Cup

WARNINGTo reduce the risk of serious injury whenever youare instructed to relieve pressure, always follow thePressure Relief Procedure at left.

1. Fill the packing nut/wet–cup (2) 1/3 full with GracoThroat Seal Liquid (TSL) or compatible solvent.See Fig. 2.

2. Adjust the packing nut weekly so it is just snug; donot overtighten.

OperationFlush the Pump Before First Use

The pump is tested with lightweight oil, which is left into protect the pump parts. If the fluid you are usingmay be contaminated by the oil, flush it out with acompatible solvent before using the pump.

Starting and Adjusting the Pump

WARNINGMoving Parts Hazard

Moving parts can pinch or amputate your fingers or other body parts. When the pump is operating, the priming piston (23)(located at the pump intake) and the air . . . . . . . . motor piston (located behind the air motorplates) move. See Fig. 2. Therefore,

NEVER operate the pump with the air motorplates removed, and keep your fingers and handsaway from the priming piston.

Before attempting to clear an obstruction from thepriming piston (23) or service the pump, follow thePressure Relief Procedure to prevent the pumpfrom starting accidentally.

See the TYPICAL INSTALLATION on page 5. If youare using a pneumatic elevator cart or 19 liter (5gallon) ram with the pump, refer to the separate in-structions for those components for set–up and opera-tion instructions.

1. Lower the pump into a fluid container. Be sure theair regulator (K) and bleed–type master air valve(J) are closed.

2. Open the bleed valve (J). Hold a metal part of thespray gun/dispensing valve (S) firmly to the side ofa grounded metal pail and hold the trigger open.

3. Slowly open the air regulator until the pump starts.

4. Cycle the pump slowly until all the air is pushedout and the pump and hoses are fully primed.

5. Release the spray gun/dispensing valve triggerand engage the safety latch. The pump shouldstall against pressure when the trigger is released.

6. If the pump fails to prime properly, open thebleeder valve (33) slightly. See Fig 6. Use thebleeder hole (on the underside of the valve hous-ing) as a priming valve until the fluid appears at thehole.

7. Close the bleeder valve.

NOTE: When changing fluid containers with the hoseand gun already primed, be sure to open the bleedervalve (33), to assist in priming the pump and ventingair before it enters the hose. Close the bleeder valvewhen all air has been eliminated.

WARNINGTo reduce the risk of fluid injection, DO NOT useyour hand or fingers to cover the bleeder holewhen priming the pump.

8. With the pump and lines primed, and with ade-quate air pressure and volume supplied, the pumpwill start and stop as the spray gun/dispensingvalve is opened and closed.

9. Use the air regulator (K) to control the pump speedand the fluid pressure. Always use the lowest airpressure necessary to get the desired results.Higher pressures cause premature tip/nozzle andpump wear.

WARNINGCOMPONENT RUPTURE HAZARDTo reduce the risk of overpressurizingyour system, which could cause compo-nent rupture and serious injury, never

exceed the Maximum Incoming Air Pressure to thepump (see the Technical Data on page 26).

CAUTIONDo not allow the pump to run dry. It will quicklyaccelerate to a high speed, causing damage. If yourpump is running too fast, stop it immediately andcheck the fluid supply. If the container is empty andair has been pumped into the lines, refill the con-tainer and prime the pump and the lines, or flush andleave it filled with a compatible solvent. Eliminate allair from the fluid system.

NOTE: A pump runaway valve (G), which shuts off theair supply to the pump if the pump accelerates beyondthe pre–set speed, is available. See the Typical Instal-lation on page 5.

Refer to Fig 7 for reassembly.

1. Place an 8 mm (5/16 in.) dia. brass rod lengthwisein a vise. Install a new piston seal (14*) on thepiston seat (15). Apply thread sealant to thethreads of the piston guide (12). Place the pistonguide (12) securely on the brass rod. Using a 22mm crow’s–foot, screw the piston seat (15) intothe piston guide. Torque to 23–25Nm (17–19ft–lb).

2. If it was necessary to remove the priming pistonrod (21) from the piston (13), apply thread sealantto the female threads of the piston. Place the flatsof the piston (13) in a vise. Hold the flats of the rodwith an 8 mm wrench, and screw the rod into thepiston. Torque to 35–41 N.m (26–30 ft–lb). Becareful not to create burrs on the flats of the rod.

3. Use a vise with soft jaws to hold the displacementrod (1) by its flats. Install the assembled pistonguide/seat on the piston (13). Apply thread sealantto the female threads of the piston, and screw thepiston assembly onto the rod, using a 15 mmwrench on the flats of the piston. Torque to 35–41N.m (26–30 ft–lb). There will be a small gap be-tween the top of the piston (13) and the shoulderof the rod (1).

4. Lubricate the threads of the bleeder valve plug(34). The plug has two sets of threads. Whenreassembling, be sure to screw the plug fully intothe valve housing (33) Torque to 31–37 N.m(23–27 ft–lb) .

NOTE: It is not ordinarily necessary to remove theoutlet nipple (7) and o–ring (8*). However, if they werereplaced because of damage, lubricate the o–ring (8*)and place it on the nipple (7). Screw the nipple into theoutlet housing (9). Torque to 60–84 N.m (44–62 ft–lb).

5. Lubricate the o–rings (10*) and install them on thecylinder (11). Apply thread lubricant to the topthreads of the cylinder. Using a 24 in. adjustablewrench on the flats of the cylinder, screw it into theoutlet housing (9). Torque to 159–221 N.m(117–163 ft–lb).

6. Lubricate the throat packings and glands, andinstall them in the outlet housing (9) one at a timein the following order, with the lips of the v–packings facing down: male gland (6**),UHMWPE v–packing (5**), PTFE v–packing (3**),UHMWPE (5**), PTFE (3**), UHMWPE (5**), andfemale gland (4**). Apply thread lubricant to thepacking nut (2) and install the packing nut looselyin the outlet housing.

7. Carefully insert the displacement rod (1) into thebottom of the cylinder (11). Push the rod up intothe cylinder and through the outlet housing (9),until it protrudes from the packing nut (2). Becareful not to damage the piston seal (14*) whileperforming this step.

8. Apply thread lubricant to the bottom threads of thecylinder (11). Be sure the o–ring (10*) is in placeon the cylinder. Guide the intake valve housing(16) up onto the priming piston rod (21). Screw thevalve housing onto the cylinder, using a 24 in.adjustable wrench. Torque to 159–221 N.m(117–163 ft–lb).
