• Why does the venus fly trap need to catch flies?
• Using what you know, can you invent a plant that would survive on Mars?
Design a plant project
Your task today is to design a plant that is adapted to the world it lives in. You will be given a location (biome) and a set number of requirements that your plant must meet in order to survive.
Your plant should be able to protect itself from predators and disease, get adequate sunlight, adjust to temperature extremes, gather nutrients, and obtain water.
Things that plants need to adapt to
• Predators• Amount of Sunlight• Amount of Nutrients• Range of Temperature• Amount of Rainfall
• Pick a row from the next slide. That row has all of your plant’s requirements.
• Choose one of the 2 biomes in the row. No two groups can have the same combination.
• Each student will work in groups of 3 to create their own plant that must have adaptations for its biome.

Research Cards
• Each student will be responsible to one color on the research cards. Make sure you and your partners are finishing their cards, because their work affects YOUR grade.
Biome Research CardBiome selected __________
1.How many hours of sunlight are in a day?
2.Describe the Soil in your biome. Is it filled with nutrients? Yes… What kind? No…what is missing? Is it hard packed or loose soil? Etc :
3. What is the weather like? How hot or cold does it get? Is it the same year round or does it change with the seasons?
4. How much rain does your biome receive per year?:
5. List Animals found in this biome:
6. Give 2 or 3 examples of how real like plants in this biome are adapted to survive the weather
Plant Research Card1.List all possible purposes of the stems
Explain ways stems of current plants have adapted to their environment (2-3 ex)
2. List all possible purposes of the leaves
Explain ways leaves of current plants have adapted to their environment (2-3 ex)
3. List all possible purposes of the Roots
Explain ways roots of current plants have adapted to their environment (2-3 ex)
Systems Research Card1.List all possible purposes of the response system in plants
Explain how cells work together to make the plant respond to its environment(2-3 steps)
2. List all possible purposes of the transport system in plants
Explain how cells work together to make get nutrients to all parts of the plant (2-3 steps)
3. What organisms in your biome help your plant to reproduce?
Explain how cells work together to help the plant reproduce (2-3 steps)

Pre-AP Extension/Regular Extra Credit10 Extra points
(Choose one of the following)
• Create an acrostic for a plant from your biome. It should include information about the biome and the producers.
• Create a collage of pictures and words that represent your ecosystem. Include a sentence for each item that explains how it is related to your biome.
• Create a set of trading cards for your ecosystem that includes examples of plants and soil types found in your ecosystem (10 cards minimum).
• Create Three Facts and a Fib about your biome.• Design a folded quiz that asks questions about the
interdependence and symbiotic relationships found in your biome (5 questions minimum).
